Disclaimer: This is for fun, any accuracy, especially this far out is entirely coincidental! I'm an amateur forecaster. Things will change between now and Christmas day

Christmas Eve just squeezes into GFS model range so here we go :) as other models come into range, I'll be using those too.

23rd December High pressure looks to dominate. Cold - temps close to freezing. A little potential for snow, even in the south. Ensembles almost all show cold, so confidence is more reasonable than usual at this time frame.

Christmas Eve Cold weather with a low potential for snow continues.

Envy we don't have a wood burner. We could all sit round the barbecue if the worst came to it. Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/12/2016 20:48

Exit! Grin I think that was wishful thinking!

I think the storm on Christmas day may track further north than the 23/24 storm, taking less of Scotland into the worst of its winds. Fingers crossed.

I'm not bothered about the weather itself we aren't going anywhere, losing power is a concern. We are pretty far north and pretty spread out. Took a few days to get the whole area on last big storm we had. SSE did send out lovely food vans for meals and we did trek into Inverness for an evening in tesco and Burger King Grin

Perihelion · 21/12/2016 08:56

I want to be where Moose is!

Winds have been down graded for Central Scotland for the 25th, but it's having a wee practice today. Think I might actually get wet, dog walking this morning which hasn't happened for weeks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2016 09:05

The storm on christmas day is looking weaker on all models now. Models often struggle with which storm will be strongest in these sort of circumstances.

Was surprised to see on last night's GFS run to see not-so-horrible Christmas Day weather showing for Scotland/North. The 23rd/24th storm is still looking a nasty one though.
(Hope no one minds me posting the) current metoffice weather warnings.

HamletsSister · 21/12/2016 12:07

Hail lashing the windows. Very, very windy. We still have power but not sure how long for. And Friday is to be worse!

nannynick · 21/12/2016 12:46

Snow this morning in parts of Aberdeenshire - Balmoral Castle has posted a video on Facebook.

Looking at the Braemar Snowgate it looks like snow has melted.

nannynick · 21/12/2016 12:48

HamletsSister, hope the power holds. Lashing rain and set to get worse is not great.

sparechange · 21/12/2016 13:08

Does anyone know what the weather is looking like for Boxing day and 27th?

We've got to get a ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and then have a long drive, and I'm really worried about it because we have, have, have to get home that night
They've already cancelled our outward crossing on Friday because the weather is going to be so bad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2016 13:33

It looks a lot calmer at the moment, 26th, still some strong winds around. 27th high pressure takes over.

Heavy snow now at mine Xmas Smile Would love if it hung around until Xmas day

Perihelion · 21/12/2016 15:11

howya where are you?

howyalikedemapples · 21/12/2016 17:34

In the highlands #Perihelion, didn't snow for long but heavy showers blowing through, wonder what we will wake up to tomorrow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2016 18:20

you may end up with some more howya. There's a risk throughout tomorrow for you. Friday is more complicated - could be a right old mix.

Braemar snowgate closed. That's my short route cut off. Melt by Saturday?

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2016 11:08

nannynick (Hope you don't mind me answering) Don't think there's much chance of being able to use that route but would check while traveling. Looks pretty snowy today, rain/snow mix tomorrow during daylight hours but then more snow overnight and throughout Saturday.

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2016 11:12

BBC report here on the possible disruption Storm Barbara might cause.

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2016 18:37

Storm showing up well here.

nannynick · 22/12/2016 22:04

Gloria, thanks. Forecast for Saturday is looking like snow over high ground so could make for a fun drive!

nannynick · 22/12/2016 22:07

4am Saturday is looking particularly not great - so I will need to check the conditions during the journey on Saturday (driving Stoke to Ballater, via Aberdeen if mountain route bad).

Oh OYBBK.
Should we talk quietly and hand over paracetamol and strong coffee?
Xmas Grin
Hope it was a good evening.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/12/2016 09:19

pretty fierce day in scotland, but no one up there needs to be told that! Probably not so much in the way of snow I think until this evening, when the heavy rain could turn to snow for a while.
Fortunately the system is actually further north than was shown a few days ago.

Further south, very windy, wet for all by the end of today but once it clears through it will leave quite a nice clear night, albeit windy.

Tomorrow not a bad day away from Scotland (especially western side). Even there the weather will become less bad. North West England could see some heavy showers or rain for a while. Southern England, perfectly reasonable day.

Christmas day - dull and mild. Some rain and wind in scotland but nothing too terrible, just not seasonal.

Boxing day - colder, sunny for many - in fact rather nice for a walk, if rather squelchy underfoot, some snow showers in parts of Scotland.

For much of the rest of the week high pressure looks to dominate and it looks quite seasonal, if not snowy. A little teaser from GFS for the week they go back to school - it shows a potentially snowy cold set up. Xmas Confused Spect that'll be gone in a model run or two, but it looks quite potentially quite fun!
