You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

We are still waiting advice on chairs and masks but keep the windows open. You don’t have to upload LFT results during the holidays.Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask.

Yeah

TheHoneyBadger · 18/07/2021 08:51

Research project wise I'd probably focus on restorative behaviour policies as that's allegedly what we do where I am but in reality the time and structures aren't really 'there' to make it meaningful or consistent and it's more down to individual teachers how they interpret and how/if they bother to do restoratives with kids. I'd like to have some evidence based knowledge about if/how it works, what it's limits are, which groups of kids it does/doesn't have real benefits with etc.

HSHorror · 18/07/2021 08:53

I think kids maybe should be allowed to do this once any isolation runs into time out of school.

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/07/2021 08:55

And also (thinking about it) has anyone come across anyone else who’s in that study, or seen anyone reporting as being in it, apart from the similar schools study?

Hmm
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/07/2021 08:58

I haven’t Jan.

Also, didn’t the study only allow kids to go to school and presumably adults to go to work. I didn’t think it was a complete free for all.

DreamingofBrie · 18/07/2021 09:05

@noblegiraffe

Better?
Thank you Blush.

horror there is a “pilot”: www.independent.co.uk/news/education/covid-test-quarantine-selfisolation-school-england-b1823194.html

Rafa yes. Hence the BBC (who’ve now reported re Boris and Rishi) stating they’ll only carry out essential government business....

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/07/2021 09:07

Apparently 40,000 were originally supposed to be recruited to the study.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/07/2021 09:15

Presumably doing as much from home as they can...

This is a couple of days old now, but have we discussed this paper on effects of mask wearing in kids being retracted yet? Looks like you might only be able to draw a conclusion that they have a negative affect on CO2 levels if you ignore all the data you found that shows they don’t.

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/07/2021 09:20

Interesting thread on the “pilot” and it’s being discussed on R4 atm. It’s not going down well. But does definitely exist.

noblegiraffe · 18/07/2021 09:22

I've tried to find info on when the pilot finishes and it due to report, but without success. The schools one was supposed to be done in time for implementation in September.

Watching Andrew Marr. It was always obvious that Javid and Johnson wouldn't self-isolate like the rest of us, but still makes me angry - always one rule for them and one rule for the plebs. Combined with Barnard Castle, Gove, Hancock etc., seems such obvious contempt for the population.

Honey, I thought of doing an MEd straight after my PGCE but never got around to it, I changed school 3 times in 3 years and just ran out of momentum. Nowadays when I think about doing an extra qualification, I think about doing a counselling qualification as that would tie in well with the job (and also some volunteering work that I do). I think part-time is a real barrier to progression - the people with leadership positions in my school are generally FT, or 0.8 (above). Those who are not got their senior positions before they went PT.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/07/2021 09:29

I suspect there will be quite a few people who are supposed to be self isolating who will be out and about maskless tomorrow.

The government really have nailed undermining their own policies haven’t they?

TheHoneyBadger · 18/07/2021 09:37

Yes I think realistically any progress would have to come from a change of school. I have no way of increasing my hours currently as our department is technically overstaffed. I keep hoping we'll start doing GCSE Sociology because that would be perfect and could up my hours but can't see it happening.

I already have a Post Grad Diploma in Counselling that I did when I took an early career break just before having ds. I doubt anyone at school even knows. It's strange the way they claim we are their biggest resource but don't seem to know anything about our professional and educational backgrounds.

Piggywaspushed · 18/07/2021 09:46

I am so furious this morning as a parent of a 17 year old . Missing out on covid jab and no flu jab. Fucking furious. Sorry jan.

DreamingofBrie · 18/07/2021 09:48

Seems similar here - we had to fill in a survey this year, listing our qualifications! I'm guessing it was in anticipation of an inspection in the future.

Piggywaspushed · 18/07/2021 09:48

Please do look at the report noble. It's full of very funky maths stuff!

Interestingly, from their list of GCSE subjects and what they do, they omit media studies. I'd love to know that, given the horrifically snobbish thread running on the coronavirus board.

noblegiraffe · 18/07/2021 09:51

Oh Brie, my suspicion would be that staff shortages mean teachers teaching outside their specialism and they want to know who has A-level French.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/07/2021 10:01

I have A Level French, and have taught it at ks3 many moons ago. I also have half a degree in computer science, and am teaching some year 7 computing next year, which should be fun. Last time we had to list our qualifications it was just before they announced we needed redundancies. They needed to know who was essential and who could volunteer for redundancy. We lost 7 teachers that year and 4 more the year after. We're losing one to redundancy this year too, which was a very sad one as they literally sat 4 people down and said "one of you needs to go", without any indications beforehand that it was on the cards.

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/07/2021 10:04

Broom cupboard needs ventilating....

Saw an Independent article on the schools pilot which said it was due to finish at the “end of this month” noble, but that was written in June and updated in July, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 18/07/2021 10:10

There was definitely a random person pilot thing on LFTs instead of isolation. Offered when TandT contacted you. Lots of NHS staff did it.

DanglingMod · 18/07/2021 10:41

Yes, that's definitely the reason for the qualifications survey in our Trust.

How about you try and do the right thing the first time rather than waiting to see if you can get away with it or not …
