...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!

Agh! Just looked at the weather app and next week looks like hell! On Tuesday, when we have a big event and I'll be running everywhere and driving for hours, it'll be over 30 Confused

Every bloody heatwave I get sick, moody, and then also don't sleep for weeks. Every time! No idea why. I dread them

... Are there any fellow heat-haters about on Mumsnet who fancy a whine? may well just be me

I know Huff, it's an odd sort of "phobia" to have isn't it? But I guess if (say) the colour blue made you throw up and get ill a lot, you'd be phobic of that too, so in that sense it kind of makes sense. Sometimes anticipating the worse makes it easier at the time, I hope that's the case for you this week!

Demented, I think I was wired wrong, because I love rain, but I do hate how miserable it makes everyone else, so I feel for you. (It's probably easier to love cooler weather when you don't have stir-crazy kids around or a garden to take care of as well).

Didn't sleep much last night, kept waking up warm and with an agonising sore throat - of all the times to develop a cold FGS! Haven't had one for years, forgot how rubbish they are.

Hang in there, should cool down by Thursday. I think when it quickly ramps up as it has it's difficult to adjust.

NeedACleverNN · 17/07/2016 21:20

I must admit as a hot weather annoyed person, I actually enjoyed today.

The first time in a long time I've enjoyed a hot day. Probably because it was a dry heat and not a muggy one.

Not looking forward to sleeping in it though

liletsthepink · 18/07/2016 11:10

I have found my people! DH and I both hate the heat to the extent that we don't travel abroad to any hot places. I get so fed up of people not understanding why we would much rather holiday in the UK to avoid the heat.

I am sending good (cooling) vibes to anyone who has to commute or work without air conditioning today or tomorrow.

SunLoather · 18/07/2016 11:45

Top tip - just catch a stinking cold. It makes any weather somewhat more tolerable because you're just waiting for death anyway .

Thank you OYBBK! Knowing there'll be some sleep on Thursday night is a bit of a relief actually. I agree it's the fast ramp-up which makes it worse, no time to acclimatize. Glad you enjoyed it NN, mugginess makes a massive difference.

YY to avoiding hot places lilets; a snowy Christmas market holiday is my fantasy getaway.

No-I absolutely hate the heat here in sw Ireland,I love the cold Grin

Artandco · 18/07/2016 12:10

Where are you all?

I'm in London, it's only this weekend that's been warm enough to sit outside. It's not warm enough for stuff like paddling pools and ice though. It's 23 degrees atm on our terrace. That's tshirt and jeans weather, not bikini and ice baths.

Our weather force cast this week

...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!
Artandco · 18/07/2016 12:15

Yes, in London it also says 29 degrees forecast. But that's between 4-5pm only. At 9am today it was only 19 degrees. Like I said, outside, right now it's 23.4 degrees in zone one London on a roof terrace. Not boiling.
Just the tubes will be hot, but that often are in winter also, just get worse in summer even if temp is only just over 18-20 outside as they are underground

NeedACleverNN · 18/07/2016 12:16

I don't know what our actual temperature is as I don't have a thermometer but I am sat here in a nightdress and I'm still hot and bothered

NedStarksHead · 18/07/2016 12:21

Yes, yes, yes.

I hate the sun, I hate the heat (I'm in Scotland so thankfully it's raining right now). I'm too fat for warm weather so I sweat and chafe, and I have severe hay fever so my eyes blow up like balloons if we even open a window - then they start watering and I can't breath and I'm sneezing and the skin starts peeling off the inside of my eyes so it feels like I've got sand-coated eyeballs.

I really don't like summer.

stumblymonkey · 18/07/2016 12:29

Me...because I'm fat and my thighs chafe so I have to wear cycling shorts under my dresses which make me too hot.

Plus the tube in London is vile in a heatwave. You have a shower in the morning and then by the time you've arrived at work you are a sweaty gross mess.

I hate sticking to the leather sofa or when you sit on a plastic chair and leave an actual bum cheek sweat mark on standing. Grim.

And yes to the hot nights, waking up in sweaty bedsheets, etc.

I used to enjoy them before I put weight on!

^^and therein lies the answer for me!

BeMorePanda · 18/07/2016 12:30

I'm not keen - wouldn't mind if I was at the beach but I'm not.

Last night was very hot and muggy.

I moved to the UK to avoid this kind of weather - thank goodness it doesn't last long.

BeMorePanda · 18/07/2016 12:32

stumblymonkey this stuff totally sorts out thigh rub - no shorts required, a tub lasts all summer and longer (promise)

stumblymonkey · 18/07/2016 12:32

On the upside my office has good air con so I can ignore the weather from 9-6pm!

NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 12:38

I'm with Delatron on this. We have had a miserable summer so far. As soon as the weather picks up all the moaning Minnie's come on here to complain. You get your own way for most of the year, so please let the cold haters enjoy the nice weather without raining on their parade.

Unless you are ill or pregnant just deal with it and put up and shut up.
I am in Florida right now and am loving being able to finally wear my summer clothes.

bluemaid · 18/07/2016 12:57

It might be fun otherwise, but of course I have my period, so no swimming, going to the beach, summer dresses, etc, instead I have to sweat in black pants through the whole thing. And the hayfever gets worse, so I'm sneezing non-stop. I might not actually go out if I don't have to.

dementedma · 18/07/2016 13:00

I left Scotland on Sunday morning: it was cold, wet and windy as usual. Sunday evening I was sitting out in London with a glass of wine at 9pm. Lovely. Today Ds and I have been wearing shorts, strolled along the canal and then back through Regents park which was full of families and young children all out having fun, or sitting under shady trees reading. Seriously...anyone who prefers the shite Scottish weather to this is nuts!

LoreleiGilmoreIsMyBFF · 18/07/2016 13:00

What I want to know is how so many women manage to wear full make-up in the heat! Just been to pick my son up from nursery -literally a five minute walk from my flat - and I've got sweat pouring off me. Have given up on even waterproof mascara as I have panda eyes within the hour. The other mums are wearing foundation, eyeshadow, the works -and not so much as a hint of sheen on their non-damp faces! I wouldn't mind but I struggle to drink even a tenth of the daily recommended amount of water, so where does all this sweat come from?!

Delatron · 18/07/2016 13:04

I am frantically trying to wear all the new summer clothes I bought over the next 2 days before it turns rubbish again.

I understand people hating the heat.., especially if makes you ill or you are pregnant. We do seem to have gone from utter crap jumper temperatures and rain to heatwave with nothing in between. The point is you cold lovers do get your weather most of the year. If it was months of these temperatures you would have my sympathy. My perfect weather is 25/26 degrees and sunny. That really doesn't happen very often. I got told I was exaggerating for saying that for 10 months of the year it was not anything like this. I think I was being conservative! This is the wrong country to be a heat lover!

May09Bump · 18/07/2016 13:08

No, not looking forward to it. A 3 month old to keep cool and considering not sending 7 yr old DS in on the hottest days as school is an oven, and it was ridiculous last yr at same temperature. They sat in their classes with teachers rushing around putting wet paper towels on the kids necks and hand in trays of cold water - felt for children and saintly teachers.

Judydreamsofhorses · 18/07/2016 13:13

I am sitting watching the rain stream down the windows - also in Scotland - and wishing for some nice weather. I really do feel for everyone who suffers in the heat, but gosh, I would love to sit outside in the garden and not have soggy jackets permanently hanging in the boiler cupboard!

middlings · 18/07/2016 13:13

Loathe it. Am Irish but living in London. Neither the children nor I have the genetic make up to be able to cope with this in any way shape or form.

Bring on Thursday when the weather is scheduled to go back to a reasonable temperature.

SunLoather · 18/07/2016 13:15

Agh! I'm somewhere between not giving a shit if I'm moaning, and thinking that it's bloody rude to just tell people to shut up.

Heat does make me ill - that's the problem! The level it is now (25 here) is sadly above my limits; a short walk outside just now made me feel venomously angry for no reason, made me dry-heave and feel nauseous, despite sipping lots of water and taking it slow. That's not an exaggeration, it's a fucking pain in the arse and I wish it didn't happen. I can't figure out a medical reason for it, except perhaps something to do with blood pressure, and lack of sleep never helps of course.

In terms of "the rest of the year", the very fact that it's not normal weather is probably something to do with it causing problems when it does happen.

If anyone has a magic cure which will let sufferers enjoy the sunshine like normal human beings, by all means let us know.

Meanwhile if you enjoy the sunshine, why don't you enjoy it for gods sake (like I would a snowstorm!) and let others express their own feelings. Hmm

Amazed at the person in London not thinking it's that hot, I'm finding it pretty hot today.

I too love the rain and a grey sky, genuinely cheers me up.
