Disclaimer: This is for fun, any accuracy, especially this far out is entirely coincidental! I'm an amateur forecaster. Things will change between now and Christmas day

Christmas Eve just squeezes into GFS model range so here we go :) as other models come into range, I'll be using those too.

23rd December High pressure looks to dominate. Cold - temps close to freezing. A little potential for snow, even in the south. Ensembles almost all show cold, so confidence is more reasonable than usual at this time frame.

Christmas Eve Cold weather with a low potential for snow continues.

Some snow would be absolutely lovely - any time after 7pm on the 7th will suit me Grin - I really don't want DS's birthday party cancelled due to bad weather.

nannynick · 30/12/2016 10:52

Cycling on ice is never fun, hope he found driving to be better.

Anniversary of the River Dee flooding today. Not had the huge amount of rain as we did last year so no flood risk today.

Dark clouds appearing today, rain before the snow?

GloriaSmud · 30/12/2016 11:25

Think today is just cloudy for where you are, nannynick. Rain forecast tomorrow before cold arrives, along with snow showers on Sunday and Monday (3rd January looks OK for your journey ~ should be between two bits of cold weather.)

Still looking like there might be a spell of wintry weather from next weekend onwards ~ 'tis still a while away yet though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2016 12:01

Its going to be such a close thing next weekend I think, going to depend on exact positioning of that high pressure and then whether any weather fronts sweep across.

A weather front brings rain south from Scotland tomorrow, across southern England by New Years Day morning. Not terribly festive!

Will there be a January 17' Snow watch thread? Please please please? Thanks Kitten and Gloria

Perihelion · 31/12/2016 00:20

It's fucking bonkers....past midnight, end of December, Edinburgh......12c WTF?
Don't think it's been lower than 10c for over 24 hours. I actually considered cutting the grass today as it seems to have suddenly grown. Finding it hard to believe it's Hogmanay as it is neither windy, baltic or both.
Will go and look at Net Weather in an attempt to cheer myself up or go and book a holiday to somewhere snowy Xmas Sad

nannynick · 31/12/2016 07:23

Been around 12 degrees all night. Certainly bonkers weather for the time of year. Today is set to plummet and end in snow!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/12/2016 07:35

good idea Leesmum :) I'm going to be out today - hopefully not to be swallowed up by the fog! So it will just be a quick look for me this morning, hopefully Gloria will be around to fill in the details.

Heavy rain running through Scotland tonight, cooling down behind the cold front :)

hmm, having a look at the models, I don't think we are quite ready for snowwatch yet - today's gfs pushes snow back to later on next weekend. Let's see what happens over the course of today.

Woken up to 40mph gusts, so feeling slightly more festive Xmas Grin. Still 11c, but to reach freezing tonight. No snow on the horizon though.....

Lorelei76 · 31/12/2016 15:08

Hi kitten
I came on to see if there were any views on longer forecast for London, I want the shit freezing temps to naff off....any chance of that I wonder?

GloriaSmud · 31/12/2016 18:44

Can't see anything much of a snowy nature in the latest runs, except towards the end of them (16th Jan) which is really too far away into the future.

In the meantime, there's a weather front moving down overnight which unfortunately for the north (sort of Yorkshire/Cumbria areas of the UK) will be sitting right over them at midnight just as we're due to start 2017. Xmas Sad Once the weather front has moved through overnight/tomorrow, it's going to get colder with some snow for the hills of Scotland. After that for everyone until next weekend, looks like it's going to be a bit chilly (daytime temps 4-7C), mostly fine but with some overnight frosts.

(Hope I've got some of the above right and Happy New Year everyone! Xmas Smile)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/12/2016 19:03

sounds spot on! Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a good evening and they're not too hungover tired this morning.

2017 is off to a wet start. Temperature's dropping already here ~ high of 7.2C when I got up and it's now 5.6C

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2017 10:03

No real snow showing til mid month now :(

leesmum · 01/01/2017 11:11

Thanks Kitten and Gloria snowy mid Jan is fine with me, my bday 16th and Ds2 the 19th and quite often we've had a sprinkling ❄❄❄

nannynick · 01/01/2017 15:40

Keeps trying to ❄️ and the police have just closed the mountain road (A93 Braemar>Glenshee).

Has the fog finally lifted for those south of Birmingham?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2017 16:26

megletthesecond · 01/01/2017 16:32

Yes. It's been grey and wet since lunchtime.

digerd · 01/01/2017 17:57

This morning at 10am it was very mlld - +8 no wind and no rain although it had rained in the night. I was too warm walking the dog.

But at 2pm there was a northerly chilly wind and it was raining and only 6 degreesConfused. It actually felt colder than 2 degrees less than at 10am.

LadyFlumpalot · 01/01/2017 18:07

It's snowing here in the hills of North Dorset, however, you have to be in the right place. Within a 5 mile car trip we had rain, sleet and snow. Seems that right on top of the hill it's just cold enough to be snow.

StairsInTheNight · 01/01/2017 20:14

I saw that the snow has buggered off. Not fair. Maybe later in Jan if we are lucky...

nannynick · 01/01/2017 22:18

Seeing reports of snow in Yorkshire tonight on Twitter. Have a dusting of snow here in Aberdeenshire.

A light dusting of snow is nice as it looks pretty and does not tend to result in traffic chaos.

Stars GFS is teasing us with cold (possibly snow) the middle of next week but 'tis still a bit into the future to be certain.
Nice frost here overnight~ 1.2C at the moment.
