Junior footy match just been cancelled. YAY!

Labradorlover · 11/02/2012 09:23

Still no snow and above freezing temps Sad

PeneloPeePitstop · 11/02/2012 09:31

The pipes in my downstairs loo have frozen Shock

youarekidding · 11/02/2012 09:33

Well it's warmed up to a positively balmy -6° here Grin

Gotta love the sun coming out Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2012 09:34

Ooh yes youare we have sun too.

pigsinmud · 11/02/2012 09:37

No idea if temp in Surrey, but cold enough to freeze the pipes in kitchen and downstairs loo - no heating in either of those places. Met office days it is -9 until 9am and then -6 until midday. Only had frozen pipes once before, about 6 years ago, when we had been away and left heating off for a few days.

lubeybooby · 11/02/2012 10:07

Last time I checked last night it was -7c, that was at 1am ish though so may have got a little colder. Had a roaring log fire all night it was great!

OYBBK Shock at -12c !! wow and -11 in London, cripes.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/02/2012 10:15

schilke - blimey!!!! frozen pipes indoors not good!
Sainsbury's seemed to be suffering rather - those hand scanners werent working properly and random alarms kept going off. Very surreal.
Made it to -4.3C now - positively balmy!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/02/2012 10:17

Met office say Holbeach in Lincolnshire got down to -15.6C

BarnabyMirage · 11/02/2012 10:20

-9 in rural Leics about an hour ago.Our milk has frozen in it's bottles and pushed the top off.I'm summoning up the courage to go and see to the pony and defrost her water trough.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/02/2012 10:55

good luck Mirage - brrrrr.

PigletJohn · 11/02/2012 11:11

I am alarmed to hear about indoor freezing. Are these draughty rooms? The fabric of the house has a high thermal mass so it takes a long time to get cold (or indeed warm again).

Frozen pipes are very liable to burst, not always the first time it happens. If they hold water at mains pressure, you can get a lot of damage.

PeneloPeePitstop · 11/02/2012 11:13

It's a room on the outside of the building, always feels cold in there even if the heating is on.... but it is connected to the house. The pipes run up the inside of the outside wall.

Bit worried about the outside wall.

PigletJohn · 11/02/2012 11:21

maybe invest in a small electric heater with a thermostat, so it will only come on if the temp gets really cold? If you can direct it against the bottom of that outside wall the brickwork will hold some heat.

Older plumbers say you should run pipes up internal walls.

PeneloPeePitstop · 11/02/2012 11:24

Well this house is six years old, PJ. New ish build. First time this has ever happened. Worrying though.

PigletJohn · 11/02/2012 11:33

quite new, so there will be insulation in the cavity walls. I wonder why it is so cold? does it have an external door that might be draughty? or holes in the floor or walls for pipes or drains? If it has its own radiator, could the heat have gone out through the doorway?

If you know a smoker, you could ask them to wave their disgusting fag around all the corners looking for draughts.

MooncupGoddess · 11/02/2012 11:39

Still below freezing in London - the BBC website says -6! I'm sure this is an exaggeration, but I poured hot water on the birdbath to unfreeze an hour ago and it's frozen up again already, even though it's in the sun.

PeneloPeePitstop · 11/02/2012 12:21

I'm only here for another three weeks so I'll not worry, but will report to the HA

GloriaSmud · 11/02/2012 13:10

-8 this morning when I went to de-ice the car. Temp hovering between 0 and -1 on the way home just now.
Netweather's thoughts on today and the week ahead.

(OYBBK, we tried out your recipe for Chocolate Orange Brownies (mentioned earlier in this thread) yesterday. I made double quantity and they've all gone! Don't know whether to be Grin or Blush that my lot have gone through them already!)

pigsinmud · 11/02/2012 14:10

Water now working. Our house is 150 years old. Kitchen not quite so old, but built on at the back. Very cold as there is no heating in there - well just a fan heater I switch on in the morning to take the chill off. Downstairs loo is next to kitchen - used to be outside loo, but at some time was was joined on to rest of house. Again no heating in there...not strictly true as we had fitted an electric bar heater on the wall. I shall leave on low tonight. Dog was in the kitchen and I can report she wasn't frozen although didn't venture out from under her blanket until we'd switched the fan heater on Grin

pepperrabbit · 11/02/2012 14:26

our old downstairs loo was like that - didn't even have a sink... It was so cold in there even on a normal winter I didn't go in there between October and March. Well, maybe I threw a bit of bleach in from a safe distance but that was it!

pigsinmud · 11/02/2012 14:34

Pepperrabbit - just like that! I always use the upstairs loo as much warmer.

youarekidding · 11/02/2012 16:14

Well it's reached 2° here! Very sunny. I stupidly decided to go for a run, but it is really icy air and hurt my lungs and DS was struggling to scooter!
