Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

Morning all :)

Round two tonight (ding ding!)

I think the SE will be most prone tonight bust as last night shows, locations aren't an exact science with them coming a little further east than thought.

Then tomorrow anywhere in England, but I think especially in southern and central areas could see some real corkers.

ESTOFEX have a fairly rare level 2 for southern England and it was only the uncertainty that nothing at all might initiate that prevented them from issuing a level 3. To my knowledge we've never had a level 3.

I see that there are storms in East Anglia? Shows that it's a rather volatile situation at present.

Morning OYBBK :)

Can You tell me how it is going to be in Lincolnshire (Woodhall Spa) from tonight till Sunday evening? My ds is off on his first camp with cubs.

And the Le Havre-Portsmouth ferries?

Yay! Toddler has been telling us about the naughty weather and muttering 'flash flash flash!' to herself.

(That's yay for more storms BTW, I love them)

Ferries I think will be fine :) could be exciting if you are in a storm but it wouldn't massively affect the sea state I shouldn't have thought.

Cats, I'd pack waterproofs for sure! Along with shorts. I'd also prime him for not minding storms because I certainly wouldn't rule them out (btw, did you know that Lincolnshire has one of the highest number of tornadoes in the country? Not that you should be expecting that but I thought it was interesting)

All of the TORRO forecasters must be on holiday! Nothing from them.

Hi OYBBK, I'm getting married tomorrow, I'm in Essex, what do you think? It'll be late afternoon. Forecasts are conflicting, BBC predicts rain morning and aft with only lunchtime being dry... Sky weather says dry most of the day! We had a corker of a storm about 4am, back to back lightning.

Storm early this morning (about 2.30) in Worcester, torrential rain and prolonged thunder/lightning. DH and DS slept through it Hmm

Go Ape today so glad we're back to blue skies! Nice and cool atm though.

TORRO have updated their fb page but not their website with a severe thunderstorm watch. Interestingly they are going more a line starting around east Anglia heading north to reach southern Scotland but missing out southern England and Wales. To me this indicates that they think the storms will initiate in the south and become more severe as they move north but I might be misinterpreting them.

Ain't, you are in TORROs watch area. Basically if a storm develops over your area it could be quite dramatic, but if it doesn't then it could stay dry. I'm so sorry, that's such an unhelpful forecast. It's why the met office have such a large warning area because it's just really hard to pin down what will happen in one area. I hope you have a lovely day whatever the weather.

Do you know if its likely to affect Halifax in West Yorkshire please?

Report
OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 12:38

It's possible but I really can't say one way or the other. Thunderstorms are frustrating to forecast. It's a bit like predicting a heath fire really, you can see all of the potential. With a Heath fire you need drought, strong winds, under managed land etc but you still need the trigger to light it and even then you don't know how bad it will be. Same with storms, the atmosphere becomes really unstable but you don't know if they will actually trigger or where. It looks certain I think that they will occur, but exactly where I have no idea.

storms could linger well into Saturday night.

Ingredients are still very much there for some people to get some intense weather tonight and into tomorrow. Risks are flash flooding, large hail, cloud-ground lightning and wind damage.

Fraggle - it could be exciting!! If you do go (and I would because I'm a weather nut, but there you go...), peg down really really well, have things that mustn't get wet in bags to keep dry and evacuate to the car if storms approach, before it gets bad. Of course the storms may miss you Grin
