is this a truly terrible idea?

Without giving away too many details. DP and my family travelled very far for the wedding and we won't see them in person again for ages.

Having a tiny wedding with just core fam and friends.

Is it a terrible idea to announce our 5/6 week pregnancy?

We really really want to. Know odds of keeping pregnancy are 90-95%.

We would be telling all these people if we had a misscarriage anyway.

I can imagine this moment being truly special and I would like to make a beautiful moment with the assumption that all will be well.

What are your thoughts?

I would keep your wedding and pregnancy separate if I were you.

They might be a little anxious waiting for 12 weeks and god forbid anything happened, you've got all their emotions tied to your wedding as well.

Wishing you best of luck.

Mayflower282 · 18/07/2026 22:53

At 5 weeks it’s more like 15-20% chance miscarriage. I wouldn’t disclose until at least 12 weeks, sometimes grieving in private is necessary before telling people.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/07/2026 22:54

But all the wedding is close familu. And it's very odd to think "I had my wedding dress properly fitted" is a stealth brag

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 18/07/2026 22:56

Enjoy. Just tell them its early. It's lovely u can tell.tehm in person if you won't be seeing them.for a long.time.and if you both want to..it does mean you miss out on the special knowledge between you and your partner ....but that's also fine if you prefer to share..

I wouldn't really mind if the extended family found out. but I would like the opportunity to tell them at 12 weeks

Respectfully, I think you’re a bit too hung up on pregnancy ‘announcements’. So now you want two tiers of announcements?

People will be pleased, of course, but I’d dial way down on my expectations of ‘beautiful moments’. I mean, it’s special to you, of course. (I walked around the day I took the positive test feeling like some kind of force of nature, because I’d never planned to have children, so it was a totally out of character decision.) But the fact remains that for the rest of the world it was a deeply ordinary decision!

Jadeelise · 19/07/2026 16:27

OP if you think this is the right moment and you want to tell them then do it!! People said we were stupid for putting a hefty deposit down on my daughters pram when I was 10 weeks pregnant.. we currently have a very healthy 3.5 month old. Everyone seems to think of all the negatives of pregnancy and nobody ever seems to think about having a happy and successful one. This is your life, don’t let anyone tell you how to live it x

im not that private a person. I wouldn't mind telling any of them if I had a misscarriage. It's actually more, could THEY get excited for it knowing its so early?

When my sister called me at 3 weeks pregnant to tell me I was told to not get excited until 12 weeks. But I am more of a celebrate and get all excited from day 1 type of person

How did she even know at 3 weeks? Surely that’s before your period is even due?

If you’re counting the 5-6 weeks from the start of your last period and you’re only 1-2 weeks past the date you’d expect it, I’d hold off. If you’re actually 5-6 weeks past the date your period was due then you’re actually 9-10 weeks pregnant, which is a less risky time to announce it.

To be fair, either way, I’d rather hold off and enjoy the little secret with my other half for a bit and have the excitement of the wedding as a separate thing from the excitement of the announcement, but you’ll do whatever feels right in the moment I’m sure. Congratulations on both counts!

SleeperTrain16 · 19/07/2026 16:34

Even if it is a very small group, I would think carefully about who you are telling. If there is anyone at the wedding who you suspect has been trying for a while or not in a position to have kids, it could be quite painful for them. In my experience, it's better telling people on more of a one-to-one basis.

But people aren’t saying that to be killjoys, it’s because having a load of baby stuff in your home with no baby can be absolutely heartbreaking. I know it’s only marginally more heartbreaking than having no baby stuff and no baby, but even so, it’s not so much about superstition or being cautious but about a very realistic attitude that sadly not all pregnancies end with a healthy baby.

the guest list is very small, we would jsut have to ask them all to not announce it beyond the room! Closest friends and family only

What's the big deal? If you were announcing at someone else's wedding then it's a hard no. It's your wedding though so tell them if you want to, I'm struggling to understand why you wouldn't? It's entirely normal for people to tell close friends and family early on about pregnancies, not every person in the world has to strictly obey the 12 week rule.

It would have been really helpful for you and everyone responding to this to know it’s your wedding from the start.

It’s your wedding, of course you can announce it.

Ethelspagetti · 19/07/2026 16:54

No don’t do it! My friend used to announce her pregnancy when she was a few weeks gone and lost a couple. It meant messaging everyone to tell them the sad news. Well that wouldn’t have been needed if she’d waited until the 12 week scan. Cue a few people thinking she was silly to have announced it so publicly early. Just wait until your 12 week scan. Congratulations by the way and I hope you have a lovely wedding day.

I think the drama seems a bit narcissistic tbh

Announcing her own pregnancy privately to her own family, after her own wedding, which is one of the relatively few times she’s able to see everyone face to face?

Funny definition of narcissism you’ve got there.

As you’ve stated you are the bride. So you announce it all you like.

if you were not the bride then it would have been a definite no. I personally wouldn’t mind if I was the bride but many many people would. And in that instance I think it’s very poor etiquette. But like you say you are the bride, so crack on, it’s your pregnancy, your wedding and ultimately yours and your husband to be’s day.

enjoy your big special day and hope you have a healthy pregnancy it’s such an exciting time for you both

Maisey1991 · 19/07/2026 16:57

Tell the bride and groom first and see how they respond they might want to announce it for you during speeches!

You have diagnosed her with a mental illness because she wants to announce her pregnancy at her wedding to her family and friends. Get a grip.

The word narcissist is disgustingly over used.

And you think she has a bad personality trait because she wants to announce her pregnancy? Delusional.

babyproblems · 19/07/2026 17:10

I think it’s ok if it’s your wedding.
Is this your first child? Remember there is a reason for people waiting three months. Also bear in mind others around you may have lost babies that you aren’t aware of.
if it’s someone else’s wedding, you absolutely cannot annonce a pregnancy! Xo
