Tasmania just now.

There's already a faint aurora visible at Sodankyla before nightfall which bodes well for this evening.

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2015 21:06

Had another Amber Alert this afternoon from Lancaster so might be a good Aurora spotting session tonight. I think Sodankyla was one of those that's been offline and has come back just in time. Just got this picture along with (possibly?) a plane trail.

Porjus now gearing up too and possibly Kiruna.

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 21:09

More pronounced purple on the Sodankyla camera now (and a purple tint at Porjus).

Twitter and FB say clear aurora on N Norfolk coast

pearlgirl · 09/09/2015 21:59

Glad to have found you again - I followed the old thread for a while before I got sidetracked into volcano watching.

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 22:00

Welcome pearlgirl (and FadedRed, who popped in recently).

Gloria - I'm finding the list of links in the OP this year really handy. I don't have to keep all the tabs open like I used to.

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 22:02

On the volcano watching, I had a little look at vedur.is earlier and it's gone awfully quiet around Bardabunga.

pearlgirl · 09/09/2015 22:08

There was an article on mbl.is about new hot springs around the site - which looked fab.am hoping that the next time I get to Iceland we may be able to go that way.

FadedRed · 09/09/2015 22:34

Thank you for the welcome Smile
Would love to see aurora in RL, know it's a gamble anytime, but have you experts here got suggestions for best place to go in Europe, we can usually travel at short notice and budget around ??1K?

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 22:48

I think by the end of the last winter season, Finnish and Swedish Lapland had proved most consistent. I've previously been told by Finns living in Lapland that February/March is a better bet because the weather is colder, so less choppy weather/cloud. I don't know if you could get a short break with one of the ski travel specialists like Inghams. They do several Finnish Lapp resorts. Discover the World do short breaks to Swedish Lapland to visit the Ice Hotel and/or see the lights at Abisko direct flights to Kiruna, I think, but they are ??????. One of our less frequent posters last year said that she'd read the lights were more reliable around the solstices - I'd check on that before booking anything though.

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 22:49

Those question marks should be pound signs.

FadedRed · 09/09/2015 22:58

Thank you for suggestions RomCom. Will have to do some research. We did have our hopes in Norway last January but it didn't stop snowing all the time we were there, which was great for the snow sports, but rubbish for sky watching ( and bliddy cold despite six layers of winter clothing brrrr).
BTW there is a whole thread going about the pound sign question marks isshoos.

RomComPhooey · 09/09/2015 23:02

The other thing Finland has going for it is that it is a Eurozone country and, booze aside, wasn't outrageously expensive. We met some people who'd skiied in Sweden the year before who said it was much cheaper.

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2015 23:05

Yes I waaaaaant Abisko back - that one not working is making aurora watching a bit of a subdued experience atm.
Porjus is looking really pretty now (on tablet so can't post a picture.)

I've always wanted to see the Northern lights. [wistful]

RomComPhooey · 10/09/2015 06:46

Pull up a chair, Crabby. We know it's not quite the real thing, but we've witnessed some lovely aurora over the last year.

PseudoBadger · 10/09/2015 13:30

Whereabouts do you live Crabby?

RomComPhooey · 10/09/2015 21:13

Not sure what's going on in Tasmania, but I thought this one would jazz up the thread and provide a bit of variety.

Yet again, I'm really hacked off that Abisko is not up & running yet.
