Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

How's Birmingham looking? Storms tonight and all day/evening Saturday?

We wanted a birthday drink in the garden! Not going to happen is it?

Am sooooo Envy

Phoned my mum in London, she couldn't sleep because of the thunder and lightning last night. It's not fair, I was down there a couple of weeks ago hoping for a summer storm.

Been very hot all day and still 32 degrees. No sign of clouding over.

Will probably have to wait until after 7pm to take little furry dog out for her last walkies. Still too stifling for me atm.
Last walk was 7am due to the rain before and intense heat after.

Supposed to have thunder storms again tonight and still be very muggy.
SE.

Doit, I'm afraid its the forecast that I'm giving everyone. Impossible to put any detail on to it. I think that there will be two pulses, one developing overnight and one tomorrow in the afternoon.

According to a post on a weather forum the Met office are saying that 3 hour totals in the worst of it could be 75mm of rain. That's about 3 inches!! Really hope that doesnt come off

You can see storms kicking off in France on this lightning detector page

Not much you can do to prepare for this really. All computers and the tv will be unplugged tonight. Will leave internet router plugged into surge protector though! I've also been picking soft fruit that is just about ripe as I'm not sure what stae it would be in if the storms get going here. Will make sure random windows are closed!

oh yes, we often get powercuts in big storms (or small storms, or sometimes in mild gusts of wind!) but we all have torches by our bedsides and our camping stuff doubles up as a powercut kit. not saying we will need that stuff, but we have needed it in the past.

How does 6am tomorrow morning look like till about 10am? Planning to travel across the country with baby, too risky?

I'm afraid this is a really unpredictable situation. It's already not quite going as forecast with the present storm in France (which is huge!) This doesn't mean the storms won't happen, nor does it mean that they will be less severe necessarily, it means that what will happen tonight and tomorrow is entirely unpredictable. I think its a case of sticking to the thread, the met office and the lightning detector sites and playing it by ear. I'm so sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Heads up those in Kent, the huge storm in France may have your name on it and it is truely awesome in the real sense of the word at present.

Whatever weather knowledge I might have once had, seems to have melted in the heat. Wink

I've been looking at the cloud animation at www.yr.no/satellitt/europa_animasjon.html and I wonder whether the storms are completely separate from the anticlockwise system that's been moving east-ish but north-ish over the Bay of Biscay, or whether they're caught in the leading edge of that system, which will affect their track.

It looks like the storms coming up from France will hit the Sussex area first, but I wonder if they'll then spread out across more of the south because of the rotation of the weather system?

Oh god Kitten really? I just came on to describe the eerie feel outside in my garden overlooking Romney Marsh just now, tidying the kids stuff away. To the north/northwest is sunshine and blue (well, pink now) sky, cornfields shining, tractors working them like buggery etc etc. To the southeast/south its black. Not grey. Black. Very quiet. Very close. Very very eerie. My bedrooms are registering 27° tonight. I want it to rain and break the stifling atmosphere.

What time may we expect the awesome storm please?

x-post with Kitten 20:10 - because I edited my post to not use the term "making landfall", but I think that possibly that could be appropriate from the look of things.

Wanda, you are right they are separate systems and if it goes to prediction there will be less of an easterly motion.

Juniper, RB is correct. Not too long. It has phenomenal rain rates and is very electrically active. Although it may die back a bit over the channel I don't think it will hugely.

How is kent looking tonight? Its so muggy I can barely breathe. Dark sky but bbc says no rain

Just watched the Scottish weather forecast and it says we're in for some thundery rain/downpours......that will make driving to Argyll and over the Rest and Be Thankful ( road that goes over a watershed, steep and prone to landslides caused by heavy rain) interesting. Mind you, thunder sounds amazing when it's rolling round the hills. Grin

Thanks kitten! Smile

Bbc weather seems to suggest that all will be clear Sunday morning? Do you think that still stands?

I'm in surrey and the sky has just got very interesting. It's that orangey glowing odd light, and stripey cloud of darkening grey. Smells stormy. Or that could be next door's BBQ.
