...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!

Agh! Just looked at the weather app and next week looks like hell! On Tuesday, when we have a big event and I'll be running everywhere and driving for hours, it'll be over 30 Confused

Every bloody heatwave I get sick, moody, and then also don't sleep for weeks. Every time! No idea why. I dread them

... Are there any fellow heat-haters about on Mumsnet who fancy a whine? may well just be me

I actually do love snow and proper winter weather! Just not drizzle and cold in summer.

WanderingTrolley1 · 16/07/2016 16:47

I absolutely hate it.

April241 · 16/07/2016 16:49

I'm 25 weeks pregnant with twins and I near cried when I seen the weather! Normally i'm all for it but I get extremely swollen and end up with bad pins and needles in my hands/arms/feet...even if i've got the heating on in the house!

April241 · 16/07/2016 16:51

Rejoice!!! I've just checked the met office and it's supposed to be all cloudy and rain next week at my bit - wahoo! Be gone sausage fingers!

quirkychick · 16/07/2016 16:52

Another one who is crap in the hot weather. I get very uncomfortable and grumpy if I'm too hot (over 25°), it's my body's way of telling me to get out of the sun so I don't burn/get prickly heat/sun stroke.

I can remember 76, actually, I was 5. My main memory is being sent home from school fainting and sick with the heat. I can remember others fainting at school too.

I don't mind sunny weather, just not too hot.

Delatron · 16/07/2016 16:53

As someone said on another thread where we were discussing the shit summer 'I won't be responsible for my actions if we get a few days of nice weather and people start moaning'. I am coming across as rude because I love warm sunny days and it has been utter shit here. Cold wind, lots of rain. Finally we get a mere 2 days of nice weather and everyone starts bloody moaning. I could understand it if it had been hot for a month. We have had a crap summer and you won't even let us warm weather lovers enjoy it! I never moan in winter. Even though it goes on forever. I get some people suffer ill health in the hot weather. Therefore you have been very luck it's been so shit.

Genuinely what would you all do if it was hot for weeks?

HelsinkiLights · 16/07/2016 16:55

It's the humidity that gets people more than the heat does. Am currently in the East Mids and it's hovered around 22 degrees all week, beginning of the week felt really hot as it was so humid (rained in the evenings) but the last 2 days have felt much dryer & cooler.
I remember the summer of 2003 when it hit 38 degrees (went to our first barbecue im March as it was unseasonably warm for that time of year.) Now that was hot hot hot. Did exactly as BabyG suggested but also moved around a bit more slowly & used Clarins Body Lift after showering as it had menthol in it which was very cooling.
Also had fans in every room of the house & kept the curtains closed during the day & opened them & the windows in the evening.
I also remember walking through Marks & Spencers on the way home & hovering round the chilled & freezer section to feel cooler. The bus home was a bit a bit of a mare but if you sit upstairs & make sure all/most of the windows are open then you get a lovely breeze/natural air con on the journey home.
Finally another tip is to open your freezer & rest the temple of your head & inside of your wrist on the iced up bit until you can't bear it anymore. Makes my DH laugh when he sees me & DD in the freezer Smile.

Eh? You chose to click this thread and comment, then continue to comment. Given the title i'd have assumed you knew it wasn't a thread all about loving the weather? No-ones made you come on and read so you've only got yourself to blame really, it's not like there's a group of sweaty, uncomfortable, limp haired people following you about moaning. Hide the thread and rejoice in the weather that you love.

sonlypuppyfat · 16/07/2016 17:02

I have to take medicine for my thyroid and one of the side effects is an inability to tolerate heat, I'm in t shirts in the winter. I hate the summer it makes me feel sick. My sweat literally burns my skin roll on Christmas

hazeyjane · 16/07/2016 17:04

I am not great in hot weather - get sunstroke at the drop of a hat, and just feel dizzy and lightheaded in the heat.

Dd2 gets cracking nosebleeds when its hot, she is lying down at the moment after a huge gusher.

D s also really suffers, can't control his temperature gets all floppy and has passed out in the past.

We are clearly a family of jumper wearing, warm fire loving, windy, cold wet weatherloving wierdos!!

SunLoather · 16/07/2016 17:05

How in god's green earth is people saying they get ill in hot weather "not letting you enjoy it"? Confused go! Enjoy away! Enjoy as hard as you can! Enjoy your socks off.

But in answer to your question, when it's hot for weeks on end, I am ill for weeks on end. Hence ... Not liking hot weather...

Thank you Helsinki, you've reminded me to go fill the ice tray!

Yes I guess some people do summer better than others! Look at the Europeans they on the whole do not look limp haired and sweaty. I do agree we do not know how to cope in the hot weather and most people look a fright. Anyway, again, it's 2 days so hopefully you'll all cope...

HelsinkiLights · 16/07/2016 17:13

My pleasure Sunloather. It was DD (9) who did it first.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 16/07/2016 17:14

I have ultra pale skin and blue eyes. I'm not even genetically disposed towards hot sunny summers. I don't have the olive skin that our heat accustomed European neighbours tend to have.

And they probably wouldn't have to do the school run at 3pm.

Delatron · 16/07/2016 17:17

Again it's 2 days...

VikingMuchToAllOurLiking · 16/07/2016 17:22

Yep, not looking forward to 'climate controlled' office (boiling) and tube home. Last time it was so hot on the tube people just sat with sweat running down their faces, was like hell!

I like the heat when I'm on holiday in a pool. Not so much for working in London!

SunLoather · 16/07/2016 17:26

Ooh, sympathies Viking. It's been ages since I've been in London in a heatwave. I thought they installed air con for the Olympics? Or was that something I made up

Mine! I work in a building that will reach over 100c by 10am during heatwaves. Throw the fact it makes my anxiety attacks worse and it's not something I look forward too.

My heart rate increases greatly in the heat, I have an active job so that raises it further then it's panic attack after panic attack. Lack of sleep as its too sticky excacibates it even further.

I hate having to go out and do 'fun' things in the sun that friends seem to enjoy, no pleasure at all in feeling as though you're going to pass out and can't breathe. Thankfully it's meant to last 3 days then back down to 22c which is bearable!

ThePyjamasOfACat · 16/07/2016 18:42

I'm in the SE too and it's been hot and muggy for weeks. So there must be something wrong with me. And all my family who've been feeling it too. And everyone else I've spoken to about the weather (which is a lot of people, we're British, that's what we talk about).

Looks like my far too commonly needed reminder needs to come out again. People like and dislike different things. THIS IS OK, it's normal. It doesn't mean someone is "wrong" and the other person is "right". People are allowed to talk about things that they don't like. It's not a personal slight on people who DO like that thing.

dementedma · 16/07/2016 21:43

Well it's blowing a gale and spitting rain as usual here in Scotland so can't wait for the heatwave tomorrow as I head to London. Bring it on!

SunLoather · 16/07/2016 22:00

Aw, enjoy demented! Smile

I am deeply jealous though. It's still 25.5 degrees in our furnace new-build flat tonight, and that's after a day with windows/curtains strategically closed etc... So I might have to do a rain dance to beg for mercy. Or sleep under a wet towel. (Either way, a lovely image I'm sure.)

Wine all and hope the sun lovers have a great week, and fellow sufferers don't suffer too much.

SunLoather · 16/07/2016 22:02

Heffalump, that sounds awful. I've had major anxiety issues before and know how horrible it is - hope it's not too bad for you this week. Flowers

One weird thing I have noticed with a huge dose percent of vitamin d every day is that my anxiety's lessened a bit recently. This might be totally unhelpful, but if you've never had your levels checked and you're a fellow heat-hater who probably avoids too much sunlight too, it might be worth it?

SuffolkNWhat · 16/07/2016 22:06

I'm hoping to book out the ICT suite for Tuesday, 30 grumpy, hot 10 year olds is not my idea of fun so we will decamp to the only air conditioned room in the school!

HeffalumpsnWoozles · 17/07/2016 07:36

It might be worth getting my levels checked SunLoather the anxiety seems to run in the family from my mothers side. She didn't suffer but both of my brothers do too, thankfully not to the extent I have in the past. My fathers 3 children from a previous marriage don't suffer at all.

I have 4 attendance disciplinary meetings to hold which are stressful for all involved so I'm already winding myself up mentally about just how awful next week will be. I have beta blockers from my GP that I try to only use for driving (again more stressful in the heat as I have no air con in my car) but will take one before the meetings. I've just bought an insulated water bottle to take in with me so at least chilled water will help calm me & Rescue Remedy lozenges.

Generally my anxiety is much better than it has been with no awful attacks but the heat is my biggest fear, it's ridiculous to write it down....I mean who is scared of the sun?

dementedma · 17/07/2016 07:46

Thanks sunloather. Spent the night in pjs and under duvet and throw, work up to grey skies and rain battering the windows. It's been a dreadful summer here again, the kids are all cooped up inside, the gardens soggy messes, all fetes and galas are a washout or freezing cold. I like some aspects of living in Scotland but the weather is truly depressing.
