It seems to me that the UK is the most uninteresting country when it comes to travel.

I’ve lived abroad for a long time and whenever people talk about visiting Europe, they always mention countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany ECT. But I never hear people enthusiastically talking about wanting to visit the UK. I’ve even heard people refer to the UK as the backroom of Europe. Would you agree that the UK is kinda boring ? Even many British people themselves want to leave the UK.

OP posts:

Are you sure? I live in the Netherlands and so many people visit the UK. Usually they seem to go to London, Scotland or Kent.

SwedishEdith · 27/06/2026 17:38

It's the 8th most visited country in the world, apparently.

LathkillDale · 27/06/2026 17:40

We’ve just been to the West coast of Scotland. No end of camper vans with foreign plates in the lay bys in the evenings!

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 27/06/2026 17:40

All the tourists who flock to Edinburgh, Skye, York and London must be a figment of our imaginations.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/06/2026 17:44

Spent today in Bath meeting up with a friend.
Full of foreign tourists clearly enjoying themselves.
I had a great time too.
You are talking bollocks 😁

Astra53 · 27/06/2026 17:44

Try visiting Windsor any day of the week. Heaving with tourists.

ShanghaiDiva · 27/06/2026 17:49

Dd is at university in Bath. We often go into the centre- it’s empty, completely empty not a foreign tourist to be seen. Those queues of foreign tourists outside Sally Lunn’s are but a figment of my imagination.

Magpiecomplex · 27/06/2026 17:54

Oh, it's you again.

LesSanglotsLonguesDesViolonsDAutomne · 27/06/2026 17:54

Tourism contributes about 2.4% of UK gdp, and heritage tourism brought over £11billion to the economy in 2023, but yeah, you’re probably right that nobody wants to come here.

Honestly, these posts are looking more and more transparent and ridiculous, I don’t know how people are still falling for it.

DD graduated from Bath last year. The have the ceremony in Bath Abbey, when they opened the doors at the end there was a raft of tourists excitedly taken their photos - it was the most amazing day.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 27/06/2026 18:00

No, no one ever visits the UK, ever.
Even the indigenous population never, ever holiday in the UK.
That isn’t me that’s staying at a costal resort next week, no absolutely not me. Must be my double. .

catslovehairties · 27/06/2026 18:02

Yeah, you’re right - all the tourists in the Lake District are a figment of everyone’s imagination 🙄

MigGirl · 27/06/2026 18:03

Wow OP you need to visit Cambridge in the summer, can't move for foreign tourist. The same was true when we visited York last year. I felt like the odd one out being British.

AspiringChatBot · 27/06/2026 18:06

UK has slipped down the rankings in the past 10 years, but it's still the fifth most visited country in Europe for international tourists after France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey. Elimination of VAT refunds in 2021, the end of European FOM after Brexit, the new requirement of passports rather than ID cards for Single Market citizens, sluggish post-COVID economic recovery exacerbated by Brexit-related labour issues, poor value for money combined with severe inflation, Brexit- and COVID-related transit issues and the PR fallout from them, the rise in ETA fees and visa fees for those who do require a visa, and high APD all played a role, somewhat mitigated by the fact that Sterling never really recovered from 2016. London still receives more foreign tourists than any other European city, though.

ThePieceHall · 27/06/2026 18:21

Have you been to Northumberland? Pembrokeshire? My own small and very famous, due to BBC dramas, market town is overrun with Japanese tourists.

VinnieBeige · 27/06/2026 18:21

Can’t we just all nod and smile at the op, so that maybe we can have a break from everyone coming from all over the place to the uk and making it so flipping crowded!

let’s start saying it’s boring here. Try somewhere more interesting: Tunisia, or Morocco. Or any of the Stans. Russia might be fun.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/06/2026 18:28

I work in travel and most of my day is spent with people who want to come here. Hard disagree.

I think the poster knows quite a lot about at least one of those places already.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 27/06/2026 18:29

Well they haven't come to Dorset then have they? Monkey World AND Bovington Tank Museum in one place. Beat that, Sistene Chapel lovers.

Shoola · 27/06/2026 18:33

London is one of the most visited cities in the world. It is constantly heaving with tourists.

Ohhh really? It's DS2's firm choice. I love the Abbey (used to live in a tiny village outside Bath).

I mean ewww, gross, tourists wouldn't want to go there, it's vile and boring and whatnot. 😉

scalt · 27/06/2026 18:56

We have canals, with great history and heritage behind them.

Lauren0902 · 27/06/2026 19:04

Scotland is full of overly excited tourists all year around

lightreflectingonwater · 27/06/2026 19:08

I am guessing I just hallucinated all the tourists in London/Canterbury/Bath/Lulworth/Oxford/Harry Potter Studios/Windsor etc...

Atleastitsnotsunstroke · 27/06/2026 19:09

The only downside with the UK is the weather is never guaranteed. There's so many amazing places - pick any historical city or an AONB. Some places are in need of regeneration but
very much a green and pleasant land.
