Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

@Anyfucker I have just left the Canaries! The calima is so strange isn't it? It was 33 degrees on the balcony at midnight last night and looked almost foggy with dust.

Has been strangely really warm and heavy the last two days here in NI and I can hear winds picking up a bit from my bed. So many people, myself included, have been complaining of pressure type headaches today which was weird. We are meant to be hit with it Monday, may check in the morning where my candles are and put the recycling bins into the shed.

Oh dear, I’m in the bottom left hand corner of Ireland!!! I’m getting a bit worried, the last big storm had no warning at all, so waiting is worrying.
So it’s monday morning that the worst of it is? How long will it last, a day?
I’ll have to put away all the garden furniture tomorrow, buy candles, batteries and of course, waffles.

Should be alright here in Birmingham unless it tracks way east. Planning a picnic on Monday Smile.

And yes, Ophelia will have transitioned to an extratropical cyclone, which is the normal kind of storm we get in the UK.

SC I am awake at 4am as there are hugely high winds here now. Reckon it's the hurricane coming through but still roasting hot. There is a bloody door or shutter loose in a nearby property and it is banging away repeatedly Angry

Probably not a beach day tomorrow

3LuckyStars, I think its talking about a four day weather warning but it'll be at least all day Monday.

Much as hate linking to the Sun (hoping the Irish Sun is a little better) this has quite a good list of suggestions. www.thesun.ie/news/1664074/nine-things-to-do-now-before-hurricane-ophelia-hits-ireland-as-met-eireann-put-in-place-nationwide-four-day-weather-warning/

Are you by the sea or prone to rainwater flooding at all?

Report
3luckystars · 15/10/2017 07:57

No I am away from the sea.

It was a bit windy last night but this morning it’s dead calm, total silence, it’s s bit creepy, when you know what’s coming.

Very Warm too here.

I often wonder about people years ago, did they have a sixth sense and take more notice of signs like this.

Very quiet here now too lucky. I dare say they might have been more in tune with the weather, people would have relied on it more through occupations like fishing and farming? Or I could be talking through my hat Grin Stay safe.

Just checked met office for here and warning for possibly rising to 80mph winds along the coast, which is where I am. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Luckily we never flood however, silver linings.

Philip Klotzbach‏@philklotzbach
#Ophelia is a major hurricane at 35.9°N-the farthest north an Atlantic major hurricane has existed this late in the calendar year since 1939

Doesn't mean it will still be a hurricane when the storm hits Ireland / UK. But this 'fun fact' is still a pretty significant.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 08:45

It’s the most easterly too for a major hurricane to form. Quite a remarkable creature!

Report
DamsonGin · 15/10/2017 08:48

So is the Atlantic particularly warm this year, is that's what's driven more major hurricanes?

Report
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 08:50

noaa discussion still reckons it will be post tropical when it hits Ireland.

Report
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 08:50

Damson, yes, in the relevant places it is warmer than usual.

It's very odd here in south yorkshire this morning.

It's warm and muggy and heavy. But with a chilly breeze that feels almost damp. The skies are dark and although there is a cool breeze it's very calm and eerie.

Feels very 'the calm before the storm'.

3luckystars I'm in Ireland and have just seen that Bus Eireann have cancelled school buses for tomorrow in the counties on the west coast.

Yes we will probably all take the day off so. Dh is on both duty so I will ask him to stay at work if it’s too bad tomorrow morning.
I just went out and bought candles but forgot the waffles!

It’s so so warm here now and really calm. Will it all start suddenly or build up over a few hours tonight?

Good luck to everyone facing ex-Ophelia! Stay safe.

Oh it’s starting here, the sky is so dark it’s started raining. It’s still very warm.
I’ve put everything in the garden away in the shed.

I hope it won’t be as bad as forecast.

Oooohh the wind is picking up, you can't see my grass for leaves. I'm in NI so hopefully we will miss the worst of it.

Report
Pinkkahori · 15/10/2017 11:47

Still very quite here. I'm more Midlands direction. Hopefully it won't hit Ireland too hard.
We got badly hit in Feb 2014.
