Dry here in south devon. For once. I am eagerly awaiting some snow.

caz1010 · 09/01/2014 15:55

OYBK, posted last night about thunder, loudest ive ever heard.
local radio now saying it cant have bern thunder as none on the radar for last night.
With your knowledge, is it possible to rule thunder out like this ? and also what else could it have been ?
East Yorkshire area, loads of other people heard it, not just me Wink

digerd · 09/01/2014 16:05

SE.
Sky did clear late morning and has been sunny since with some clouds.
Really want it to cloud over in the night to avoid frost but is almost a clear sky atmHmm

SpottyTeacakes · 09/01/2014 16:30

caz1010

I heard it too, it woke me up Shock

Apparently, a light earthquake hit uk early hours this morning, according to the daily mail.

Geckos48 · 09/01/2014 18:15

I blame fracking

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2014 18:21

the ice warning spotty spotted.
Unsurprising given cold temps and standing water!

caz and cj tell me more about what you heard.

I have been woken by a UK earthquake twice in the past, thugh not the one last night. And yes, it can sound a bit like a long rumble of thunder - though is different too. It seems to build up - we were woken before the shake itself, but the noise. It sounds different to thunder in that is sounds much lower - both in noise and direction - and lasts longer too in my experience. The shaking then happens as it reaches its peak or just after for us. Luckily shortlived in the uk with no real damage - but an unpleasant experience as I think it reminds you of what it must be like for those who have bigger quakes.

cj1983 · 09/01/2014 18:33

It sounded like very loud thunder to me, it seemed to go on for ages too.

Even though i was half asleep, I remember thinking it didn't sound like normal thunder.

I'm in East Yorkshire btw Smile

Hulababy · 09/01/2014 18:36

www.quakes.bgs.ac.uk/earthquakes/recent_uk_events.html

UK earthquakes in last 50 days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2014 19:12

wonder why the bgs doesnt seem to have the birmingham earthquake?

OP posts:
caz1010 · 09/01/2014 19:17

went on for over 20 seconds and just the 1 rumble.
Got louder as it went on. Was raining heavily at the time. Sounded like it was moving. All very strange.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2014 19:18

ok. Was there any evidence of tree damage or other wind damage over night?

OP posts:
Meglet · 09/01/2014 19:45

Hampshire.

Brighter and colder today. But NO rain Smile.

caz1010 · 09/01/2014 21:05

nope, been quite windy during the day but no wind at the time. ie rain was coming straight down, not sideways as other days this winter.
Local news saying now was not thunder, no confirmation of raf activity but possible, also possible asteroid Grin
Sooo loud, sooo long and a one off.

cj1983 · 09/01/2014 21:31

Sorry ignore my dailymail link, i think it is an old story Blush

See, this is why I should just stick to lurking Grin

Not certain what the noise was, it did wake a lot of people up round here though, maybe thunder Confused

alcibiades · 09/01/2014 21:48

I must learn to type faster. I've just refreshed and seen your latest post, cj, but here's what I'd already typed:

The Daily Mail article doesn't have a date; I think it could be referring to this quake: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2008/us2008nyae/.

Even if it wasn't an earthquake, it still sounds scary. I'm quite fascinated by this event, caz and cj, so if there's anything definitive, please post back. (Especially if it was an asteroid Envy.)

Weather report from Winchester: Bright and sunny and mostly dry - that's a novelty Grin. From my nearest online weather station I see we've have 111.5 mm of rain so far this year. As I'm old and there's a limit to what I can grasp in metric, I've had to translate that to English - good grief, that's 4 inches!

cj1983 · 09/01/2014 22:10

alcibiades This is our local news story about it, if you are interested Smile

www.hulldailymail.co.uk/People-baffled-awoken-sound-like-single-explosion/story-20422945-detail/story.html

I promise, this is Today's story Grin

LostInWales · 09/01/2014 23:14

Ooh, I will phone my mum first thing she is local to that area and a light sleeper. She will have lots of gossip.

alcibiades · 09/01/2014 23:22

That's fascinating reading, cj.

I wonder whether it was a meteoroid. A bit of space debris breaking up in the lower atmosphere could well give rise to the sounds that everyone heard. Similar, perhaps, to the event in Russia last year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2014 08:29

Perhaps alci - the time and the weather would limit potential observations.

Or perhaps it was a military aircraft being naughty and going supersonic over land.

So no hugely snowy aspect this week, though I wouldnt rule it out entirely in the usual suspect hilly areas. But next Saturday night GFS has rather a snow fest Confused cold pool of air and a low pressure over us.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2014 08:57

Shock No snow for me ta. I have just returned from the 12 mile round trip into the countryside to drop DS1 off. VV icy, even though there's floods everywhere. Could feel the car sliding. Scary. Sad
