Faded - did you take any photos? Weak aurora might show up in a pic but not to the eye

FadedRed · 21/12/2015 18:27

PseudoBadger unfortunately not, my camera battery was flat and DH don't think to. Know better when there is a next time.
Must organise a trip to Northern Norway or Lapland, but so expensive when there's no guarantee and I think I'd devastated if we spent so much money and failed to see them.

FadedRed · 21/12/2015 18:29

Don't think should read didn't think.
So p*ssed off with iPad today, half the stuff I try to post is gibberish, and it keeps turning itself off or reloading halfway through a post and losing everything.

PseudoBadger · 21/12/2015 19:59

I'll just leave this here www.auroraflights.co.uk

RomComPhooey · 21/12/2015 21:00

Badger - I was just looking at this and the itinerary says: The flight will last for about 3 hours. We will head northwards, as directly as possible, usually over Aberdeen and the Shetland Isles to a point in the North Atlantic between the UK and Icelandic airspace. Now, we know from a solid winter of armchair aurora chasing under our belts, that the Kp level doesn't often get high enough for the affected area to reach down below Iceland. I don't know how they can say you have an 80% chance of seeing the lights. Perhaps this is more the case if you are flying from Aberdeen or Edinburgh, where you will get further north, but I'm a bit Confused about this claim if the flights are only 3 hours long and leaving from the southern half of the UK - you wouldn't get a whole lot further north than Scotland, surely?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/12/2015 22:48

My latitude is slightly south of Aberdeen

PseudoBadger · 22/12/2015 06:24

RomCom bear in mind that most of our aurora chasing is based on skycams looking straight up. Therefore we are only seeing (or not!) aurora directly overhead.

Viewing aurora on the horizon or above can be aurora far away - from softservenews.com "An Aurora with an altitude of 68 miles (109 Km) for example could be visible over 700 miles (1,126 km) further south."

So when you're up in a plane over the Faroes for e.g you are basically getting a much better view of far away aurora. I think it's rare that they are actually dancing around the plane!

People on the Aurora Hunters UK FB page have been on the flights and got good results I believe.

RomComPhooey · 22/12/2015 19:58

OK, that does make sense Pseudo. (Hmm. Pondering the flight from our nearest regional airport.)

RomComPhooey · 22/12/2015 20:00

Check out the European aurora cams. With the exception of Helsinki, I think we've got a full house at the mo.

That is the best photo I've ever seen from Svalbard

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2015 20:58

Svalbard is looking rather pretty at the moment. I think there are hints of something brewing at Abisko so think the show might be about to get going there!

A whiff of something particularly special about to start at Abisko, particularly now the cloud cover has cleared.

GloriaSmud · 23/12/2015 06:51

I fell asleep forgot to come back and see what happened at Abisko ~ it put on quite a good performance!

PseudoBadger · 23/12/2015 07:08

Don't forget you can scroll back at Abisko - go back to around pic 80

GloriaSmud · 23/12/2015 07:14

You can indeed Pseudo ~ I often do that to see what's happened overnight. I think Abisko really is one of the best aurora webcams there is so it's worth doing.
