well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

Vito, I think you are going to get a reasonable amount, it's quite a heavy precip band.

Dawn, you are getting showers coming in off the North Sea. I can't see anything in your area on the radar but you never know :)

Look Kitty, I'm not being funny, is it going to snow in SE London, in my particular street (and Maureenmlove's) or NOT?

I need definites now, come on, get your head down and work it out.

Does anybody know what we can expect in Cardiff today? Very mixed reports online.

wildirishrose · 13/01/2013 10:05

Whats the best weather site? I use Met office or Net weather, but they're both useless.

PestoFrostissimos · 13/01/2013 10:11

None down here on the Sussex Downs yet, but still hoping....

I need to know about SE London too. DP came in all happy predicting rain. He insists it wont snow, or wont settle. He is annoying me.

pepperrabbit · 13/01/2013 10:17

We have blue skies, sunshine and yesterdays soggy puddles still. Angry
I want snow!

Dawndonna · 13/01/2013 10:19

Ohyou, definitely off the north sea, I'm almost as far east as it's possible to be in England!
It's started again here.
I'm more worried about tomorrow as I have a long awaited appointment to sort out important medication, and as I'm rural we get snowed in. Whilst stocked up, food wise, I'd like to get to my appointment. Still, we'll see.

Flojobunny · 13/01/2013 10:19

vito is it sticking?
No snow in my part of lancashire yet. It's actually quite sunny, but cold, maybe the cold and bright skies is a good sign for snow?

DamnDeDoubtance · 13/01/2013 10:23

Thanks for the update kitten. Keeping everything crossed for snow not rain.

StairsInTheNight · 13/01/2013 10:41

Met office shows lots of snow north of Watford, and snow in Mid Kent. SE London gets sleet.

WHY!!!

ChameleonCircuit · 13/01/2013 10:53

I want snow! I got some North Face Chilkats for Christmas. They need testing.

Spinaroo · 13/01/2013 10:55

some watery snow has just started in Glasgow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2013 10:59

Grin kbear. If I only I knew.......

Wildirish, the met office do tend to be the most accurate, unfortunately they will also have similar uncertainty about this I'm sure. It's going to be a nowcast day tomorrow.

If you want to have a go yourself then these are the charts I use. To start with look at GFS. The charts to look at are taupunkt (dew point, needs to be zero or below really) niederschlag (precipitation) 850hpa temperatur (upper air temps, the lower they are below -5c the better) 500hpa(looking for the 528 line or below, which we aren't really getting) min/max temp (which will give you a rough prediction of temps at 2m above ground).

Remember with all of that that is just one model run of one model. ECMWF and UKMO models are good to look at. Each run runs a few times a day, GFS is 4.

To look and see how accurate the runs are likely to be then the ensembles are the thing to look at.

Also very helpful are the surface pressure charts

Best way to learn how to interpret these results is to hang around weather forums Wink

Thanks for the updates. Love those spaghetti charts on BBC.

No snow in North Yorkshire, its lovely bright and sunny here. I think its meant to start later on today and tomorrow.

Hope you get to your appointment dawn

mankyscotslass · 13/01/2013 11:10

Still a beautiful sunny crisp and cold morning here, the graupel from overnight was crunchy under foot.

Everybody we met was so cheerful and smiling - it's amazing what a bit of sunshine can do for peoples spirits!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2013 11:12

The sunshine is glorious here too :)

So I am supposed to travel to Kendal tomorrow from Devon. A long drive as it is.... Should I go or will it SNOW?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2013 11:36

I think you are likely to see some snow on your journey. Which route are you planning?

OP posts:
Saltire · 13/01/2013 11:37

Lilleth - I am in North Yorkshire too. No snow where I am either, and I think/hope it might fall but not lie

GirlOutNumbered · 13/01/2013 11:38

M5 to Birmingham then M6 up to Kendal

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2013 11:42

I think you will be alright :) (i got a bit muddled with where Kendal is for a moment and had placed it in Derbyshire - oops!!! Blush )
