Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

I'm not sure what happened to the sandbags. Hopefully with a neap tide they won't be necessary. Might have to sort some more out tomorrow morning.

I have family in Cork and anyone who drives is not going to work tomorrow. Assuming airports will be mostly shut. Haven't heard much about it on UK front but it does feel remarkably mild in London for October

Me to. It was blowing a hoolie earlier and now it's perfectly still and warm.
I'm all prepared, garden furniture packed away, barn doors bolted with planters inside, a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge and a good stack of logs in the hall.

Yes, I tidied my garden up this afternoon but I have a climbing rose which is not very well pinned. Not sure what to do about that. I bought a trellis months ago but have not fixed it up yet (can’t really start doing it now!). My fence is rickety and might be done for this time tomorrow too.

Also West coast Scotland, it has calmed down completely, we went for a walk and I was in short sleeves.
Yes, safariboot that line where the wind coming from the southeast is slamming into the wind coming down from the North.
We had the neighbour's trampoline come across the fence taking down the phone line a few years ago. We found springs for many months afterwards.

In Cork here too and schools, shops and businesses closing tomorrow. Meant to be the worst storm in 50 years.
We have put away garden furniture etc and are hoping for the best!

I don't think anything is expected until after 9am tomorrow. This is the first Sunday since early August that we haven't needed the fire blazing. There isn't even a breeze outside at the moment it's quite eerie. I'm really hoping this has been a bit over exaggerated but I doubt it. My neighbours obviously are not too worried, I see they have left furniture on their porch, if that becomes a projectile and hits my car I'll be like a bear.

@mylittlehelper hope everyone stays safe - whatever you do don't head out on the roads tomorrow!!! X

Yes, I have just looked at the weather map posted upthread again, and it shows where I am with no wind at all. Amazing.

Irish metoffice have just issued a red warning for wind over the whole country. Risk of heavy rain and storm surges along some coasts as well.
Stay safe over there.

It was eerily not windy when I got off the bus about 1/2 an hr ago. And surprisingly mild.

Wind has definitely dropped since this afternoon.

I think with the wind being quiet else where, the storm has such a discrete circulation.

It is down to a Cat 1 storm now, so it is behaving as expected so far.

Random quick thunderstorm in SW Cornwall at the moment (and muggy!)

Orphelia is now an ex-hurricane. This in practical terms mostly means that the wind field will now expand.

West Cornwall here and yes big thunderclap frightened me it's very muggy and bit foggy.

In Waterford and bracing ourselves. Anything in the garden that can be moved has been put in the sheds, cupboards and fridge stocked, some meals cooked that can be eaten hot or cold in case the electricity goes, charging phones and laptops now, going to fill a few flasks to have hot water.

I was amused by the woman in front of me at the checkout earlier, she was preparing for the storm and her shopping consisted of a bottle of Bombay Sapphire, 3 large bottles of tonic, large bag of marshmallows and a torch. :)

Waves at the Cornish Contingent

I missed the thunderclap but we had quick loud rain but now back to eerily still, misty and warm. Also SW Cornwall.
