uh oh

No idea where this sprung up from, I've been a bit neglectful. Warnings of a short period of 70-80mph winds. Very nasty. Met office warning of widespread disruption, unsurprising if winds are to be that strong.

Can people keep this one bumped please, its going to catch a lot of people out I think.

It's pretty blowy here (just outside Bristol ) and local news is reporting a tree blocking one of the major routes (A4)

Newtssuitcase · 22/02/2017 18:28

How bad is an amber warning? DH has to do a 2 hour drive back from Lincoln at 11.30pm tomorrow and I'm a bit concerned

atheistmantis · 22/02/2017 18:41

I think the worst of it is in the morning?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2017 18:57

if you do mean tomorrow night Newt it will be through by then, so although there may well be trees down, with care he should be ok.
Amber warnings for wind tend to be quite nasty.

Typical February in Scotland then.

Does anybody know or have any experience of what the likely effect / damage could be with the forecast 70-80 mph winds? I find the amber warning information a bit vague and theoretical.

I am in the North West Wales coast -it looks like we will get the brunt of it. I was hoping to go out tomorrow wih the kids (on foot or by bus) in order to avoid cabin fever, but perhaps we should stay indoors?

TIA

runninglikemad · 22/02/2017 19:16

I think I would be staying put Ohtoblazes at least until Friday when it looks a lot calmer.

SloanePeterson · 22/02/2017 19:18

No one near me seems to be taking this seriously at all despite the amber warning. I had looks of incredulity when I was telling people at school pick up that I'd spent the afternoon shoring things up the garden and weighing down the trampline. It's felt very blustery here today with barely 20mph winds so I dread to think what the 60mph ones will bring tomorrow. I hope everyone stays safe.

The Storm came last night for us here in North Yorkshire. Had the last of it this morning. According to Met Office it's over the Atlantic now???

user1487704718 · 22/02/2017 19:23

Ohhoubadkitten Ha I'm in the one area that isn't covered by any warning.... Though we had the Storm last night???

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2017 19:33

here in the wmids it is still quite calm. now. the calm before the storm. we are back inside for the duration now.

SealSong · 22/02/2017 19:42

I'm actually a bit anxious about Doris...I live on top of a very exposed Pennine hill, right in the middle of the amber alert zone. Plus I have to be out and about driving in the district for my job tomorrow. Not looking forward to it at all.
It was bad enough for wind here on Tuesday night, I was actually scared at times (and I'm used to wind here) as it felt a LOT stronger than the 40-50 miles per hour predicted.

Newtssuitcase · 22/02/2017 19:44

user1487704718 that wasn't it yesterday. It is over the atlantic but its heading our way.

user1487704718 · 22/02/2017 19:45

It's not, it's headed for Iceland then North America x

Newtssuitcase · 22/02/2017 19:49

Not according to the met office Confused

user1487704718 · 22/02/2017 19:52

I use TAFS (Terminal Airfield Forecasting System) for my job which are the most accurate forecasting systems in the planet. Also on the Shipping Forecast earlier they referred to the last of the storm to dwindle out today....

user1487704718 · 22/02/2017 19:53

Met Office are known as Clairvoyants in the Aviation Industry! They just guess things and get people worked up...!!

GloriaSmud · 22/02/2017 19:55

I think this is Doris off the west coast of Ireland.

Our local (East Midlands) forecast said to expect the strongest winds between 3-4pm tomorrow, just in time for the school run.

Newtssuitcase · 22/02/2017 19:59

Well I am no expert but having just checked the METAR TAFS report for our area the wind speed is currently 7kts and is due to raise to 50kts with heavy rain. That's' storm force 10.

user1487704718 · 22/02/2017 20:00

This is the Metar TAF Aviation Forecast for Leeds Bradford Airport (EGNM)

Just to translate, the first section says the Forecast is valid from 2200-1920 (Zulu) Thursday then the second section shows a high of 26knots (KTS) & a low of 11KTS in the West until 7.20pm.

Maybe the South are expecting a tail end of the Storm and that's what Met Office are expecting?? Who knows

What area are you in Newt?

Newtssuitcase · 22/02/2017 20:05

Eats Mids - Notts. I'm guessing its the East midlands airport dot that I'm currently looking at.

Oh good, sounds awful for East Mids tomorrow.. eek!

Archimandrite · 22/02/2017 20:24

Well I thought we had our helping of Doris last night and this morning in Leeds. It was really windy. Since mid-afternoon though it's been really calm again. I don't know whether to expect it to all whip up again tomorrow morning or whether that was it for us?!

Whatslovegottodo · 22/02/2017 20:52

In Cheshire middle of Amber warning for winds and yellow for snow and rain, lots of trees around the house and all routes too. Also lots of driving tomorrow including to Merseyside and Ellesmere Port, then over to north staffs later. Am I doomed? Sad
