Jade or Jane or are they both boring?

I really like the sound of both these names but have been told they’re boring and plain (plain Jane)
I am aware they were both more common in previous era and that doesn’t bother me.

But is Jade any more boring than another Ava, Isla, Ada etc

Jane is pretty and Janey is cool.

I think Jade has had its day for now.

HelenaWilson · 23/06/2026 22:39

It’s bloody boring! I always wanted to be called Claudia.

Not Cordelia? 🙂

An elderly lady neighbour was called Diamond which I thought was fab.

How long ago? Was she born in 1897?

I really like Jane

Me too.
It’s a classic yet underused name. I’ve only had one friend called Jane.

Therunecaster · 23/06/2026 22:42

Ahhh another Jade bashing post. In my opinion Jade is a beautiful name. Suits my kind and lovely daughter.

DustyBins · 23/06/2026 22:46

No to either I'm afraid. Jade is dated and was always a bit chavvy, Jane is so boring and reminds me of Stranger Things.

ThatJadeLion · 23/06/2026 22:48

Not too keen on either. I like Janna, knowing one she is very classy as well

ACR7 · 23/06/2026 22:51

Never realised my name was so hated and chavvy 🫣 I’ve always quite liked it. What an eye opener 😩

Yes tar all people with the same name with the same brush. I’d hate you teaching my child making such silly assumptions about names.

Don’t be so rude and silly. Where did I make any assumptions about all people with that name? I said what my experience was, and why I personally wouldn’t choose that name. I don’t see how you can argue with my experience.

Do you not associate names with the people you know who have that name? I bet you do. Would you really choose to call your baby the name of someone you disliked?

I'm quite prepared to believe there are some perfectly lovely people called Jade. (Perhaps you think you are one of them?) But sadly I haven’t met them.

LittleRobins · 23/06/2026 22:53

Absolutely Jane. It’s one of those names that’s beautiful for a baby, child or adult.

Take no notice. It's a lovely name and you should enjoy it. Some people are just rude, judgemental and unpleasant. Feel sorry for them

Pixilicious1 · 23/06/2026 22:55

Neither. Plain Jane. And jade goody

Ohhhh I love this thread as Im a Jane I never realised that people think it’s a lovely name! I used to think it was boring and wanted to be called something like Natasha but as I’ve got older I like it more. I like its 60s vibe too à la Jane Birkin.

Another Jane here of 1964 vintage. I always wanted to be called something else. Nicole was a favourite at one point when I was 15 or so!

I have never heard the name Janna. Don’t like it so that’s now the law 😆

I’ve rarely had a Jade/Jayde/Jayda in my class who wasn’t a pain in one way or another - I personally took this as you assuming all Jades were pains in the ass, thats how it came across to me.

I don’t personally know any Jade’s (or Janes) but I can’t bear it when people say silly things on this board about certain names being naughty, rude etc

Sorry you hate Jades, hope kids with other names treat you better so you won’t hate them.

As a Jane, I don’t care for Janey but have rarely been called it.

rememberingthem · 23/06/2026 23:05

Jade is chavvy and jane is bland and boring

I don’t "hate Jades". I do find badly behaved children tiresome, and so far nearly all the Jades I’ve taught have fallen into that category. Maybe I’ll get a lovely one in September.

okroger · 23/06/2026 23:05

Jane is an awful!! Like calling a child Sheila or Margaret 😂

okroger · 23/06/2026 23:06

And Jade will always be chavy to me

I’ve never met a Jane and I’ve only ever briefly met one Jade.
I like names that aren’t tainted by assholes I’ve known lol I was leaning towards jade but now this thread is sort of swaying me to Jane.

I really like the sound of both names but when I tell people this they react with “but it’s so boring and short” funny because then they go and recommend something like Ava or Ada but Jane is boring because it’s short?

I have never heard the name Janna.

Jana is a name in some European countries. The one I know pronounces it Yanna.

Denim4ever · 23/06/2026 23:10

Jane - my lovely SIL is Jane but the only name more boring is Mary and the only name more boring and not attractive sounding is Olive.

Jade - due a comeback? Maybe, but a bit like Jasmine and Holly kinda overdone awhile back

XMissPlacedX · 23/06/2026 23:13

Both boring, I know a Jade and she is a right slapper, puts me off the name completely.

labradormam · 23/06/2026 23:23

I agree Jade is quite dated.

I can see both sides of Jane - I do tend to think of it as a bit plain, but I can also see the appeal of the unfussy nature of it. I know a few in their mid to late 50s but don’t know any younger than that.

I work with a Janey. That’s her given name, not a diminutive of Jane and it suits her well. I believe she may have been named after the Aerosmith song, Janey’s got a gun?

Mother in law was Jill, which I always liked, liked the 50s vibe of it and the Jill series of pony books.

Clare is also of a similar vibe?

Walkingnice · 23/06/2026 23:29

None of the Jane’s that I know are plain. They are beautiful, intelligent and classy. Just because the name rhymes with plain, is quite frankly rude and insulting imo.
