Usual disclaimer - Gloria and I are amateurs, fitting this in round our home and work lives. We do our best, we sometimes get things wrong! Please don't make important decisions based on what we say, always refer to the met office website first.

FLOWCHART!!! That's a bloody amazing idea OYBBK - Weather and anxiety a you may well be my favourite person right now!
More thanks and FlowersFlowersFlowersFlowers to you!

SlightlyTired · 28/02/2018 20:52

This is such a brilliant thread, thank you to the tireless OYBBK and gloria.
What do people think about getting between Cheltenham and Bristol tomorrow? Train or drive? I think train, DH wants to drive. (He has to go for work - he has the sort of job that means he absolutely has to try every trick in the book to get there and on time.) We have a 4WD but I think the motorway could be dangerous.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 28/02/2018 20:54

Met office and BBC not at all in agreement. I’m going with the Met Office although the BBC’s weather is what I would prefer.

BachAtTheMoon · 28/02/2018 20:55

I have had a look at some of the sites mentioned and am a bit lost now! So much conflicting information! Do you think there will be ant chance of snow in North Devon?

educatingarti · 28/02/2018 20:56

LOL notsomanky !
I need to be out and about later on tomorrow morning so happy for the snow shield to be operational till then. It can snow as much as it likes after that and on Friday!

Rhodiolia · 28/02/2018 20:58

Im a coastal town on the east coast of Scotland, what more can we expect here? we've had only light snow so far.

summersgoneaway · 28/02/2018 21:00

Snow coming down here is settling

BestIsWest · 28/02/2018 21:01

We had a dusting at 6 but nothing since. It’s windier though. Most schools closing in all the surrounding counties. Not ours though.

LadyFlumpalot · 28/02/2018 21:01

It's just started pitching in Dorset. Our forecast for tomorrow is wall to wall heavy snow with 90% probability.

If I may answer the question upthread about the difference in the warnings and the forecast on the app? I asked the same question to my dad who, as an ex (retired) managing director of the met office is very well placed to answer.

Basically, the forecasts are done by computers and the warnings are done by people. The people look at the data produced and refine it.

I was up in Leeds yesterday and literally ran away back south west just ahead of the snow.

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 28/02/2018 21:05

Finding this all fascinating and have been glued to these threads all week. Thanks oybbk and Gloria. Keeping a keen eye on what’s happening in west Kent as seems to keep changing as to whether we’ll get any/much with storm Emma coming.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 28/02/2018 21:07

The bbc is forecasting a low chance of mainly light snow for tomorrow. Whilst having an amber warning underneath that for heavy snow. Which could potentially illustrate how bad their new forecasting is.

GloriaSmud · 28/02/2018 21:08

slightly tired ~ For safety, I would go for train but heavier snow is forecast from tomorrow evening onwards so I'd try and get home before then (and before any cancellations start.) Most of all, keep an eye on the train operators website as a lot of them a few days ago were telling travellers to complete journeys before any bad weather arrived.

Oogle · 28/02/2018 21:14

Thank you LadyFlump, that makes sense Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2018 21:18

Bach yes, I think you'll get snow tomorrow :)

Rhodiolia, you probably won't get very much.

Arti, instability is driving the development of new snow showers, but how far they are going to penetrate is something I don't know.

I've been looking at Metoffice, Dark Sky and Google Weather. Metoffice seems fairly accurate over the space of a day, though the timings can be a bit off. Dark Sky v good at predicting sudden snow that I wasn't expecting. Google Weather slightly meh.

We've had snow on and off all day (SW London). Really hoping it calms down before the weekend when I have a busy couple of days in store. DH looks set to be trapped in Aberdeen judging by the average delay on Aberdeen to Heathrow flights. No point in him coming back hours late to spend half an hour at home.

ConfusedDotty · 28/02/2018 21:27

Clear skies here now, South Tyneside. Not snowing at long last, although it’s windy. It’s such a change to just an hour ago. There’s more of a chance of me getting into work tomorrow hopefully.

Gertrudethestag · 28/02/2018 21:30

We just had about a minutes worth of hail! So random!! And loud

Jenasaurus · 28/02/2018 21:30

The beast from the east has slightly ruined a small patch of grass! Not much of a beast :)

SlightlyTired · 28/02/2018 21:30

Jenasaurus · 28/02/2018 21:32

BBC website says only flurries of snow for Crawley, Met Office says 12 hours of snow ...Which is the accurate source and why cant they agree?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 28/02/2018 21:32

My chances of getting into work are variable. Just debating packing a few overnight things.

Although I’ve checked out of work mode for the week so might be a bit disappointed if I do get in.

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 28/02/2018 21:35

Thank you Lady Flumpalot, that makes sense. It’s confusing though!

whyhastherumgone · 28/02/2018 21:37

This is such bizarre weather. None of the forecasts seem to be lining up now with what's going on here in Essex - the wind got up a lot then suddenly dropped, it's been snowing for the last few hours but now petered out only for a random burst of hail and now what sounds like crazy wind again.

I think I'm giving up looking at the forecasts - the meteoradar site has a band of snow over us currently but it's not actually snowing...

We're under a yellow warning - hope everyone under amber and red is stocked up, warm and safe! (Yellows too, but y'know what I mean)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2018 21:41

Sometimes radar can show snow but it evaporates before it gets to the ground. Given how dry the air is, this seems likely to be happening at the moment.
