Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

I'm in London...it's not going to snow. Every year. All over fb and the odd phone call. It's going to snow in the next few days. Meant to be heavy snow next week. Bla bla every year about the same time. If barely ever snows and when it doestrogen it's very light and has melted within an hour.

Anyway snow in banned. Messes up travel and makes things difficult.

cx5221 · 09/01/2017 11:59

I've just ordered sledges off eBay Grin I'm the idiot who loves snow!

DesolateWaist · 09/01/2017 12:52

There are snowflakes on my weather for Friday and Saturday!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2017 14:10

Yes! I've had to hold my nerve a bit with this one. But until snow actually happens I'm not going to be doing any told you sos. especially as then when I'm wrong next time I'll feel like a right wombat.

Basically the coastal areas are most at risk because the wind is generally northerly, what we need to do now is to look for any tilts in the wind direction. They can force snow streamers to run through along estuaries into central England. This has happened in the Thames valley for instance several years ago when huge amounts were dumped over night in central southern England. Similar things happen through the Wash and around Liverpool inland. So all eyes on the wind direction.

North Hampshire has lost its snowflake Sad

We seem to have gained a yellow snow warning though.

BiddyPop · 09/01/2017 15:31

From glancing at the model shown up the page, it looks like it will all be on the eastern side of the Irish sea, and not on the western side....Sad

I know Met Eireann are muttering about snow, but for northern areas. It doesn't feel like they think it will happen across the country, just bitterly cold but positive temps. Meanwhile YR has us having bone dry weather all week (no precipitation at all) until Sunday morning when it is already starting to warm up.

Lorelei76 · 09/01/2017 15:36

just as the weather websites I use made the snow vanish, the Met Office have said snow for London but they are saying Thursday/Friday rather than the Friday/Sat I spotted on other websites.

It also wasn't originally meant to rain all day today - at least, no one said that for my area last night. Meh.

Lorelei76 · 09/01/2017 15:37

oops no spoke to soon
Wunderground has it back again.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 09/01/2017 15:54

MooseyMoo · 09/01/2017 16:36

Just looked at weather warnings on metoffice website and I'm surrounded by snow warnings but none for where I am 😭 (Oxfordshire)

leesmum · 09/01/2017 17:08

Can Manchester people get a bit excited or are we likely to miss out again? Ta Kitten and Gloria Grin

notsomanky · 09/01/2017 17:11

I refuse to be excited til the first flake falls here
leesmum

My face book memories are full of pics from the winter 2009/2010. we were knee deep in snow in January then!

PointlessUsername · 09/01/2017 17:54

Every site i have looked at today has a different forecast for london thurs/fri/saturday Confused

Ranging from sunny and cold, wet and another says snow.

BestIsWest · 09/01/2017 18:01

Sugning in from South West Wales. Not expecting anything down here.

pepperrabbit · 09/01/2017 21:20

I would love to see even a single snowflake, we haven't seen any snow for about 2 years (and I have a new weather station!) though there was a day in 2015 when I went to work and the kids said it had snowed while I was out!

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2017 21:23

leesmum and notsomanky ~ think you might get some snow showers.

BBC report here about the coming cold weather. I'm liking, "BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood said "almost anywhere" could see some snow by the end of the week." As I have no snow forecast at all whichever forecast I'm looking at, I'm holding on to those words!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2017 21:41

The words of the warnings are quite exciting!

"cold air originating over Arctic Canada will affect the area from Wednesday evening through Thursday, bringing snow showers and strong winds. Wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected in exposed coastal areas and on hills in association with snow showers, leading to temporary blizzard conditions. As well as reduced visibility, 2-5 cm of snow could accumulate anywhere within the warning area, with 10-20 cm possible above 300 m. Lightning may accompany the heaviest showers, with potential disruption to power supplies as a consequence."

OYBBK thanks for all your weather threads. The snow watch one is my absolute favourite. The Met office warning for my area on Thursday has a yellow warning. But only

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2017 22:03

snow is precipitation. Those odds I think are still purely computer generated with no human input, so they can often be odd.
if you look at the warnings there is often extra input from a chief meteorologist and what they say over rides anything the computer models might churn out. There is still an art to forecasting.

🌨☃️ I love snow.

georgedawes · 09/01/2017 22:25

How exciting! Am in the Peak District and we've had so little snow this winter, only a tiny amount on the tops. The local Facebook weather site is saying now though we might get a fair bit on Thursday. Hope it happens, dd and the dog are desperate for a snow day!

ThornyBird · 09/01/2017 22:29

I'm trying very hard to stay calm but there have been murmers of snow warnings down here in Cornwall. Not at all excited. Oh no. Not at all. Xmas Blush
