UK travel

Welcome to our UK travel forum where you can get advice on everything from holidays to exotic destinations, to tips on London travel.

It seems to me that the UK is the most uninteresting country when it comes to travel.

I’ve lived abroad for a long time and whenever people talk about visiting Europe, they always mention countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany ECT. But I never hear people enthusiastically talking about wanting to visit the UK. I’ve even heard people refer to the UK as the backroom of Europe. Would you agree that the UK is kinda boring ? Even many British people themselves want to leave the UK.

I don't know why I'm bothering to reply, but no, I don't agree with you. In fact, since Covid times we have had an ever increasing list of places we'd like to visit in the UK having had fantastic trips to the Lake District, Peak District, York, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Devon, Northumberland, Liverpool and London. Off to Snowdonia this summer.

Even places that you wouldn't pick out as a tourist destination, like Milton Keynes, can have loads on offer. We had a great time in Portsmouth historic dockyards too.

I love many European countries as Holiday destinations, but don't underestimate our own.

The op has created this thread to wind people up. Don't bite

If only all the tourists clogging up the NC500 could get your message...

What is Germany ECT?

GoldenGail · 28/06/2026 21:34

You’ve obviously never been to Scotland. You are talking “pish” x

AnonyMumAuDHD · 28/06/2026 21:53

Rage bait.

Just got back from one of the most beautiful places on earth - Cefalú in Sicily. We adore it there. Stunning.

But so is the town I live in, and London which is 50mins away on the train, and many of the beautiful, historic towns in the UK. Generally don’t need air con, which is definitely a plus.

I love travel, but if I was never allowed to leave the UK again for whatever reason, I’d be fine. There are so many places I want to see again. So many places I’ve not seen yet.

@joseline can go somewhere else and stay there, as most of us appreciate a country that has millennia of history and been integral to European history, that has stunning geography and eclectic gastronomic fare.

Go to London and see the number of tourists. You're talking rubbish

Or at the other extreme, Orkney - the archaeology and wildlife there are fantastic.

And then there’s the gardens - I almost don’t want to waste time going abroad because there’s so many I’ve not visited yet and so many I want to see in different seasons.

SquirrelGG · 28/06/2026 22:41

While I don't have any great desire to visit the UK myself even I think you are being ridiculous.

Mcoco · 28/06/2026 22:49

Walked past some Italian tourists in London on Friday who were excitedly yelling Bella Londra 😳 (beautiful London).

Arran2024 · 28/06/2026 22:50

London is the third most visited city in the world so maybe you are meeting an unusual bunch of people?

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 28/06/2026 22:56

Yeah, we live in the cotswolds and it's ugly, boring and deserted, it's a joy every summer - parking in a wide empty car park and strolling the area unimpeded by every visitor under the sun from the four corners of the planet. SIL lives in Edinburgh and says the same thing

curious79 · 28/06/2026 22:57

42.5 million annual tourists to the UK - it’s the seventh most visited country in the world and easily beats c three you mention above. People love talking down the UK

Todayismyfavouriteday · 29/06/2026 00:27

The UK is my absolute favourite place in the world to visit. History in every corner, always a castle or medieval abbey in sight, wonderful villages and towns to visit. Whoever says it is boring must be very shallow and uninterested in history and art.

VK456 · 29/06/2026 00:33

I’m just trying to remember the last time I saw any tourists in Bath…

KojaksLollipop · 29/06/2026 00:36

I have lived abroad too and never once heard anyone say they think Great Britain would be boring to visit, in fact the absolute opposite. No idea who you’re talking to.

PickAChew · 29/06/2026 00:46

So what do you find interesting in a country, @joseline ?

Lemonapplepear · 29/06/2026 00:53

It's not boring, but it can't offer guaranteed sunshine which is what a lot of people want on holiday.

ANGIEPANGY77 · 29/06/2026 01:48

As an American, my visit to the UK was one of the highlights of my European experiences. I'm eager to return.

ThatJadeLion · 29/06/2026 01:54

No dear, it's just you.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 29/06/2026 01:59

The 50 bajillion tourists that get in my way every time I go into town here in Edinburgh must have got lost on their way to Belgium. There’s another gazillion poor people from sll over the world stuck in the Highlands when they meant to go to the far more interesting Dutch coast.

ScullyD · 29/06/2026 02:04

I live in Scotland and have lived in other parts of Europe. Now and then people are always keen to explore our Highlands and Islands. London? Wales? Come on.

Hundslappadrifa · 29/06/2026 06:30

Maybe they don’t come to your part of the country, but the south west is heaving with European cars at the moment, mostly Dutch.

You’re talking drivel.

LaDamaDeElche · 29/06/2026 07:01

Well London is one of the most visited cities in Europe, so… I live in Spain and I’d say there’s a lot of interest in visiting the uk amongst people here. London is probably the most popular choice, but Scotland seems pretty popular too. I know people who’ve been to York, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester too. It does seem to be more of a short break destination for the Spanish, probably because it costs so much.

Morrisdancer24 · 29/06/2026 07:24

Edinburgh here. You can't get moving here for tourists due to something internationally known as Edinburgh Festival. Heard of it? Only the biggest of it's kind in the world 🤣
Yeah, absolutely nobody comes to my city for anything 🤡

Oh dear. You are wrong. And this is just a thread designed to goad people. There is so much history here. You must realise that.
