Another heatwave due?

Does anyone know whether we're getting another heatwave after this rain? A friend has said that we're having mega hot weather until September after this spell of wet weather.

Looking pretty warm/hot in the south to the weekend, then it should cool down.

Slimthistime · 04/07/2017 15:39

Thanks Kitten
I'm putting up the film on the bedroom window tonight so I guess tomorrow and Thursday will be a good test.

Iris65 · 04/07/2017 15:45

Heat makes me ill. I have a heart condition and am taking medication which means that I cannot cope with hot weather. A friend has a Dyson fan which cost over £350 but is brilliant. I couldn't afford that but I did buy a tower fan for £40 which is almost as good and very quiet.
Fortunately I have finished work now so if there is a heatwave I can just stay home with the fan humming away.

lieka · 04/07/2017 16:58

I have Aspergers and just can't cope with heat (or smells, or noises, or you name it...) - it makes me unwell every time.

I found the Dyson fan to be an overpriced piece of kit myself when we tested it. If you ever have that type of money, I can't think why you wouldn't go for a small AC unit instead! Bit quieter I suppose though.

Tomorrow and Thursday look to be the worst, though humidity is lower than I thought, so maybe it won't be as unpleasant as the last one?

Slimthistime · 04/07/2017 18:07

Lieka, as previous posters have said, the problem with air con is you may have nowhere to vent it. I will look at that next year in case products have developed to account for these kinds of window design.

Retuned home to find flat 26 degrees (not surprised as office and tube very hot) and not meant to fix film to Windows while they are hot, according to instructions.

It's not my imagination is it? It's much hotter than was forecast, today and yesterday. I think it was meant to be 20 in my postcode today, just walking back from station I think 25 so was probably hotter while I was at work. Once again, I can't face turning on the oven for dinner in this tiny hot box....!

MachineBee · 05/07/2017 08:18

It's the humidity that is making it worse. I would suggest putting the film on first thing in the morning before it get hot. Thunder storms are forecast for early Thursday too, so that should mean the glass is definitely cool enough to apply. It doesn't matter if it's raining outside.

As for cooking, Salads, Salads, Salads! And couscous is your friend. All you need is a kettle and bowl. Ignore the instructions to cook in a saucepan. Just pour boiling water on to the couscous with whatever spice/herbs/seasoning you like. Leave for 10 mins, add a knob of butter/olive oil and fluff with a fork. Et Voila!

Slimthistime · 05/07/2017 11:40

Machine thanks for trying to be helpful
It's just I'm veggie so I feel as if I am made of cous cous salad at the moment as it's been boiling in the flat since May!!

I put the film on late last night - only bedroom, will do balcony door another night as out this evening
Will be interesting to see how it fares....

MachineBee · 05/07/2017 13:15

Fair enough. I hope the bedroom is cooler for you tonight.

ladybird69 · 06/07/2017 01:07

It's been a hot one today hope everyone is coping ok. I've been filling water bottles and putting them in the freezer that's been a big help. Roll on autumn.

It was unbearable on the London Underground yesterday .

ladybird69 · 06/07/2017 03:49

Omg ava that gives me a panic attack just thinking of it. I'd just melt.

OP posts:
Slimthistime · 06/07/2017 11:33

yes, the underground was revolting yesterday. I'm working at home today, flat is sweltering, roadworks outside....grrr.

I spent the evening in a restaurant with air con and even then, my poor friend had a bit of turn because of the journey (there was no midpoint for us to meet that didn't involve the Tube). Happily for her she is leaving London!

The film has made no difference at all. I suspect the mgmt co were right and there is too much wall with cladding for window film to help. Maybe the professionally made and fitted stuff is good - I see so many modern buildings made with loads of glass, I hope residents aren't just sweltering in there!

I find the BBC forecasts very irritating at the moment. They say "it will be warm" just like they say "it will be chilly" when it's blooming -5. But again, online I think no one predicted this week's hot weather until a couple of days before. So OP friend was actually right - it might not be a 30+ heatwave but it is very hot and humid and I'm not convinced yesterday was 26.

My friends I met last night, and my sister, they really like the heat too and we are all a bit baffled this year at how crap it is making us feel. Ages range from 28-45 so it's not perimenopause!

I think it's started very early hence feels too much. My friend reminded me her kids spent half their summer holiday in the paddling pool last year - I remember now, that's true, but I don't remember it feeling hellish.

I am also thinking roll on autumn, which I have never thought in my life. That said, not sure how many posters feeling the heat are Londoners, but the incredible building and increase in population may be making the heat feel worse?

Delatron · 06/07/2017 15:20

Agree, it's 31 today here in the south, I'm not sure that was forecast. Also been hot and sunny all day and was supposed to be more cloud. Anyone had any of the thunder predicted? Ours has gone from the forecast.

Slimthistime · 06/07/2017 15:46

31 makes much more sense! I think the thermostat is going to switch the temp display off again today. Out again tonight luckily - and a friend with a car is picking me up - only person I know with a car in London!

My area was set to be 26 and cloudy. No cloud, full on sun. Thunderstorms also disappeared off the forecast - so not even correct about 12 hours in advance at the moment.

the window film is hotter than the window usually gets. Sorry to be thick but is that normal? I realise it's supposed to absorb the heat but surely if it's hotter to touch than the actual window it's just spreading more heat around? or is it concentrating it near the window? Needed to pay more attention to physics in school......

at least I'm not in the office, their thermometer is up to 33 now so I expect they will get sent home shortly.

dementedma · 06/07/2017 15:50

Agree, send it to Scotland. Sick of grey skies and rain, especially now it's the school holidays.

gluteustothemaximus · 06/07/2017 15:56

It's about 29 indoors here.

I have a poorly baby with 102 fever and this heat really isn't helping Sad

Slimthistime · 06/07/2017 16:26

demented - house swap?

gluteus - poor baby, I hope she feels better soon.

MachineBee · 06/07/2017 17:01

The film is supposed to reflect the heat, not absorb. Sorry it's not working for you.

I can't believe this heat is going to continue all summer - it's Britain FFS!

Slimthistime · 06/07/2017 17:24

Machine, is it you who has it on the ceiling? I'm thinking that logic dictates film on the inside of the window has got to absorb...which is one reason why I asked if it went inside or out initially.

sorry, boring science questions! There may be a science bit on MN where I should ask....

I had a shed load of cardboard left over from when I had a desk delivered - I have now made impromptu screens to cover the windows as well the curtains being drawn. It might be imagination but I think it's helping....should have saved money on the fancy film!

Slimthistime · 06/07/2017 17:36

PS if I believed weather forecasts, then there is no chance of cool air - well cool enough to cool the air in the flat. Also not seeing much rain which will be a pain for those with gardens.

I am going to make a midsummer resolution to not complain about winter ever again! I will rely on MNers on the Weather to hold me to that. Oh wait - I do reserve the right to complain about snow..... Grin but not cold. I won't be moaning about that again.

MachineBee · 07/07/2017 07:06

We have half a solid roof and then a glass ceiling that slopes at an angle to the glass wall. I think you need to let out the heat in your flat otherwise the heat in the flat will just be reflected around the flat.

I always open windows when the sun isn't on the side of property and close to just allow a bit of air through when it is, plus I close blinds and/or curtains when it is. I can't do this in conservatory but the film has helped with this.

gttia · 07/07/2017 07:42

It's warm already here in the south east. I have no idea what to wear to work today. I am enjoying the warmth this year seeing the children in their shorts in the park, but the evenings are very warm. We have a loft conversion and it's unbearable at night in there. Do we know when it is going to break

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2017 08:33

One more day of this heat then it cools down again.

Slimthistime · 07/07/2017 14:01

Thanks kitten
Machine, the whole flat only faces south west and the windows don't open properly as said - I think irs a safety thing for kids. Grr. So you can't really let heat out effevtibely but last night was very warm anyway.

Don't houses also have a problem if the outside air is hot?

Also keep in mind, higher floor = more heat.

At least it's unusual, everyone at work is moaning. Told 26 today, not con inched, central London definitely higher.

gttia · 07/07/2017 17:19

Thanks kitten, be nice just a few degrees cooler for rest at night if nothing else
