well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

'Tis a chilly 1C here (Leicester) atm. The metoffice have issued a Level 2 Cold Weather Alert for this weekend for some areas of the country.

Some weather thoughts for the weekend and next week from TheWeatherOutlook here and from Netweather here.

GossipWitch · 10/01/2013 10:24

So now I've got saturday and sunday as a 90% risk :(

BlackAffronted · 10/01/2013 10:43

15% risk here in E Scotland :(

Tortoise · 10/01/2013 10:49

Dropped to 0% chance Saturday and Sunday Sad. 9% chance Monday Sad
Dds will be gutted.

pigsinmud · 10/01/2013 11:01

17% chance on Saturday and 60% on Sunday. However, it says v light, so not expecting much - if any! Seems to be more rain and sleet forecast for me, than snow. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 13:00

Shall we not talk about the latest GFS run??

Well, it basically shows the block collapsing, with only a short lived wintery interlude.

met office warnings reflecting a couple of the areas I've highlighted as a risk for snow, western central England and parts of southern Wales and also the north east coasts. Ice is going to be a horrible factor I'm afraid for many of us.

Will do a proper update around 4pm.

Sad Not ice too.

LaurieBlueBell · 10/01/2013 14:02

So my whole area is yellow. Does that mean it might snow. I do hope so.

yani · 10/01/2013 14:27

OYBBK - Brilliantly helpful as usual. DP driving up from south coast to Midlands this sat, I might ask him to reconsider!

Saltire · 10/01/2013 14:28

I am confused now have no idea if my part of North Yorkshire is getting snow or not Hmm.

LillethTheCat · 10/01/2013 14:41

Oooh judging by those warnings Im either just on the edge in the yellow or just out of it. Looks pretty borderline to me.

Thanks Kitty. You do a marvelous job.

BlackAffronted · 10/01/2013 15:47

Im in the yellow area for snow (East scotland) butthat other snow thingy said 15% chance - which is more likely?

2Old2BeABluePeterPresenter · 10/01/2013 15:52

It's now saying 0% chance for me this weekend :( although I think I'm just in the waning area (east of England).

2Old2BeABluePeterPresenter · 10/01/2013 15:52

warning even!

GlaikitFizzog · 10/01/2013 16:11

Never eat yellow snow! :o

Looks like the edge of the yellow bit cuts through my village! I shall leave ds sledge where it is for now and only get excited when it happens!

snowflakehellokitty · 10/01/2013 16:29

Snow chance for south east please

snowflakehellokitty · 10/01/2013 16:32
Grin
wewereherefirst · 10/01/2013 16:59

Less than 10% chance here now at Midnight Sunday. I am really gutted. Met Office says ice this weekend, which should make the steep incline hill fun to go down!

Wommer · 10/01/2013 17:06

I've got 3 bottles of mulled wine left over from Christmas...
If it snows it won't count as breaking my dry January will it....?
I mean that's practically an emergency!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 17:36

Ok,
latest thoughts
Saturday: looking wet in the south for a good part of the day. In fact utterly revolting because it will be cold (and I have an outdoor meeting - pity me) The back edge of the weather front may turn to snow and also perhaps there may be some for a time over the SW moors and chilterns. There could also be a spell of snow over higher ground in northern england and southern scotland in the evening but I dont expect that to be extensive at the moment.

Sunday: Where it rained saturday Im afraid there will be a nasty ice problem on Sunday. Snow showers coming in off the eastern coast. As is the nature of these showers, some may not get any at all where others may get lots as trains of showers form. Unpredictable.

Thank you Kitten. Hope you'e had an OK day!?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2013 18:15

ermmm..... personally, it was fine Grin tomorrow is looking to be more challenging I think.

OP posts:
DiamondDoris · 10/01/2013 18:21

I'm worried about snow settling and causing ice (mainly on pavements as they aren't gritted). I'm phobic about ice - my question is... at what temperatures does it linger?
