Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

Thanks OYBBK and Gloria! It can do what it likes any day bar the 11th and 12th (flying then driving). Netweather is certainly looking interesting, as is Ventusky - I think both are GFS based, however.

GloriaSmud · 01/02/2017 12:14

Still looking cold early next week/getting colder later next week.

PointlessUsername · 01/02/2017 14:59

Will any snow be heading SE way?, Last time was a massive let down.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2017 19:23

too early to say, but we should be keeping an eye on the end of next week.

TheWeatherOutlook are keeping an eye on possible cold weather next week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/02/2017 13:21

looks like it will turn Friday ish, but looking less potent. Cold though, temps close to zero in the day time.

'Tis looking chilly later this week.
Yesterday's update from the metoffice:

UK Outlook for Thursday 9 Feb 2017 to Saturday 18 Feb 2017:
It will turn cold through Thursday, as cloud and patchy rain, sleet or hill snow moves westwards, allowing colder air to feed in from the near continent on a stiff south-easterly wind. Into the weekend, it is likely to remain cold or very cold, perhaps accentuated by strong winds at times. It will be rather cloudy generally, with the best of the brightness in the northwest. Snow flurries are increasingly likely in the northeast, perhaps with snow showers becoming somewhat more widespread across the UK for a time. Widespread frost is likely. Until mid February is looks more likely to stay cold and mainly dry. However, it may be more unsettled and less cold at times in the extreme west with spells of rain, with snow on higher ground.

UK Outlook for Sunday 19 Feb 2017 to Sunday 5 Mar 2017:
Through the rest of February, confidence in the forecast becomes fairly low, although the most likely scenario is for things to remain fairly settled. This would mean that our weather is likely to stay on the cold side, with a lot of dry days and some sunny spells. The nights will bring further frost and fog too. Occasional spells of milder, wetter weather are possible, most likely in the northwest, and then signals for the start of March are weak, but it may turn more unsettled generally.

And more thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook here.

leesmum · 05/02/2017 21:41

Thanks for the update Gloria 👍

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2017 10:20

Although the met office isnt really showing anything, from Wednesday onwards I think that snow showers are possible pretty much anywhere, but especially down the eastern side of the UK, perhaps more widespread light snow on Sunday???

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 06/02/2017 11:07

'Tis looking that way isn't it OYBBK, and looks like it's going to stay cold into next week as well. There's much excitement (at the possibility of wintry stuff) on the netweather messageboards!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2017 12:16

I'll have to have a look :)

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2017 13:34

bbc just mentioned the risk of snow showers.

OP posts:
PestoSnowissimos · 06/02/2017 13:38

Typical! The snow threatens to arrive just as I am set to go skiing - Grrr!!

GloriaSmud · 06/02/2017 14:33

Oh dear Pesto ~ how typical is that!

Metoffice outlook for later this week:
Wednesday to Friday:
Turning colder but largely dry through the middle of the week with frosty starts. Scattered wintry showers will also develop from Thursday, mainly in the east.

And for the weekend and beyond:

UK Outlook for Saturday 11 Feb 2017 to Monday 20 Feb 2017:
A cold east to south-easterly airstream is expected to affect most parts throughout this period. There is likely to be a lot of dry, albeit rather cloudy weather through the weekend, with the best of any brighter breaks expected to develop towards the west and northwest. However, some snow showers are likely to affect the east and northeast, with a small chance of these becoming heavier and spreading to central and some western areas through the weekend. It will feel very cold in sometimes fresh winds with a widespread night frost. Next week there is a chance of some rain or snow affecting the west and northwest at times. Elsewhere it should stay largely dry with snow showers becoming lighter and less frequent. Remaining cold with winds freshening at times.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Feb 2017 to Tuesday 7 Mar 2017:
Through the rest of February, the most likely scenario is for things to remain fairly settled, meaning that our weather is likely to stay on the cold side, with a lot of dry days and some sunny spells. The nights will bring further frost and fog too. Occasional spells of milder, wetter weather are possible, most likely in the west and northwest. The signals for the start of March are currently very weak, but it may turn more widely unsettled and also milder.

And thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook

CatThiefKeith · 06/02/2017 17:51

I'm supposed to be driving from Kent to Minehead on Friday, and then back again on Monday.

Will it be safe to do so? And will I miss the snow if I do?

booface · 06/02/2017 21:11

Thanks for the posts, I am going to buy some more rock salt - Looks as if Kent might be getting a bit of snow... we'll see!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2017 22:06

CatThief, it'll probably be safe, but you may see a little snow at home on friday.

OP posts:
Titsywoo · 07/02/2017 21:03

We've now got snow showing all day on Thursday and most of Friday (East Surrey). No ideal as I have to work and if it gets bad they shut most of the hills between my house and my job. Argh!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2017 21:12

who is showing that Titsy? I can see maybe a little light snow for you Thursday and Friday. Again Sunday.

OP posts:
Titsywoo · 07/02/2017 21:37

Metoffice shows light snow through most of Thursday then on Friday morning

Titsywoo · 07/02/2017 21:37

I'm on the border of Surrey and Croydon

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2017 21:46

I've just had a look at the met office, I'm intrigued by the difference that is being shown to both of us. My one shows a little light snow in the early hours of thursday and the same friday.
Are you on the website or the app?

OP posts:
nannynick · 08/02/2017 06:38

Last night, BBC app was showing snow for north Surrey early hours of Friday, now it just shows dark cloud symbol. Is it that snow is hard to predict?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2017 07:14

It's harder than light rain or drizzle, which forecasts often miss :) you have added difficulties of the temperature factor.

OP posts:
Titsywoo · 08/02/2017 10:01

The website. It's changed now to pretty much nothing. Odd that we were seeing different things!
