It seems to me that the UK is the most uninteresting country when it comes to travel.

I’ve lived abroad for a long time and whenever people talk about visiting Europe, they always mention countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany ECT. But I never hear people enthusiastically talking about wanting to visit the UK. I’ve even heard people refer to the UK as the backroom of Europe. Would you agree that the UK is kinda boring ? Even many British people themselves want to leave the UK.

Not at all. There are so many amazing places to visit in the UK. 1,000s of years of history, beautiful countryside, pretty villages, castles, lakes, interesting towns and cities, cathedrals, mountains, miles of stunning coastline, etc. etc.
I live in London and it’s full of tourists.
I thibk you have been away so long you gave forgotten what an amazing country we have.

HebridesHeaven · 29/06/2026 07:53

I'm having one of the most amazing holidays of my life here in the UK. Cycling the outer Hebrides - it's breathtakingly beautiful, and peaceful, and everyone is incredibly friendly. Heaven!!

It seems to me that the UK is the most uninteresting country when it comes to travel.

I travelled Aus and South East Asia and all the people I met that were going to 'do Europe' always had the UK on their list

totootwo · 29/06/2026 08:33

Have you been to any major tourist destinations in the UK? Can't move for tourists.

Idlemummy · 29/06/2026 08:33

Liverpool would like a word

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2026 08:36

One thing I’m sure of, the OP isn’t Bill Bryson in disguise.😂

Doone22 · 29/06/2026 10:48

We don't want to leave because it's boring it's because the country has been ruined by crap government after crap government.
It's a very varied and diverse countryside and really beats the rest of Europe in that way.
Apart from all the culture and history you have moorland, mountain, salt marsh, forest, farmland, downs, all the national parks and a network of public access foot paths and bridleways unparalleled in other countries.

SummerPunch · 29/06/2026 10:51

I absolutely love our countryside and villages. I'm glad your high and mighty friends are staying away though OP as they'd spoil it with their sneery ways

OutOfApricots · 29/06/2026 11:28

OP still hasn't come back then?

Quelle surprise.

exiledfromcornwall · 29/06/2026 11:56

I can't believe what I'm reading. What about the history, the beautiful national parks, the lovely and varied coastline, the beaches of Cornwall and Wales, not to mention Scotland.

Jade9114 · 29/06/2026 12:09

Currently on the most beautiful beach in the uk … London is pretty amazing , the new Forrest, Cotswolds …. Guess it depends what you think of as boring !

OutOfApricots · 29/06/2026 12:26

"I can't believe what I'm reading"

Neither can I.

Saltysweetspicy · 29/06/2026 13:12

@HebridesHeaven wow 😍

You're right that a lot of everyday towns and cities in the UK can feel pretty ordinary, but honestly that's the same anywhere in the world. The average town in France or Italy isn't exactly thrilling either, it's always the highlights that define a country's reputation as a destination.

And the UK genuinely has some incredible highlights that don't get talked about enough. Edinburgh is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe. The Scottish Highlands are absolutely stunning dramatic, wild landscapes that rival anything in Scandinavia or the Alps. Then there's the Lake District, which is breathtaking in its own right, rolling fells, mirror like lakes and a kind of peaceful, timeless beauty that inspired poets like Wordsworth for good reason. Cornwall has coastal scenery that honestly competes with parts of the Mediterranean, and the Cotswolds is the kind of picture perfect countryside that people travel specifically to see.

I think the UK's biggest problem isn't what it actually offers it's perception and weather. Countries like Spain, Portugal and Italy sell sunshine and outdoor living, which is an easy and attractive pitch. The UK is a harder sell on that front, but that doesn't mean there isn't something genuinely special there.

Travellers who actually visit places like the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District or the Jurassic Coast often come back surprised by how beautiful it was compared to what they expected. If anything, the UK might be one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe precisely because expectations are so low going in.

Stompythedinosaur · 29/06/2026 17:33

Nope. Tourism is a big earner for the UK, because of all the people who want to visit.

axolotlfloof · 29/06/2026 18:37

Stonehenge, Bath, York, Edinburgh
The Dale's and Peak District.
It's too busy though. I would only do tourism in Winter.

OutOfApricots · 29/06/2026 19:04

OP appears to have left the country.

outdooryone · 30/06/2026 11:31

IMO the OP is a wind up.

OMGitsnotgood · 30/06/2026 18:09

Are you a lazy journalist by any chance OP?
