Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

actually, I'm not sure that is true about meteogroup not using the met office models. I always assumed that they didn't buy them in but there is an interesting blog, which seems very biased but contains useful info here

OK, so if saying now (Sunday) that snow is possible Friday(ish), when in the week will the vague/changeable possibility start to become a possibility (IYSWIM)?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 11:20

I'd say Tuesday for being able to firm up, but for individual locations because temps are pretty marginal and because thursday nights snow is likely to come as squally snow showers, there will be a lot of nowcasting.

Looking forward to watching this unfold. I love the anticipation, will it/won't it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 12:09

Invariably what happens is that after days of forecasting, I watch glumly as everywhere else gets snow and I end up in a snow desert :(

Ta!

Icy temperatures across Europe

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-38546998

though that's all to the south of us, so presumably not the (north?) polar approaching weather that might be arriving in a few days.

FannyCradock · 08/01/2017 12:33

Yippeeee snow Smile

Wishforsnow · 08/01/2017 12:40

Yeah snow! Always lurking on badkittens threads as they seem to be more accurate than on the news!

Polkadotties · 08/01/2017 12:51

Haven't had any decent snow in Essex for years Envy

GloriaSmud · 08/01/2017 13:19

Interesting blog there, OYBBK ~ I'm not sure when the metoffice contract with the BBC ends, it still says their weather's 'in association with the metoffice' on forecasts. So far, I've got the metoffice saying cloudy end of the week/weekend but the WeatherPro (mentioned in the blog and on my phone) is giving 'wintry showers' for just Thursday.

News24 had 'wintry showers even for the south' towards next weekend so it'll be interesting to see who gets it right and what happens. I'm going for snow over high ground but sleety stuff for us.

backinthebox · 08/01/2017 13:29

It is going to snow next friday. I say this with certainty - I am off on my hols and have a fairly solid reputation for having holiday flights cancelled or substantially delayed due to snow in the UK. (Thankfully this does not spill over into my professional life - since I work at an airport!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 13:33

oh you are right Gloria. I thought it had ended but it's not until this spring.

backinthebox ~ I'd say it's guaranteed then!

Metoffice outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:
Tuesday will be breezy, with outbreaks of rain in the west. Turning colder on Wednesday, with wintry showers and strong winds in north and west, and Thursday will be similar.

And from Friday 13 Jan 2017 to Sunday 22 Jan 2017:
Friday and Saturday will see sunshine and snow showers across Britain, the showers probably heaviest and most frequent in the north and northwest. It'll be cold and windy with coastal gales, and frost is likely overnight. Conditions are expected to become more changeable during Sunday and early next week, with rain and possible hill snow pushing west to east across the country. However, the northwest is likely to see most of the rain, with further gales, whilst the southeast could see some more settled weather taking hold. Later next week confidence is low, but signs point towards a continuation of this northwest to southeast split, with the most unsettled weather affecting north-western parts, and a relatively more settled theme elsewhere, albeit with a risk of frost and freezing fog.

Oooo I do love a Bad Kitten snow thread.

Rubs hands together

2017watchoutherewecome · 08/01/2017 14:34

It will snow before Friday, we are having new windows fitted tomorrow so it's pretty much guaranteed.

icclemunchy · 08/01/2017 15:07

If it could not snow next weekend that'd be grand I wanted to take the kids to the zoo for their birthdays!

InMySpareTime · 08/01/2017 15:32

Fingers crossed that it will break through the infamous Manchester Snow Shieldâ„¢ and we'll actually get a decent covering of the white stuff...

CointreauVersial · 08/01/2017 15:42
