Disclaimer: This is for fun, any accuracy, especially this far out is entirely coincidental! I'm an amateur forecaster. Things will change between now and Christmas day

Christmas Eve just squeezes into GFS model range so here we go :) as other models come into range, I'll be using those too.

23rd December High pressure looks to dominate. Cold - temps close to freezing. A little potential for snow, even in the south. Ensembles almost all show cold, so confidence is more reasonable than usual at this time frame.

Christmas Eve Cold weather with a low potential for snow continues.

Very snowy here today, a fair blizzard blowing outside just now. Wouldn't be surprised if snow gates near us get shut shortly Xmas Sad

nannynick · 26/12/2016 10:33

Still snowing but not huge amounts.

Wonder if the snow blizzard will get to me, in East side of Cairngorms.

howyalikedemapples · 26/12/2016 10:48

Don't know Nanny, it's been heavy since about 5 this morning, we are near dalwhinnie, can see a9 from house and no cars for about 10 mins now

Sorry about the fingers!

There are actually hills beyond that rise but can't see them at all! PJ day I thinkXmas Smile

StairsInTheNight · 27/12/2016 18:08

I heard there is a lot of cold air coming down after NY, any chance of huge snowdrifts in London anytime soon OYBBK?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2016 18:23

Stairs, snow is possible, the models have shown some potential recently. Unfortunately GFS moved the high pressure in the wrong direction for snow! Keeping a really close eye on it all at the moment.

This Netweather blog mentions a cold start to 2017.

Temperature's dropped quickly here ~ 'tis a chilly -1.1C at the moment and we're under a weather warning for fog.

StairsInTheNight · 27/12/2016 20:03

Always the wrong direction! Ah well, lots can change in short time, sounds like I shouldn't write it off just yet then Xmas Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2016 16:34

nasty accidents caused by black ice and fog.
I really hate freezing fog.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 28/12/2016 16:48

Truly awful accident Sad
Warnings for more freezing fog tonight.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2016 17:21

Looks like it will be more widespread than last nights. We had some mist/light fog this morning with a fairly hard frost. Might cancel tomorrow's family bike ride if it gets worse here tonight.

DP came off his bike on the way to work this morning, he's badly bruised.

Give it a miss, imho!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2016 22:48

Your poor dp - ouch! I think we may have to. Just got home from a cross country drive after watching Rogue one (which was superb). Only one slippery road, but on a notorious bend, so we knew to take care. A lot of dense freezing fog about, I was a bit nervous.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 29/12/2016 09:41

Stars ~ hope your DP is OK.

Very frosty here ~ down to -3.5C overnight but has 'warmed up' to -2C now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2016 10:06

I keep glancing at the road willing the ice away. It looks like our freezing fog was too heavy to stay up so it all fell to the ground Xmas Grin (doesn't actually work like that but that's what it looks like)

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 29/12/2016 10:52

Frost is melting where the sun can get to it and we're at a 'pleasant' 1.8C now!

Xmas Grin at 'heavy fog!' I thought we'd got fog forming last night when I went outside.....but then I realised my glasses weren't that clean and all smeary Xmas Blush

GloriaSmud · 29/12/2016 11:16

The latest GFS run for 6/7th Jan onwards looks rather good if you like snow (they're getting rather excited about it on the netweather forum!) Have to see if it happens ~ 'tis a little way ahead into the future when it comes to forecasting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2016 12:08

oh wow, that does look impressive Gloria. A proper snow set up there.

nannynick · 29/12/2016 14:47

Will be interesting to see later runs. I am looking for a weather window to do Aberdeenshire to Surrey drive, I am thinking 3rd Jan may be an ok day between.

Today has been lovely in Aberdeenshire.

DP is ok, though he came off the bike again on the way home (no gritting here!) and walked in with an impressively bleeding nose. He wisely drove into work tonight!

V pleased to hear of snow potential. Fingers crossed.
