Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

I'm in SW Cornwall and really interested in Ophelia. I keep checking for updates on wind & waves.

DamsonGin · 14/10/2017 21:05

Sorry, in sw Ireland, Cork, Kerry, Mayo and some others.

gillybeanz · 14/10/2017 21:08

It's still warm in the NW, the sunset was like a summers day.
Was so hot in Manchester and even warmer in Bolton area.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 21:12

Thanks Damson. I see Met Eirann have red warnings.

PortiaCastis · 14/10/2017 21:13

I'm also in Cornwall and keeping an eye on wind and waves, in 2014 we had a terrible storm here with lots of damage so can do without that again

CocoaIsGone · 14/10/2017 21:13

I am reading about this - why are there higher temperatures before a hurricane?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 21:56

Cocoa this time it’s coincidental I think, but in order to form, maintain and intensify, hurricanes need warm sea temperatures and Ophelia has been passing over ocean that is warmer than usual. The warm air that is arriving this weekend is coming up from southern europe.

L0quacious · 14/10/2017 22:09

I've never been aware of higher temperatures before a storm / hurricane but I've been roasting the last two days so I am wary about this next storm.

PigletJohn · 14/10/2017 22:13

my German friend has been posting about warm days and clear sunny skies Envy.

Only had about 10 mins of sun here today Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 22:18

yeah, rubbish sort of warmth here too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 22:20

while we are talking about Ophelia here, another nasty looking storm has popped up in the models. It’s the first time I’ve spotted it, so I have no idea of model consistency, but those in central and southern england might want to check out this thread too

L0quacious · 14/10/2017 22:21

I walked in to the town today and the air was very thick and warm. As PPs said, it felt 'thick'.

Hope the tiles don't blow off my roof.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 22:24

As well as the usual power cut kit, secure trampolines etc, when storms like these threaten, I think it’s sensible just to remind yourself where your insurance documents are and what they cover. Much easier to do that now, than do it in a panic.

NapQueen · 14/10/2017 22:26

Ive taken the opportunity to hang a line of laundry out on the line tonight. Might aswell take advantage of the warm wind.

fairyofallthings · 14/10/2017 22:26

It was really hot in the England/Wales borders earlier, we were out in shorts in t-shirts.

HateSummer · 14/10/2017 22:30

Its 20°C and sunny here tomorrow 😳. It’s The Express scare mongering again.

itusedtobeverydifferent · 14/10/2017 22:37

I’ve just spent a few minutes checking over our home insurance.

QueenJane · 14/10/2017 22:46

NapQueen You're leaving your washing to get darked on?? Shock

NapQueen · 14/10/2017 22:49

Totes.

ItsNachoCheese · 14/10/2017 22:51

Im going to batten down the hatches tomorrow. Thankfully no trampolines are in my vicinity

AnyFucker · 14/10/2017 23:00

Am on holiday in the Canaries and they are having a heatwave right now due to Ophelia dragging warmer air than usual from the South west

It"s 11pm and still 25deg. Am still sat outside in a beach frock.Yesterday the thermometer hit 37deg. There is orange dust everywhere due to the sand from the Sahara.

Weird

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 23:10

HateSummer, like all broken clocks, the Express may turn out to be correct (or approximately so) sometimes,

PurplePillowCase · 14/10/2017 23:18

our neighbours just have a tarp atm (new roof) hope that will hold.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 14/10/2017 23:24

Although the Daily Star which claimed that a hurricane was going to hit “The UK” seems likely to be more accurate than the Express which claimed it was going to hit “Britain”. When you’re less technically correct than the Daily Star then you really are in trouble (granted that residents of Cornwall and North West Scotland should probably be bringing in their garden furniture too).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2017 23:36

Agree with you Calman. What is it with the Express?!
