well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

An outdoor meeting? In January?? On a Saturday???
That's sheer madness!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 19:14

Wommer, it is a bit bonkers! Not my choice of date, but its something I really ought to attend. Brrrrrr......

Diamonddoris, anything around 0c or below. Have you seen yaktrax with them you don't need to fear walking on ice.

nannynick · 10/01/2013 19:59

Many thanks for the update BadKitten. Sounds like Sunday may be a Funday in some parts.

DiamondDoris · 10/01/2013 20:20

Thanks BaDKitten - I bought some 2 years ago and they're very good - not sure why I'm worrying.

MooncupGoddess · 10/01/2013 20:32

Are you an international woman of mystery, OYBBK?

letseatgrandma · 10/01/2013 20:56

Grrrr-London and Essex look to be getting ice rather than snow; that's not fair!

Someone please come and tell me that we will, in fact, be utterly snowed in and I can have a week off work next week ;) Grin

leesmum · 10/01/2013 21:14

Has anyone gone out and bought extra essentials (wine and choccies) based on the cold spell coming?

Wommer · 10/01/2013 21:18

Oh oh oh oh ooooooh! My heavy rain on say has turned to heavy snow!!! Grin

HintofBream · 10/01/2013 21:19

Got to get to Gatwick for 5.30am on Sunday. Not happy. Going skiing. Ironic really.

MegGriffin · 10/01/2013 22:02

Wommer · 10/01/2013 22:07

Have to add though, just in case you live in Kent too and will be disappointed at the many many feet of snow I am taking notice only of weather forecasts that give me lots of snow.

I'm in west sussex. I do the same and always look here first (thank you kitten) then i look at all the others for the ones with the nicest snow cloud pictures.

Wommer · 10/01/2013 22:27

My current favourite is "theweatheroutlook" - cant link alas on phone - am crossing everything for a snow day on Monday!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 22:30

Next GFS is not so different really, a bit less precip on Sunday, keeps cold til Wednesday.

ECMWF shows an interesting little trough on Monday for the northern half, perhaps a potential snow maker?

UKMO still showing possibility for snow on the back edge of the rain on Saturday. Not much for Sunday apart from maybe nw Scotland.

I'm a bit obsessed by all this snow talk and would burst with excitement if we get some. Dh laughs at my curtain twitching and forecast watching!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 22:38

Bbc roughly confirmed areas for snow sat, West Midlands/central England, down the east coast and possibly over chilterns. Normally disagree with bbc but for once we seem to be in rough accord. Interestingly on Sunday they had snow right down the east coast to the south.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2013 07:10

That may be ok for me, as long as it isn't still there by Monday morning though. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2013 07:36

Quick glance this am! Back to normal this evening :)

Well, GFS this time holds on to the cold air pretty much for the week, with a bit of a warm up Tuesday and Wednesday. Tomorrows snow will depend on how quickly the cold air gets pulled in behind the rain, I fear it may be a little too late to produce much in the way of snow. Mostly because there seems to be much less rain in the latest models for us, really mostly affecting the south for a bit.

On Monday GFS has a band of rain moving south, with a pretty good snow chance for much of England and Wales as it moves south through Monday, Monday night and into Tuesday. I'm not quite so sure about Scotland, other than for hilly areas where I think it will be snow on Monday.

Just had a quick look what the met office are saying. Pretty similar to the GFS really. It confines the snow risk almost entirely to the east coast now, I expect they will remove their snow warnings from the midlands/Wales. They also reckon there will be a snow risk Monday down the eastern coasts, stretching across to the southern midlands and that snow moves south to reach London by night.

Back to the models. ECM keeps the cold air until Friday. UKMO reflects what the met office say.

To summarise, the main risk of snow looks to have shifted from this weekend to Monday/Monday night with snow moving down the country. However there will be some snow showers this weekend with the main risk being for eastern parts. Ice although still as risk doesn't look quite as problematic as it did.

lottie63 · 11/01/2013 08:00

Can someone tell me, is the East coast confined to just the SE coast?

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2013 09:09

Mmmm. I will delay getting the snow shovel out for the time being.
