Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

I popped round to my mums house earlier and picked up the sledge from the shed just in case. Felt like a mad woman walking down the road with it Grin.

DameDeDoubtance · 08/01/2017 19:28

If it snows I will cry happy, happy tears. I'm in East Kent and we normally miss out but who knows, maybe this time!

fortyfourfeasts · 08/01/2017 19:46

Yippee! Thanks kitten, will be following with pent up excitement - ready to be unleashed at the sight of first snowflake!

GloriaSmud · 08/01/2017 20:08

Ooo, we have one snowflake too! It's due at 6am on Saturday morning. I'll make sure I'm up for that!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 20:13

oh no! you are all going to hate me when it doesn't happen!

Don't worry OYBBK I won't. I just like the minor excitement. I'm aware that come the weekend I'll probably still be looking at green grass and bribing the dc's to play outside.

2017watchoutherewecome · 08/01/2017 21:28

I envy you your single, solitary snowflake. We have one raindrop and then brilliant sunshine for two days. We live somewhere that is notorious for a) not getting any snow and b) having sunshine when all neighboring areas have rain or snow.

Oxtailchambermaid · 08/01/2017 22:02

One snowflake for East Yorkshire on Thursday. I am like an Australian I'm that excited Grin. Trying to keep expectations low, really I am.

StairsInTheNight · 08/01/2017 22:57

No snowflake for London. Sad ohhhhh it's ever thus.

Sad
Emochild · 08/01/2017 23:05

According to my phone, West Yorkshire is getting snow Thursday night into Friday morning and Saturday morning Grin

Lorelei76 · 08/01/2017 23:26

The snowflake pics have gone from my postcode, thank fuck!

Lorelei76 · 08/01/2017 23:27

2017 I want to live where you live! Sounds amazing!

Perihelion · 09/01/2017 00:13

Feck all for Edinburgh Angry

DameDeDoubtance · 09/01/2017 07:16

Don't worry OYBBK, it's all about the hope. I know your in the same boat! Fingers crossed though.

DameDeDoubtance · 09/01/2017 07:17

You're!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2017 07:27

Snow is still in the models this morning. The met office is resolutely sticking to its no snow on Thursday night into friday, but for the moment I'm sticking to my guns, that while snow isnt probable, snow showers are highly possible for Thursday night, especially I think in the NW, but generally perhaps anywhere.

Then Saturday gfs shows a trough bringing a heavier bout of snow from the NW across to the south, fizzling out.

The above are all on gfs. ECMWF is keener on prolonged cold I think, but doesnt seem to bring the trough down in the same way. However, the time steps are bigger so I can't see the detail for Saturday.

I think the best we can say, given the lack of consensus is that there will be snow for some this weekend, but where and how much?

DameDeDoubtance · 09/01/2017 07:46

I fully expect to be underneath it when it fizzles but there is still hope, first proper hope of the year! Cheers for the update Kitten.

Ilikesweetpeas · 09/01/2017 08:05

Love this thread! I like snow and we're well overdue some! BBC Isnt forecasting any (north west) but XCODE weather which is mentioned previously as being quite reliable has us down for snow all day on Thursday so fingers crossed

Ilikesweetpeas · 09/01/2017 08:06

Should be XC not sure what auto correct was doing there!!

BishopBrennansArse · 09/01/2017 09:04

Depends what I'm looking at. UKMO says no, AccuWeather says yes on Saturday as does whatever forecaster Apple use. Net weather GFS charts keep changing.

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2017 09:45

OYBBK ~ I like how you're disagreeing with the metoffice!
Countryfile last night said snow showers really anywhere, Friday/over the weekend.

This morning I've got for the end of the week/weekend:
My one snowflake (bbc/metoffice) for 6am Saturday morning for Leicester has disappeared.
Netweather, TheWeatherOutlook and XCWeather ~ No snow

WeatherPro (on my phone ~ meteogroup) ~ thinks I've moved from Leicester to Grantham Confused (no snow forecast for Grantham either!)

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/01/2017 09:52

I'm not far away from you Gloria - just over the border in Northants and my Netweather forecast has fluctuated from last week having an 80% chance of snow at the weekend to today's 0% Sad. I suppose I shouldn't be sad because I have to get DD1 to the airport but it's snow SadSad

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2017 11:10

I know Woollybacks ~ just a couple of flakes would do me, enough to say we've had something wintry in the season.

Metoffice have issued warnings for wind and snow, Wednesday into Thursday. (Looks like OYBBK was right and ahead of things there!)

Ilikesweetpeas · 09/01/2017 11:37

How can weather forecasts be so different?!

LadyFlumpalot · 09/01/2017 11:51

Met office app has just updated with snow warnings for Wednesday onwards.
