Another heatwave due?

Does anyone know whether we're getting another heatwave after this rain? A friend has said that we're having mega hot weather until September after this spell of wet weather.

Fingers crossed, i saw an article shared on fb about it, but it was from the daily express, they say the same every summer and predict a big freeze every winter, so I'm not holding out much hope.

oh please no - the doors and windows in my flat are all open and it's still 24c. The building hasn't released the heat from the last heatwave.

the last one - boiling office, boiling Tube, boiling home - actually meant that I reconsidered my annual leave though, so at least I have some days stashed up to take if they can predict a heatwave about a week in advance.

Admittedly the flat isn't great but it's better than the office - which hit 34c - and the Tube - lord knows what temp that hits. I normally like hot weather but the triple combo of this is just too much (so far already the hottest summer since I worked in this office and lived in this flat).

I bought some reflective window film and was about to return it - maybe I shouldn't??

god, suffering in a new build here, too. Please no more heat waves, ever!! Sweat dripping down my face, even with a big fan.

Wondered if that refelctive film works, and doesn't feel like you're wearing sunglasses all the time? And what about in winter, doesn't it then stop any warming from the sun too?

Thinking about air con, if I can work out what sort of thing I need to block the top-opening window so that I can stick the hose out, at least in the daytime (ground floor, so can't have windows open at night for ventilation or air con, unless I get some kind of security bars)

Rain is good. Or not necessariliy rain, just breeze and lower temps, please!! At least we're on the downturn after the longer day - surely that will help...

well a 20 year old ish build with cladding which holds heat. I gather the new builds are even hotter and clocking up 26c in the depths of winter.

Mgmt co did say to met that window film might be a waste of money given the cladding.

problem with office is partly many people and partly many computers, all in a small room - the actual build is very old. I do wish there was a max safe working temp. My boss ended up taking a day off sick due to the heat - she is never ill - so if I can get a least a week's warning for an annual leave day - July being quietish - then I think she will be sympathetic, or at least I can ask for extra home working days and park in front of the fan.

I swear I got fan burn on one side of my face in the last heatwave. Such a pity, as I say I do usually like the sun but I think you need a garden and a brolly and no offices or public transport to get the benefit.

Window film - some neighbours bought it, they said it cooled the flat by a couple of degrees, they think. It does make the rooms slightly darker and I like the sunlight so not sure about it. I would take it down for winter. I bought a big roll for £40 but it can still go back. Not sure what to do really. Also not terribly convinced that stopping the windows from getting hot from the inside it the issue - there's secondary glazing and surely the sun heating the outside of the window is the issue?

It's a very small flat so I only face one side (south west) so there isn't another side where I can escape, so to speak.

if there is a heatwave, my parents are actually going away in July, so if it's then, then I could borrow their house but commuting from there would be a bigger nightmare than commuting from here.

I'm going to remove the shelves from my fridge and move into it if we get another heatwave!

Lady, great idea. Wish I didn't have a pathetic small fridge.

I'm reminded of Marilyn Monroe's character in the Seven Year Itch trying to figure it out....she kept undies in the ice box, then she said she could soak the sheets in ice water but "that's too icky".

I live in a new build that apparently is well insulated so that I stay warm in winter and cool in summer. The warm in winter bit works but I cook in the summer. I now keep all curtains (blackouts) closed during heatwaves and have a dyson fan ( parents brought me it out of pity as they couldn't cope visiting the other week) - that just about makes it bearable

There is nothing showing in the models currently suggesting another heatwave, although ECMWF did flirt with the idea a little, so perhaps something to keep an eye on. At the moment, temps look to generally improve a little to the low 20's and it looks to remain fairly unsettled.

Oh hi kitten. Thanks for letting us know what you think, will you be able to keep us up to date if possible please as the really hot weather is something that some of us need to prepare for i.e. Dismantling the refrigerator ready to move in 😉

Lovely day today, light flooding in, makes me think actually the window stuff might be okay with just a slight darkening..but of course you never know what an English summer will bring you!

yes who knows, and I don't always like that feeling of sunglasses, relief to get them off, and I wonder if it might get irritating all the time. But I have such big windows and tiny flat, facing south and west, so really do get all the heat. Ii was looking at the companies that install it rather than the DIY rolls, but not sure which is best. I assumed that if I was installed, it wasn't something you'd take down in the winter, but I don't know. I work from home so am here all day, which gets a bit much. I have a Dyson fan too. But if it gets worse, I might have to consider a portable air con, however awful it might look with hoses out the windows and blocking out the rest of the window! Not to mention the cost. Whatever saving there is on winter bills is going to be out done by all the extra electricity now, but I'm just melting!

Hemi, you've been looking at proper firms installing it? Do they install it indoors or out? I can't see how it helps to be inside because the outside of these windows get so hot, but as a diy task it has to be indoors for me, the windows don't open fully and I'm on the fourth floor. I think it's secondary glazing rather than double so I even wonder if it might damage the window by deflecting heat through the gap. I can put it on the outside of the balcony door though.

With a proper installation firm, I thought they had a kind that would block the heat but not compromise your light?

Tomorrow's going to be very nice, I think 23 ish so just right. Flat will get hot but not unbearably.

Still haven't returned the film I bought, have another couple of weeks before I lose the chance to get a refund. Will wait till last minute to decide.

God I hope not, I'm 38 weeks pregnant and only just survived the last one. At least grass pollen season is nearly over so I won't be wanting to scratch my eyes out/tear my nose off Confused

Ii think the films go on the inside, but they reflect the heat and light, and supposedly make some difference. I'm not sure how much though - was hoping someone would have tried them! There seems to be a selection of choices, reflecting varying amounts of heat and light, and the range in how dark/coloured they are - but even the most clear ones I think must darken it somewhat. Possibly not too noticeably, though. They talk about which types of windows/glass it's suitable for or not, so would probably address the question of secondary glazing. I don't actually know what my windows are made of/how they're glazed, and not sure how ti find out! I'm sure it would be much more expensive than DIY, but I don't know how much. They do also sell it for DIY jobs. I just googled solar films, and lots of companies came up. I was hoping for recommendations from someone!

I have been recommended Pinguino portable air con, but they are many hundreds :o
