William on Graham Norton

Poor Harry. As if his week hasn’t been bad enough he has now had to watch his brother appearing on the best talk show , holding his own, looking comfortable and relaxed, keeping up with the banter, making half decent jokes, telling stories against himself with humour.

Makes Harry’s attempt at tv chatting seem even more uncomfortable.

“Call me William” versus “I am a prince.”

I don't want a republic, but let's consider those countries that are and elect a head of state. President Trump, the future possible President Le Pen, as examples.

There are good presidents and bad presidents, just as there are good monarchs and bad monarchs. But at least in a republic the people get to choose.

He's not 'a sport', he's getting in there, gaining public support so his positioned is secured! His father is old and unwell and he needs to insinuate himself now before the debate about the worth of the monarchy begins.

Insinuate?

If William had bombed last night would that mean anything?

There is no way he would have been allowed to, the whole thing was orchestrated and heavily edited to make him look good.

Yeah absolutely. My comment was more about the suggestion on here that because wills didn’t shit his pants live on national television it means his brother is a terrible person or something?

Are you sure that he has ended his affair with Rose?

Do you have any evidence for your unpleasant gossip? Answer: no, because there isn’t any. They are real people, you know - why be so nasty?

leperol · Yesterday 09:27

It was great PR, and he came across well. I imagine any fluffing or faux pas were edited right out and the good bits emphasised, and such is good PR!

I am not in favour of the monarchy though. I always think, hmmm, s/he doesn't have to get up at six am, sort the kids out, drop them to nursery, be stuck in traffic to get to a job that is not all that satisfying, and do the reverse in the evening + dinner, school uniforms, homework, housework and bed.

I think it's the lack of a day job of some sort that kind of bothers me. It toughens you up for the real world of interraction, stress, commuting, organising, and budgeting. And empathising with the peasants, it has to be said!

It was very strange that story. Massive outside the UK, but not much in the domestic press.

Presumably because they knew they'd have been sued by Rose and her husband for printing lies?

Propaganda spread by the Sussex team.

Kirschcherries · Yesterday 09:31

What I liked was how he promoted Earthshot by talking about what applicants have done.

I know a lot of people dismiss Williams work on Earthshot, Homelessness and the Duchy as him not working. I believe he spends a lot more time on these that is obvious.

There are demands to modernise the monarchy - doing longer more in-depth projects is different to HMTLQ but does expand on Duke of Edinburgh and the Kings (Princes) Trust. Using the media/social media to be visible is another change.

I think this was a good interview that showed Ws personality and promoted one of his projects.

Passingthroughagain · Yesterday 09:34

I thought he was fantastic. Even though they'd prepped which stories he would relate beforehand – which GN does with ALL his guests, you can tell – he still showed how funny and down to earth he was with his one-liners. Even my OH, who never takes notice of any of the Royals, remarked how great he was coming across and that he's the kind of person we want to be King, because he's about as normal as the Royals can be. Reckon it's the Middleton effect.

OneFunBrickNewt · Yesterday 08:26

Yes, and he was solely invited based not on any achievement but on which battles his ancestors won over a thousand years ago. It was good PR and he came across relatively well; still doesn't change how wrong it is that he was driven home in taxpayer funded police motorcade (sure those officers could be better put to use doing other things) and slept in a taxpayer funded palace and had his bed made by.....taxpayer funded servants.

You think elected presidents pay for all those things themselves? How naive.

Trump is estimated by finance experts to have made £1.7 billion during his first year back in office…

in which case it’s a good job Trump’s term is coming to an end and the public get to choose someone else as head of state.

Vaxtable · Yesterday 09:39

He was great, relaxed, having fun. But that also comes across when he’s out and about on visits

EmpressSisi · Yesterday 09:42

Oh balls, I usually watch Graham Norton but I was out at the cinema. Thank God for catch up tv 🤣

In what sense is the heir apparent’s position not secure? The clue is in the name.

Exactly! I thought William came across beautifully, and is an absolute star. I'm just ignoring the silly snarky remarks. 'Trying to secure his position' (as the next Monarch) is a bizarre thing to say, he already has the job lined up dude! 😆

I'm not sure I like the putting down of Harry to boost William though. As has been said, they are 2 different people. The people who have more than one child, are they all exactly the same? Like Stepford Wives. No.

Also absolutely love Robert Irwin. I follow him online, and also Bindi and Terri, and Their Australia Zoo in general. Wonderful family.

Ellaelle · Yesterday 09:47

NautilusLionfish · Yesterday 05:36

Exactly. And surely one lesson of the last decade or so is that, esp for men, wait 60 years before you worship them. Esp rich or powerful men. There may be dirty horrific secrets someone is keeping for them that will only come out when their power wanes. For now both brothers are supporting some good causes.

Cheering this family estrangement is weird

Thank goodness there are people who think like me! Because I'm trying ti figure out why it should be "poor Harry" Bizarre!

These costs will still apply when we return to being a republic, but at least we’ll have a choice in the individual concerned.

Yes, you're right about the choice.
I'd argue the cost would be massively reduced. After all, the state wouldn't- either directly or indirectly- fund the president's uncle's legal costs or housing his gran's cousins in a palace.

Purplesproutingradiator · Yesterday 09:48

William came across perfectly fine. But it was a total love-in, it's not hard to come across well when the whole interview is being set up that way.

Harry's had a really rough time (at least partly of his own making tbf). But he certainly could have done the same job of being charming on a sofa (probably better - Harry's always been very funny) if the cards had fallen differently.

Swmk · Yesterday 09:50

Freysimo · Yesterday 07:57

Also, would Catherine's sister Pippa have called her daughter Rose if the rumours were true?

Very true.

Possibly, but in practice it would be security not just for the current president, but also all previous surviving ones. Of course we could have a better informed debate if we were allowed to see the true costs of running the monarchy. The costs of running the presidencies in, for example, France and the US are vastly more transparent that the UK monarchy.

Genevieva · Yesterday 09:54

I tend to think that other people’s successes are only to be looked on favourably. It’s not a competition. I didn’t see Harry’s, but if it didn’t go well, he should watch and learn. Or stick to his professed desire to live privately. I’d hate to be in the public eye. It’s genuinely my idea of hell. I think William does an excellent job with his rather strange role. He’s treats it like a serious career, not an entitlement.

And then we can have a president, like America. Because that’s going really well for them.

As I said, there are good and bad presidents just as there are good and bad monarchs. But presidents have a term and the people get to choose their replacement.

I’m not even a Royalist but I love William and Kate, a much more slimmed down monarchy is what we need but happy with these 2 at the helm.
