Jade or Jane or are they both boring?

I really like the sound of both these names but have been told they’re boring and plain (plain Jane)
I am aware they were both more common in previous era and that doesn’t bother me.

But is Jade any more boring than another Ava, Isla, Ada etc

I like Jane.

jade used to be a derogatory term for a woman.

Davros · 23/06/2026 20:51

Jane is miles better

I quite like Jane. It’s a classic and fairly unusual these days.
Jade is pretty too but a bit 90s whereas Jane won’t date

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/06/2026 20:57

Jane is beautiful, very underused now and sadly so. June is also lovely, but Jade is not to my taste at all.

Morepositivemum · 23/06/2026 20:59

I adore both! Jane a little bit more!!

Hotandpointy · 23/06/2026 21:09

Jane is quite refreshing these days as it’s not quite come back around but is bound to do as it’s a great name.

Jade is more in the Amber or Chantelle category I’m afraid.

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/06/2026 21:10

In 25 years I've taught one Jane (Jayne). It's lovely and simple like Mary, Sarah ...

PermanentTemporary · 23/06/2026 21:13

Jane is glorious.

I don’t mind Jade but it’s very dated and overused now.

Whowhatwerewolf · 23/06/2026 21:19

Depends on whether you prefer Austen or Goody.

I like both.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/06/2026 22:01

Jane is ok. Jade is a chav name.

Ikeameatballs · 23/06/2026 22:04

I really like Jane. I know 3 as work colleagues currently, no one under 40, and my cousin’s wife is a Jane. All lovely people which probably improves my impression of the name.

JanefromLondon1 · 23/06/2026 22:08

It’s bloody boring! I always wanted to be called Claudia.

AllaFieraDellEst · 23/06/2026 22:17

Jade is a low class as a name, sorry.

Jane on the other hand is very nice. Sounds like someone of sound character too, maybe because it makes me think of Lady Jane Grey mostly, who by all accounts was very stoic and composed when she met her tragic and untimely demise. Poor thing.

Janebow · 23/06/2026 22:21

Ohhhh I love this thread as Im a Jane I never realised that people think it’s a lovely name! I used to think it was boring and wanted to be called something like Natasha but as I’ve got older I like it more. I like its 60s vibe too à la Jane Birkin.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 23/06/2026 22:23

I rather like Jane - strong, classic, unfussy.

im not so keen on Jade - I think it’s been a bit overdone…

PancakeCloud · 23/06/2026 22:23

I like both. Jane is a classic. Jade has been more overused I think but it’s very pretty.

thecatdidit · 23/06/2026 22:29

I , too like Jane.
How about Emerald if you're after a gem stone.
An elderly lady neighbour was called Diamond which I thought was fab.

Oh yes, I forgot Jane Birkin too! The best Jane. They did also name a Hermès bag after her so can't say fairer than that...

AllStarBySmashMouth · 23/06/2026 22:31

I much prefer Jade.

Kneenightmare · 23/06/2026 22:32

I’m obviously bucking the trend by knowing a lovely Jade! I love Jane Austen but think the name is too dated now. Jane’s are my age (50s) not babies.

Specialneedsnightmare · 23/06/2026 22:32

Jane is a really nice name and not often heard now.

Jade makes me think of Jade Goody.

Tooobvious · 23/06/2026 20:15

I like Jane. Not very common nowadays.

Sorry but as a teacher I’ve rarely had a Jade/Jayde/Jayda in my class who wasn’t a pain in one way or another, so personally I wouldn’t choose that.

Edited

Yes tar all people with the same name with the same brush. I’d hate you teaching my child making such silly assumptions about names.

Sandysandybeaches · 23/06/2026 22:36

Jane! Elegant, timeless and no baggage.
