Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

Coastal areas look bad.
I'm just off out to pick up the contents of our bin that got scattered far and wide last night. Then I'm securing everything down for Eunice!

Panicmode1 · 17/02/2022 09:53

I'm due to drive from the SW to Kent tomorrow...was going to leave early am, but hoping if I leave closer to lunchtime, the really high winds will be ahead of me....or is this really stupid? Hate travelling via the A303 on Saturdays or Sundays so really want to avoid if possible!!

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 09:53

Winds here of 85 predicted just at morning school run time - seems crazy to risk that, what does anyone think ?

Hasselhoffsheadband · 17/02/2022 09:54

Yep, wind speeds have gone back up into the 70s in BBC now for my area as well.

When was the last time there were winds this bad in the South of England?

BaconMassive · 17/02/2022 09:56

Anything that impacts the south will be reported way more than the equivalent up north.

Thewiseoneincognito · 17/02/2022 09:56

Don’t risk school runs in bad wind storms. Really not worth it.

crackofdoom · 17/02/2022 09:56

sirvix I guess we can wait to call it until tomorrow morning, see what it's actually doing. Will have to find out how we get informed if the school bus gets cancelled.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 17/02/2022 09:59

Anyone know if south Staffordshire Gona get hit bad? I'm genuinely concerned about letting the cat out for the toilet tomorrow 😆

BaconMassive · 17/02/2022 10:01

I mean the storm Dudley thread 147 messages, Storm Eunice 230+ messages already.

Even mumsnet has a southern media bias.

PainterInPeril · 17/02/2022 10:02

Ok, my anxiety is going into overdrive now! I keep hoping that everyone has it wrong and that actually tomorrow will be just a bit breezy!Blush Is South Devon going to be badly hit?

Looks like it, especially if you're on the coast. Hunker down.
Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 10:07

I’m not risking school and nursery hours walk in potentially 85mph winds tomorrow, the risks outweigh the benefits IMO. So many neighbours people have tools out/garden furniture/plant pots etc - really hoping they heed the warnings and shift them inside or secure them down!

SmallChange11 · 17/02/2022 10:12

I'm really anxious about tomorrow, dh and I both have to be out at work all day and dc will be home alone (17 and 13) as it's half term here.

Plus we're in the middle of garden renovations currently, we're going to secure what we can but have limited storage space to move things inside. I'm worried damage will happen when the dc are home alone but I'm an essential worker so can't take any time off to be with them. Can someone talk me down a bit please 🙏

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 10:15

We had a huge build up to Dudley last night here in central Scotland- and winds are something we're well used to. In reality though it wasn't the huge sustained storm that we were expecting but pockets of gusts which is far less damaging. Always hard to predict til it happens

colouringindoors · 17/02/2022 10:26

Oh bumholes. BBC is predicting up to 73mph gusts in my part of Cornwall tomorrow- at 8.00- 9.00am. DS1 takes the coach through narrow, tree lined lanes to school in one direction, and I drive DS2 to school through narrow, tree lined lanes in the other

stay at home. It's simply not worth the risk.

Even mumsnet has a southern media bias.

It's simply a reflection of how the population of the country is distributed,

London and the SE account for about 1/3 of the population.

EllaB22 · 17/02/2022 10:31

I don't think school runs are worth the risk esp when you can hopefully log in remotely (electric pending)!

Am I right in thinking there is not as grave a risk to Northern Ireland tomorrow? I have an appointment a 45 minute drive away and trying to decide if I should rearrange.

Thank you for all the updates!

PainterInPeril · 17/02/2022 10:34

@Maireas 😱 We're doomed!

Maireas · 17/02/2022 10:35

It's going to be my excuse for having a messy garden!
" It was Storm Eunice!"

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2022 10:45

@Wagsandclaws

I'm seeing talk of a sting jet on netweather ( the hook feature that *@OhYouBadBadKitten* is talking about? ).

Just waiting for met office update now. NOT travelling tomorrow on our 15 mile each way school run now. Dc can sign into teams and do it that way ( if the electric lasts!) .

The hook I mentioned is part of the storm curling back round on itself. Very different from a sting jet which is where air rapidly descends through a storm from aloft, accelerating as it does so. It is thought that a sting jet was responsible for the extreme damage through parts of East Anglia in 1987.

Note I'm not calling this storm a 1987 event! But I am watching the prospect of a sting jet very closely now. They tend to form a corridor of around 30 miles or so wide of severe straight line winds, before dissipating.

Those watching weather forums will be seeing virtual fisticuffs breaking out between the its downgrading and its upgrading people. In terms of models, both are currently correct. I don't know which model will be accurate. I hope the downgraded models are for the sake of safety and less damage.
@GloriaSmud if you're doing individual requests Grin can I ask for one for Crewe?
and yes, people of Cheshire, I know it's a shit-hole, but it wasn't my choice
Try Macclesfield 😂😂😂
Crewe ain't that bad

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 17/02/2022 10:50

DD has a riding lesson tomorrow at 11 (north London). I just asked if they would be cancelling, or what would lead them to cancel, and they said lessons go ahead in all weathers. I am all for that in other types of weather, but I think they are being a bit naive about tomorrow? If I don't think it's safe to drive there we won't be going.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 17/02/2022 10:52

Red warning for some of the SW now

LadyFlumpalot · 17/02/2022 10:52

Red warning just appeared.

We’ve got to drive from Surrey into central London for an IVF scan appt at 9am. It’s time critical so we’ll have to brave it and hope no projectiles. Should be home just as wind speed peaks. Need to clear loose bits/possible projectiles from the garden at lunchtime today.
