Keeping a small eye on Sunday/Mondays weather

It probably won't come off but I'm keeping a bit of an eye on Sunday and Monday.

Models show remnants of hurricane Bertha coming close to our shores and develop them in different ways. It's hard (for me) to de tangle which bit are Bertha but the results are, either nothing to worry about at at all (most likely scenario) or some potentially wild and wooly weather as two of the models develop some pretty tight gradient lows for this time of year.

GFS takes it across northern Scotland bringing windy weather to the north, ECMWF brings it across southern and central England bringing windy weather to the south. UKMO just produces a slack low which could bring in plenty of rain.

Will update with developments.

I had a tornado go through my garden once. It freaked out the guy who was laying decking at the time!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/08/2014 23:13

The term mini-tornado grates with severe storm aficionados as it is a tornado or it isnt.

I was going to ask you about that. I was reading the BBC story mentioning a mini tornado earlier and the pedant in me was thinking either something is a tornado or it isn't.

You can't leave us dangling like that saintly!

Well we got through a rather blustery night in our tent (Norfolk Coast) lady night. Am yet to get up and look out but the tent is still standing although certainty moved around overnight. I could feel my airbed lifting in the night.
The sun is out this morning so hoping the ground dries up a bit

saintlyjimjams · 11/08/2014 08:16

It was quite a while ago kitten. Hot sunny day so all the windows/backdoor open. I looked out the window and saw a plastic bag spiralling upwards quickly, then all the papers (& there were a lot) flew off my worktops in the kitchen and onto the floor. Went out the front to find neighbours heavy garden sun parasol had lifted up and flown some distance before being dropped.

Chippy doing the decking ran inside looking a bit shocked.

So nothing very exciting & not much to see - although it made the local newspaper as it travelled some distance. It still felt strong though if that makes sense & I can only begin to imagine the power of a 'proper' one - like the infamous floating shelves one.

I'm afraid we had a mini tornado when we lived in America. It was part of a bigger storm and blazed a trail of broken trees, roof damage, downed poles and wires along the road behind ours. You could see the path from the damage. I've puzzled since then what you'd call it as obviously it wasn't a fully fledged tornado, but it was more than a strong gust of wind.

Perihelion · 11/08/2014 12:04

Weather warnings now only for the far North of Scotland.

Selks · 11/08/2014 12:22

Still very wet and windy here in Calderdale, with a flood alert in place. We're all a bit on tenterhooks here re flooding, but so far so good.

WandaFuca · 11/08/2014 19:26

Lots of rain and some thunder - mid-Hampshire area. One crack of thunder sounded like a very loud gunshot, no rumbling, so must have been overhead.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/08/2014 21:23

Been odd here today. Windy, but not unusually so but the weather has been weird.

One minute I'm sitting at the bus stop in blue skies thinking I'm about to get sunburnt, 1/2 an hour later I'm stepping off the bus just as a complete deluge comes down. I got so wet in the 2 minutes it took to get from the bus stop into work that I had to wring out my clothes. They're still drying out now. Less than 5 minutes later and it's blue skies and sunshine again.

Hoping for less rain tomorrow. Or at least better timed rain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2014 18:58

helza - it was a weak tornado, not a mini tornado Wink

saintly, did extend from a cloud?

OYBBK I don't suppose you can reassure me that my next ten days camping holiday in Devon and Cornwall will not be the 16/17 degrees and showery that the BBC website keeps telling me? Hmm brrrrh. REALLY hoping for a local micoclimate effect which pushes the temp up to... a staggering 20 or so!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2014 23:49

I'll get back to you in the morning. Hope you aren't too cold tonight.

S.Herts.
Yesterday morning at 6.30 was 12 degrees but felt much colder - more like September than August.
Today is 13 degrees and I'm putting gloves on for early dog walk just in case.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2014 08:18

Colouringinqueen. Well, on the bright side ermmmm..... You won't get heat stroke.
I'm really sorry, I've done my best to find a positive forecast for you but it's looking cool and unsettled right through.
Things may change as we go through the forecast period, you never know.

Is there something untoward expected for this weekend because, well, wft?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2014 11:26

Hail showers? Not unexpected at this time of year, especially as the sea temps are warmer than usual driving deep convection. However, now you come to mention it, it could be very windy in Scotland overnight on saturday.

OP posts:
ouryve · 14/08/2014 11:32

It does look like we're getting the tail end of that wind.

Must remember to lay my blueberries down again. I've stood the pots back up today, hoping they get a good drink of rainwater, this afternoon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2014 11:34

oh yes, just spotted your gust forecast Blush
Its a low pressure skimming the top of scotland.
