Disclaimer: This is for fun, any accuracy, especially this far out is entirely coincidental! I'm an amateur forecaster. Things will change between now and Christmas day

Christmas Eve just squeezes into GFS model range so here we go :) as other models come into range, I'll be using those too.

23rd December High pressure looks to dominate. Cold - temps close to freezing. A little potential for snow, even in the south. Ensembles almost all show cold, so confidence is more reasonable than usual at this time frame.

Christmas Eve Cold weather with a low potential for snow continues.

About this proper cold over Europe...? We're off to Prague for Christmas, should I be getting even more excited than I already am, OYBBK?

BankWadger · 08/12/2016 18:24

As ling as it doesn't snow before I manage to move house a white (either frost or snow or sand) would be delightful.

readyforsunshine · 08/12/2016 18:44

Love this thread, frost & clear & bright would be lovely, so long as it's not grey & damp.

StairsInTheNight · 09/12/2016 04:44

Oh lovely, thank you OYBBK, always enjoy these threads though I do not hold out any real hope of Christmas snow, a nice frost would do.

London horribly mild a few days ago, much prefer the frosty coldness and looking forward to its return.

nannynick · 09/12/2016 06:37

Cold crisp frosty the 22nd-24th and then snow from 4am on Christmas Day would be nice.

I too am travelling on Christmas Eve so need to be able to drive through high and low areas of the British Isles.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2016 07:18

Morning all :)

23rd December
Xmas Shock noooo!!! The high pressure is shown to crumble - instead GFS shows a very wet and stormy say. Silly, silly GFS.

Christmas Eve
Xmas Sad I hope Santa has good waterproofs and strong reindeer

Christmas Day
I'm dreaming of a soooogggy Christmas.....

Ok, nobody panic, GFS has overcooked rain recently. It probably went to the pub last night and has a terrible hangover this morning. When I look at the ensembles, they show that the operational run is waaaay out on a limb from all of the other runs. The rest show much more seasonal weather.

Shock say it isn't so!

That's so 2016, mind...

nannynick · 09/12/2016 08:00

I'm dreaming, of a soggy Christmas.
Just like it was the year before.

Let's just hope the flooding, does not come a returning, as the riverbanks are not yet restored.

I'm dreaming of a soggy Christmas....

ExitPursuedBySantaSpartacus · 09/12/2016 08:04

I'm in Switzerland for Christmas.

DoItTooJulia · 09/12/2016 08:11

Place marking.

We have Aussie relatives here-they NEED the snow!

nannynick Xmas Grin < rain hat.

I saw the GFS and compared it with the ensembles, and just read all the doom and gloom on the netweather winter threads and thought, 'but it's just one run and Christmas is way ahead yet, it could/probably will all change again.' Xmas Confused 'Tis too early to be writing off the chance of a cold/white Christmas already.
(But I'll take soothing Wine anyway - never too early in the day for that!)

fortyfourfeasts · 09/12/2016 12:34

Love this thread! Thanks kitten. This thread got us home safely a couple of years ago!
Am peeking through my fingers at latest run then, hoping it might change!

RatOnnaStick · 09/12/2016 12:42

Oh I'm late! Thanks for doing this Kitten. Incidently the Fail has us slated for the warmest christmas ever (again Xmas Hmm)

2 years ago it was pleasantly freezing - ice, frost, woodburner didn't go out for at least 10 days. Last year it was soggy I recall. I'd rather have the frost than the sog.

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2016 12:51

The Metoffice outlook over Christmas/into January.

UK Outlook for Friday 23 Dec 2016 to Friday 6 Jan 2017:

Whilst there is a good deal of uncertainty for this period, it is most likely that more settled conditions may dominate associated with high pressure affecting the UK. If the pressure does build, then we can expect drier than average conditions for most areas with lighter winds. Temperatures are also then likely to be below average with an increased risk of frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. There will probably also be some milder, unsettled interludes though, and as we head into the New Year this may become more of a feature in our weather, with the greatest likelihood of changeable conditions in the northwest, giving rain here at times.

leesmum · 09/12/2016 17:13

Thanks Gloria and Kitten your advice is always appreciated WineWine

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2016 18:11

Thanks Gloria :) sounds like a very typical winter set up - a bit of everything possible.

Greetings from Canada! I'll just leave this here ....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2016 20:46

cor Moose - I think all of our pipes would suffer from catastrophic failure at those temps.

OP posts:
nannynick · 09/12/2016 21:38

Have been watching Ice Pilots, who fly in North West Territories. At minus 40 even the planes don't like it.

Is -25 about typical this time of year Moose?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 09/12/2016 21:51

Pretty typical for here. It's a little late, if anything. I'm a Director at our local airport, so I know how much we spend de-icing aircraft!
We also have an ice road just north of us. It hasn't been cold enough for long enough to open it yet.

misson · 09/12/2016 22:07

Nooooo!

This is all my fault. I bought the sledge.

Maybe if I ebay it the cold weather will come back.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 09/12/2016 22:29

Worth a try Mission. Grin

misson · 09/12/2016 22:40

Would I have to sell it as second hand?

Unused red plastic sledge. Not convinced it will make 99p but yes, might be worth a try.
