You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are not staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

That NEU advice was issued before this evening’s DfE guidance for reopening schools was published.

I expect them to come up with a plan of what to do now.

FrippEnos · 11/05/2020 20:50

Hopefully they will.

Cyberworrier · 11/05/2020 20:52

Ah ok, thanks @Appuskidu. I’m getting boggle eyed trying to find answers or certainty that doesn’t exist...

pfrench · 11/05/2020 20:54

I fucking hate this government. I've had the rage all day about it.

There's going to be another spike of deaths JUST as we're going back to school. And either we'll have to close again, with all the stress that goes with it, or we'll have to keep on going (you know it'll be this one), which is going to mean loads of kids off school, incredibly bad anxiety based behaviour, and teachers going off with mental health issues.

And at that point it will be too late to hand in notice for September too.

Saying there won't be fines - does that mean we'll be expected to provide online learning for those children who are at home?

Fingers cross my school just says if you're in N, R, 1 or 6 and don't come to school, then there is no learning provided.

I imagine I'll be doing home learning for years 3 and 4, because I've done loads of it from home now, and am the only one in my school doing videos and things. I'll go to the school building to do it if I can, but how do we make children engage?

Literally need to scream into a void. I already ran 3 painful miles against the wind!! Didn't reduce the rage.

reefedsail · 11/05/2020 21:04

It says somewhere that we will 'endeavour' to continue to support learning at home.

pinkrocker · 11/05/2020 21:05

@Piggywaspushed I found it mentioned, middle schools are to be the same as everyone else and have Y6 back in. For what reason, certainly not transition.

So no kids will come in. Correction, no middle class kids will come in.

I think our school will just say 'follow Oak or BBC Bitesize if you're not in'.

oddsbodkins · 11/05/2020 21:11

Latest union advice - this one from Unison following the statement from the NEU:

Colleagues, tomorrow we will work with other education unions to agree a joint position on returning to schools in response to tonight's additional guidance from the DfE (England). Until then we advise members not to engage with planning for a June 1st return. Statement tomorrow.

Should make our virtual staff meeting tomorrow erm, 'interesting'.

SallyLovesCheese · 11/05/2020 21:12

Thanks, Piggy. I'm going in as usual tomorrow which always makes me feel a bit wobbly and that's only with 6 kids in: the thought of potentially having 180 kids in is scary.

My only consolation is that maybe lots of parents will keep their children off.

BelleSausage · 11/05/2020 21:12

I am hoping this is so piss poor because the government is betting that idiots will be out and about on buses and sunbathing all this week and that R will be well over 1 by June 1.

Of course, they’d have to be testing people to know that.

pooiepooie25 · 11/05/2020 21:16

Has anyone heard from NASUWT yet? I am the school rep but haven't received anything. I have emailed them but was wondering if I had missed something? Thanks

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 21:19

Nope!

pooiepooie25 · 11/05/2020 21:21

I’ve been pondering whether to join a union again (part time and mostly skint and didn’t seem like they do anything anymore). If I do it will be NEU for actually communicating with their members and seeming to have their backs.

I'm NEU and I've actually been thinking about NOT being in a union for the first time in my teaching career, @TheHoneyBadger. If the NEU don't do something about this situation then they can whistle for my fucking £28 a month, or whatever it is from now on. It's expensive to be a member, and they don't actually provide anything as far as I'm concerned. It's all very well the unions posting demands, questions and concerns - but if we have to go back into the schools like this and the unions don't take strong action then there's no point, in my opinion, in being part of them any longer.

I do honestly think they are all talk, but I live in (faint) hope still.

pfrench · 11/05/2020 21:37

Letters will have to go out saying that we can't guarantee to keep your child safe. Only parents who HAVE to go back to work will send their kids in. Think of those who were in during the last 3 days of school before closure. It'll be those kids.

I was asked last week if I was available for after half term. I don't mind going back, I trust my head to do the right thing.

TheHoneyBadger · 11/05/2020 21:40

Blimey that’s expensive for a part timer. Fingers crossed they act.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 11/05/2020 21:41

Can you imagine the uproar from parents when the class of 15 then has to self isolate for 14 days because someone ( probably the teacher ) has tested positive for covid! There will be a teacher bashing thread then I'm sure!

Cyberworrier · 11/05/2020 21:47

I just joined NEU and have only been charged a few quid... but I am fairly recently qualified and very part time if that makes a difference? It was actually suggested by SLT at my school that those not in unions should consider doing so. I’ll of course stop when term finishes and leave teaching for time being.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/05/2020 21:49

I have had to use my union before and I would urge joining one tbh.

The neu statement hasn't gone down well with slt groups (I'm in on on fb) as they feel it's very divisive.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/05/2020 21:50

I'd been over paying mine without realising being part time. Worth checking.

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 21:53

A couple of familiar faces have arrived on the teachers' pay thread so either ignore or just go and answer OP's question. Do not engage with the Clav!
