Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

Hello kitten, thank you for starting this thread. Very much looking forward to snow watch and hoping it won't be the usual tease and let down!

As an interested person, can you recommend any good websites or forums where I can try and learn more about the models and such like? Where did you start?

2017watchoutherewecome · 07/01/2017 06:03

Snow in Leeds this morning Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2017 09:10

How is that possible 2017? your min temperature last night was around 7c.

Stairs - I did the open uni course in Understanding the Weather. They have a new course now.

I don't remember which websites I learned from but metlink looks good.

Hang around ukww and compare what they are saying to charts. Become a member though as one of the boards is hidden.

You can also join the Royal Met Soc if they have meetings near you. I struggle to get to mine now, but they have a really good range of topics and weather conferences. I've been to quite a number of conferences and there is nothing like having it spelled out for you!

It's still there!!! the snow is still there for Friday in today's gfs. Right across the uk. But the met office aren't showing it. They show cold and dry. waah.

I'm keeping the faith though. There is a reasonable chance (certainly not guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination!) of snow next weekend. It's the most promising charts we've had this winter.

I'm in London. Would love a bit of snow.

BankWadger · 07/01/2017 09:18

It's not allowed to snow next weekend. I'm moving house!

GloriaSmud · 07/01/2017 10:54

Yay ~ the annual SnowWatch thread!
I'm hopeful for next weekend as well when it comes to the possibility of snow as the GFS has 'floated' the idea of snow for a while. There's been the odd run of it disappearing but it seems to keep coming back to end of the week/next weekend each time. Hopefully we'll look like this >Xmas Smile (needing warm woolly hats) by this time next weekend!

StairsInTheNight · 07/01/2017 11:09

Thank you, I will look at those websites. I know nothing, and I do find it fascinating!

I think you explain what's happening really well, in layman's terms, btw. Smile

BishopBrennansArse · 07/01/2017 16:40

Looks like 3 hours of snow for the SE in the early hours of Friday morning then the rest of the time we miss out Envy

Pleasssssseeeeeee tell me we will get it as far south as Portsmouth/Southampton!

Bravas · 07/01/2017 16:56

South Manchester? Fingers are crossed.

booface · 07/01/2017 17:01

OOOh I love a bit of snow. My 13 year old is dying to use his sledge, and it just hasn't happened the last few years, so fingers crossed :)

MayhemandMadness01 · 07/01/2017 17:06

Any for Liverpool???

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/01/2017 17:08

Would love some snow this year. Found my photos from 2009 when we had a massive snowfall in the SE. It would be great to be able to take DD out in proper snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2017 19:55

thanks stairs!

I wouldn't even attempt to guess at specific locations yet, though at this present time I'd say eastern areas are more likely than western areas - if it happens!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2017 19:57

I think the thing to remember is it is the same as trying to forecast rain showers in any one particular location but with added will it be cold enough. Tricky one week away.

Bravas · 07/01/2017 20:32

Think I might go and buy a sledge just in case, I didn't get one last year, so ds missed out on the one snow day we had.

DesolateWaist · 07/01/2017 20:40

Not place marking for snow oh no.

seasidesally · 07/01/2017 23:30

same hereWink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 09:47

morning all!

Still there on gfs Risk seems to start thursday evening in more northern parts, transfererring south through the night. Renewed risk on Saturday, which could bring a lot to central areas.

The met office are still having none of it though, so treat the above with pessimism!

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 08/01/2017 10:03

TV forecast yesterday evening mentioned something like, "colder next weekend and could be wintry for some", so think metoffice are aware there could be a possibility of snow but not in a 'full steam ahead' way (yet!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 10:06

I heard that, and they had a little picture of snow falling at the start of their forecast. But the bbc don't use the met office anymore, they use meteogroup so they won't have access to the met office models.
