It seems to me that the UK is the most uninteresting country when it comes to travel.

I’ve lived abroad for a long time and whenever people talk about visiting Europe, they always mention countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany ECT. But I never hear people enthusiastically talking about wanting to visit the UK. I’ve even heard people refer to the UK as the backroom of Europe. Would you agree that the UK is kinda boring ? Even many British people themselves want to leave the UK.

I’ve just come back in from a few days by the sea and I really must go to the doctor tomorrow as I obviously hallucinated the German couple camped next to me.

AhhhSchtop · 28/06/2026 18:55

On a summers day in London I sometimes selfishly wish this were true. Wall to wall tourists wherever you go.

I think it’s safe to say people are still interested in coming to the back room of Europe!

wasieverreallyhere · 28/06/2026 19:06

Why do you live here if its so bad you dont come to uk for a tan you go for history

Dolphinnoises · 28/06/2026 19:08

The thing is, to get under someone’s skin there has to be a grain of truth in what you’re saying. As we live here (as opposed to, I don’t know, Russia) we see and interact with tourists all the time. Indeed, if you work in London you can’t walk past Big Ben or the London Eye without photobombing someone, even if you’re careful. So claiming no one comes here is so silly it’s not going to stir us up…

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 28/06/2026 19:13

@joseline
So which one of the 4 countries are you referring to ?

DirtyBird · 28/06/2026 19:14

I can't imagine that there is even one country in the world that is boring to visit. Every country has it's beauty, history, architecture, food, culture, etc that are different from other countries and to me that is enough to make a country interesting. Even if I wouldn't choose to live there, i wouldn't find it uninteresting.

Maddy70 · 28/06/2026 19:15

I don't live in the UK but the more time I am away from it the more I appreciate how beautiful it is. The Tudor buildings , the mountains and lakes etc. how sad you can't see the beauty?

RafaFan · 28/06/2026 19:21

Tell that to Cornwall, the Isle of Skye, Edinburgh...can't move for tourists.

LoftyPlumLion · 28/06/2026 19:32

Nope not agree at all. Name me a city better than London?

UK.has amazing places, the lakes, Cornwall, Wales, York, Scotland. Norfolk, Sussex.

Europe has some great places but you clearly have some grass is greener glasses on. Europe has some shit too.

Marmalade71 · 28/06/2026 19:37

Don’t feed it

All the main European cities are wall to wall tourists. London is incredible the diversity is brilliant.

NRTFT and Obviously this is a wind up as the OP plopped & went, but I have started following some 'Americans in the UK' type insta accounts.

They've actually opened my eyes to how lucky I am to live in the UK and many of the small beauties we take for granted - not just national trust and castles, but things like pubs with beer gardens, rights of way across beautiful landscapes, really old places as normal occurances, much better quality food.

Also slightly off topic, but they talk a LOT about the feeling of safety there is in the UK - we don't hold our breath every visit to the play park in case our kid falls over and it costs ££££ for medical attention. And the whole gun thing obviously.

It's made me appreciate my home a lot more. It was it's problems - as does everywhere - but It's beautiful and it's mine.

Chickadeeinme · 28/06/2026 19:49

I live in America and there are an awful lot of people here who want to visit the UK. In fact my neighbour (neighbor...) popped across the road this morning to tell me excitedly that she and her husband had booked a trip to Scotland next year.

Sueandthegoldfish · 28/06/2026 19:51

Well my neck of the woods is currently overloaded with cyclists, walkers and “foreign” cars generally getting on the way so no, somebody seems to find it interesting.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 28/06/2026 19:56

Very silly.post.

Itwillbefinehonestly · 28/06/2026 19:58

The main thing we lack is reliable weather but the history and scenery is excellent.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 28/06/2026 20:01

You are either insane or stupid. I’ve travelled extensively and seen some amazing things. Sea otters holding hands in the Arctic. Dolphins spouting in the Indian Ocean. Orangutans swinging through a rain forest in Borneo. I’ve cried (but not screamed ) in the Sistine Chapel. Admired Golden Buddhas in Thailand. Prayed in a temple in Goa. Flown in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon. Watched wild hares fight in the west of Ireland. Eaten the world’s best steak frites in Belgium.

i’ve done all that and so much more but I still bloody love the UK. I’ ve always lived in London and still can’t quite believe that just going to the gym or shopping takes me past the
Tower of London or St Paul’s - places people save their whole lives to visit. I’m a theatre buff and go to 5/6 shows a month and still don’t see everything.

Tnis weekend I visited family in Edinburgh. The train ride was an absolute delight. Over 4 hours of beautiful scenery. Edinburgh itself is an amazing city full of history, architecture, venues annd amazing food.

When our DC were little and we didn’t want the hassle of flying on holiday we had many, many weeks away in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset
, Somerset and the IoW. There aren’t enough words to describe the number of good things about these areas.

Don’t get me started on the beauty of Wales. The buzz of Liverpool, Leeds or Manchester. The architecture and atmosphere of York, Canterbury or Chester. The alt vibes of Glastonbury, Taunton or Brighton.

The world is an incredible, varied, beautiful place and the UK is all of that and a bag of (delicious salty) chips.

MagicalBagPuss · 28/06/2026 20:02

I presume that you are taking the piss!!!!

ColdWaterDipper · 28/06/2026 20:07

I wish that were the case so where I live would be less touristy, but you are so so wrong. Cornwall is packed with international and British tourists throughout the summer, and I was told only yesterday by a Chinese family I was talking to, that Britain is the most popular European destination for Chinese people and for others Asian countries too. Yes London mainly, but also now more and more they want to visit the Lake District, Scotland, or Cornwall as well.

Of course we know that the uk is very popular with Americans and I see loads of cars from Germany, France, Holland and Italy around every summer.

Iamgettingolderandgrumpier · 28/06/2026 20:10

Happy for foreigners and others to visit other countries and leave UK all to me!!
I have caravanned all over UK (and Europe) and think that there are so many gorgeous places in UK.
The beaches of Cornwall, Anglesey, Welsh coast, Northumberland, Scottish isles etc beat any foreign beach but we just lack the consistent hot weather.
There are many historical towns, cities, castles, places of interest. I’m working my way around all of them.
Then there’s the beautiful countryside and the national parks. The views from the top of Loughrigg, Orrest Head, Latterbarrow in the Lake District can’t be beaten, except probably by the Scottish Glen and Welsh mountains.
Nothing better than a pint, a meal or sandwich on a pretty little pub or a cream tea in a cafe. No country can make fish and chips, Cornish pasties or cakes like UK.
Really don’t get people whose idea of a holiday is an all-inclusive resort spent lying by a pool browning themselves to a crisp but each to his own!

MagicalBagPuss · 28/06/2026 20:14

The UK is definitely NOT boring. How many other countries have the range of scenery and history that we do? Have a look on YouTube of Americans' reactions to being in the UK. We have mountains, hills, moors, beaches, cliffs, castles, cathedrals, very pretty villages, roman, viking and Norman history, wonderful museums and art galleries . . . . Theatres, concerts, festivals . . . .

Shinyhappyapple · 28/06/2026 20:15

Yet when you visit somewhere in the UK that is vaguely touristy it’s full of visitors from other countries. Strange that.

Lararoft · 28/06/2026 20:17

My friends & colleagues who’ve spent a lot of money & effort moving here from abroad actually like living in the UK; during their days off a lot of them travel around the country with their family & friends, sharing lots of pics on social media. Yes, they have found some negatives (eg some think the food is quite plain & it’s cold here) but many do end up taking citizenship and have actually become more patriotic than me lol!

FinallyHere · 28/06/2026 20:31

Yeah. Right

Saharafordessert · 28/06/2026 20:45

Ridiculous post OP….you must be walking around with your eyes closed!
