Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

it is eerily calm where I am, sunny and warm, I am going to put a load of washing out and hope it dries before the storm comes. I need to move plants and things on the patio (which I should have planted out and haven't).

Newcastle here and it is like an April/May day. Clear sky; light breeze; warm enough for a tshirt. In fact we are now spring cleaning. The cats are wondering what the fuck is wrong with us.

Igneococcus · 15/10/2017 12:39

What is happening in that bit just North of the storm's eye? Is it formed by the storm? I have never seen that before on the wind map.

I looks on that link as if another one is forming above scotland.

ZepellinBend · 15/10/2017 12:50

Thanks for the heads up smash with the move to amber.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:06

NOAA update

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:06

Igne, no idea, some sort of artefact?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:08

Remember the met office warnings are for NI Ireland is covered by Met Eireann where the winds will be stronger. Waiting for their update.

Pinkkahori · 15/10/2017 13:27

Irish news
It seems to be causing quite a bit of worry.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:34

I can see why tbh.

I think you should tie down the trampoline, yes (unless you’re in Kent in which case it would be an overreaction).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:58

Portia, way for them to wind people up in Cornwall!

There's a reason why Cornwall have a yellow warning and not an amber one. Yes, it will be very windy and wet and it wouldnt be sensible to be on the beach, but the main impact is expected in south west Ireland, running up through Ireland into Northern Ireland.

The problem is, by them doing that, when a significant storm does look likely to hit Cornwall (perhaps as early as Saturday?) they will ignore the warnings that are issued, saying its never as bad as forecast. It's really irresponsible of them.

Dixie, yes. Trampolines are a running joke among meterologists. If you can turn it upside down, thats the most effective way of keeping it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 13:59

though Calman, if they are in Kent, it might be useful to do so in prep for next weekend Wink

safariboot · 15/10/2017 15:59

@Igneococcus do you mean the blue line of calm winds stretching from the eye towards Ireland? That's the weather front I think.

GloriaSmud · 15/10/2017 16:00

Reporting in from a statc caravan near Exmouth (1/2 term holiday this week for Leicestershire) where it's a bit 'calm before the storm' here at the moment. Am watching the weather charts closely as it's all supposed to start early tomorrow with winds increasing around11am.

ItsNachoCheese · 15/10/2017 16:03

Just outside stirling and at the moment the sun is out and its dry. How long it lasts for remains to be seen

washingmachinefastwash · 15/10/2017 16:23

I better get some sandbags for the trampoline just incase.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/10/2017 17:22

Marking place. It is a bit calm before the storm here. But the sea's looking a bit rough already. Definitely feels like something's coming in.

Hoppinggreen · 15/10/2017 17:25

My DD is due to travel Calais to Dover in the early hours of tomorrow morning, lookis like it might be a bit choppy!!
Hope they don't end up stuck in France

riseandfall · 15/10/2017 18:47

Watching carefully, hope everyone is ok overnight and into tomorrow.

3luckystars · 15/10/2017 19:26

Absolutely nothing happening here. I feel like it’s the weirdest day ever. Schools and university closed tomorrow, workplaces closed, everything put away in the shed. I’ve been to the shop 3 times buying more milk and got some candles from my parents who think I am overreacting and nothing is happening.

Will it gradually built up?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 19:31

3lucky, it will steadily ramp up over a few hours before then eventually easing off.

CocoaIsGone · 15/10/2017 19:39

Thank you for answering my question about warm weather earlier. I have another one, i am afraid.

I am on the west coast of Scotland and it is very, very still. It is funny, i have never really thought about the roots of the ‘calm before the storm’ but literally all you can hear is cars. It was windy earlier but has gone very still.

Why is this? Does the storm suck up the energy - or am I too far away for that and it is just coincidence? Thanks to this forum I am learning things I never thought about. I looked at the wind map posted earlier, fascinating, thank you!
