Jade or Jane or are they both boring?

I really like the sound of both these names but have been told they’re boring and plain (plain Jane)
I am aware they were both more common in previous era and that doesn’t bother me.

But is Jade any more boring than another Ava, Isla, Ada etc

OP posts:

I don't generally like one syllable names but Jane is the classier of the two names. Jane is a solid name.

BettyJoanPerske · 24/06/2026 08:46

Jane is classic and beautiful. Jade is not at all to my taste, but that's just me.

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 09:31

Jane is classic and simple. I'd happily use it. I don't like it as a middle name because it was overused in my age group.
Jade's not to my taste and it doesn't sound nice in some accents.

I’ve never met a Jane and I’ve only ever briefly met one Jade.
I like names that aren’t tainted by assholes I’ve known lol I was leaning towards jade but now this thread is sort of swaying me to Jane.

I really like the sound of both names but when I tell people this they react with “but it’s so boring and short” funny because then they go and recommend something like Ava or Ada but Jane is boring because it’s short?

Ava and Ada have two syllables as opposed to one, so they sound longer even though they have fewer letters. That said, I prefer Jane to either of them, although they are both better than Jade IMO.

Jane is a lovely name. Jade I’m not so keen on. If you call your daughter Jane, there won’t be too many of them, either. Go for it, OP.

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 10:59

I don't see any appeal in Ava other than if you write it AVA the mirror image looks the same. Ada is slightly better than Ava but I don't like it.
They're just noises. Ay-vuh and Aid-uh.

I dislike Jayne.

Sinkysocks · 24/06/2026 10:59

Jane is lovely. Jade isn’t one I like, personally.

Jane is classis. Beautiful.

I love the name Jane

Classy and timeless

BettyJoanPerske · 24/06/2026 11:07

I also think that Jane has an edge of cool, largely thanks to Birkin. Jade just makes me think of Jade Goody (RIP, but she is very evocative of a particular time in history. It's not at all a timeless name)

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 11:15

There are lots of good associations with the name Jane but Jade is Jade Jagger or Jade Goody. Neither of those are bad - Jade Jagger has rock star glamour and Jade Goody did a lot to raise awareness of cervical cancer before her untimely death.
Jade is very popular as a baby girl's name in France.

HelenaWilson · 24/06/2026 11:17

I dislike Jayne.

So do I. That y doesn't serve any purpose, it's just parents trying to be different, and it annoys me.

Beachbeachbaby · 24/06/2026 11:18

Jane is a classic! Jane eyre!

jade is mega chavvy

champagnetrial · 24/06/2026 11:19

How about Jean? it's kind of cool I think. (Or maybe I'm just thinking of Harlow, Seberg, Shrimpton etc...)

queenofthewild · 24/06/2026 11:26

The adult Jane’s I know are all sensible, practical people who get things done. The Jades are quite the opposite.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 24/06/2026 11:27

SIL is a Jade. She hates it, feels its a stripper name and makes people automatically think less of her.

Lieben · 24/06/2026 11:33

I love Jade. One of my DD’s best friends is Jade, she’s funny, loyal, clever, ambitious, brave and beautiful.

Jane is ok.

OutOfApricots · 24/06/2026 11:42

Jade has been done way too much over the last couple of decades.

I'd go with Jane.

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 11:50

@OutOfApricots , Baby name explorer. It was popular in the1990s but hasn't been in the top 100 names in the past couple of decades.

It’s bloody boring! I always wanted to be called Claudia.

Not Cordelia? 🙂

An elderly lady neighbour was called Diamond which I thought was fab.

How long ago? Was she born in 1897?

Oh I see why you're asking that. I'm trying to work out her age, her son would've been in his 50s in the early 1980s so it's quite possible she was named after the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. Well I never!

HelenaWilson · 24/06/2026 16:30

I did a search for people called Diamond on Find my Past. There were quite a few born in 1897.

My grandmother was born in 1887. She had Jubilee as one of her names.

Daffodilsinthespring · 24/06/2026 16:46

Jane in lovely. Jade is just too dated to be trendy

CluelessAboutBiology · 24/06/2026 17:44

Speaking as someone whose middle name is Jane, I hate the name Jane. I’m sure every woman of my age and a few years either side have the middle name Jane. It’s dull and unimaginative.

MaggieBsBoat · 24/06/2026 17:46

CurlewKate · 23/06/2026 20:43

Entirely different mood IMHO. One is on the posh side, the other not.

This 💯

Don‘t saddle your baby with Jade as a name. It’ll be extra work to overcome the connotations

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 17:47

@CluelessAboutBiology , Jane if your name ended in -a otherwise Anne.
