You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are not staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

Can you imagine the uproar from parents when the class of 15 then has to self isolate for 14 days because someone ( probably the teacher ) has tested positive for covid!

But will anyone who is not family of key worker actually get a test? In theory if a teacher gets sick we can find out for sure, as we are priority to be tested.
If a pupil, or someone in their family, is unwell, will they get tested?
In reality, it will be like it was before lockdown - the only way you get a confirmation of diagnosis, and have the option to self isolate, is when someone is so sick that they’re hospitalised.
And then there’s the high rate of false negatives to contend with.

AppleKatie · 11/05/2020 21:56

The NEU have been anything but toothless in my experience over the last few years. I really would urge people to join/stay with them- it helps if you have a good school rep (we have an amazing one)- but they have seriously helped us collectively when we needed it.

Useruseruserusee · 11/05/2020 22:03

I’m NEU and SLT. So far we have taken the approach of not planning until we have the guidance. Interested to see what the union statement will say tomorrow.

pfrench · 11/05/2020 22:08

Yes, we had our SLT meeting postponed today - no point. We'll wait and see what we get tomorrow. Our NEU rep is SLT too.

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 22:08

wife it is in the guidelines : the whole class must self isolate for 14 days. Only get tested if get symptoms. even though children are often asymptomatic

phlebasconsidered · 11/05/2020 22:10

I am naswt but that's only because they're the biggest presence in my area. They did fuck all about our forced academisation and they basically just turn up. And stand there. If the neu or any other union were there in my local area I would leap upon them. I've just had an email - that's it.

AngelaScandal · 11/05/2020 22:25

💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Ex teacher here. Just dropping in To say I think you’re all bloody amazing. Hard to ignore the thread after thread of teacher hatred on the site lately.

TheHoneyBadger · 11/05/2020 22:27

I think I have to sign off for the night for the sake of my sanity. Would urge people to follow neu advice. Unions only have teeth if teachers will act collectively. If teachers roll over there’s nothing unions can do.

I am awaiting advice from my union is a perfectly civil response to can you work in June.

Mistressiggi · 11/05/2020 22:27

It's insane to work in education and not be in a union. Imo.

Mistressiggi · 11/05/2020 22:32

One false accusation and your career can be down the swanny.
Never mind it being nice to have collective power to campaign for better pay and conditions.

Asuitablecat · 11/05/2020 22:32

The guidelines seem.to.imply yr10/12 in straight after half term. Which wasn't what Boris said.

Mistressiggi · 11/05/2020 22:34

So will they be split into two, so following a rearranged timetable? (Say you taught A level French, would you teach it to half the class and then the same to the other half?)

CallmeAngelina · 11/05/2020 22:43

Has anyone already posted this?

CallmeAngelina · 11/05/2020 22:44

It's the gov.uk recommendations for implementing protective measures in education.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/05/2020 22:46

@Asuitablecat that is not my reading of the guidance re Y10/12. It refers to face to face contact to support their continued remote home learning.

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2020 23:14

Yes callme, several pages ago Grin !

WifeofDarth · 12/05/2020 00:07

Thanks Piggy. Still lots of grey area there - and an implicit reliance on a thorough accurate testing system.

Piggywaspushed · 12/05/2020 06:18

There is new confusion this morning about years 10 and 12. Boris pretty much hinted this 'face to face contact' would be the last thing. If you look at the guidelines, it implies that this is from June 1st.

No one knows anything!

Again!

echt · 12/05/2020 06:44

In Victoria a staggered return for schools was announced today: prep, 1, 2, 11 and 12 on the 26th May, everyone else 9th June. Lots of hand sanitiser promised.

WFH for 70+, 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, 65+with chronic health conditions, anyone immune-appressed. I know pregnant staff and those who live with those shielding are very concerned as they are not part of this range of exemptions.

Piggywaspushed · 12/05/2020 06:53

Same here echt it seems . It looks like there will be a hell of a lot of clothes washing going on.

Asuitablecat · 12/05/2020 07:00

Uniforms are going to have to go, surely. I certainly don't have 1 uniform for every day of the week. Not that my kids are going to be back until Drakeford says.

Although i may well be now the doe has published. Our head has told us not to panic yet cos there is still too much confusion.

reefedsail · 12/05/2020 07:06

It will only be classes of 15 for 3 weeks. After that it will be full classes because nobody will have enough classrooms to continue to split.

If each group of 15 has to have the same adults all day and adults cannot be shared between groups, there will have to be two adults per group (not one as suggested by the guidance). Otherwise the allocated adult cannot go to the toilet, never mind take a break.

EducatingArti · 12/05/2020 07:41

Where are all the teachers going to come from to teach all these half classes once all years are in ( in primary) Surely most primaries don't have an additional TA for each class?

AppleKatie · 12/05/2020 07:42

Even if you got the staff (by which I mean put upon the TAs and 1:1s and reduced others support)... I’m quite interested to know where you are going to get double the number of classrooms 😝
