"Viewing a photo of the late Princess of Wales, Harry said, "I find myself looking at her and wondering, what is she thinking about what I am doing right now?"

I think we can safely say she'd be horrified Harry. At the way you're treating your father and brother, at how you behaved to HMTLQ and at your relentless whining.

Diana was a monarchist, she'd have supported The Crown and she'd have been bollocking you, mate.

I was randomly walking through Dunelm and thought exactly this about Diana and the Monarchy.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · Yesterday 20:08

Was he actually expected to make a career of the army? royal males usually did their stint in the services before taking up royal duties.

Grief is universal. Few of us are paid to discuss ours.

Err no. Harry went through Sandhurst. The officer’s training college in case you are not aware. Officers are expected to move up the ranks within a given time frame and have to pass exams to do so beyond the rank of Captain. So not academic snobbery, but the actual situation for an officer like Harry

You are right that officers absolutely have to hit fixed timeframes and complete mandatory progression requirements to stay on track.

But this is exactly where Lunde's argument completely falls apart. Lunde is claiming that Harry's entry test scores meant he was 'slow-tracked,' that it took him a 'sedate 5 years' to make Captain, and that he was capped there. Virtually every single part of that claim is a total fabrication:

For a non-graduate entering Sandhurst, the progression timeline to Captain is strictly fixed by the British Army. It takes exactly 2 years to make Lieutenant and a further 3 years to make Captain. That 5-year total is the exact regulatory timeline for his track. You physically cannot be 'slow-tracked' on fixed, time-served promotions. He hit his Captaincy exactly on time.

The 4/10 entry score claim is pure spin: The Sandhurst selection board is a holistic pass/fail gateway. He passed. Lunde trying to dig up a leaked 2005 tabloid rumor about a single 4/10 raw IQ sub-test to claim he wasn't considered a 'good candidate for leadership' is completely desperate. If you don't show leadership potential, you fail the board entirely.

As anyone with basic military knowledge knows, moving up to Major permanently takes you out of the cockpit and hands you an administrative desk job. Insiders explicitly noted at the time that 'Harry joined the Army to lead men in battle, not to sit behind a desk pushing papers'. He left active service precisely because he wanted to remain an active pilot, not be desk bound.

So yes, Smilesay, there are rigid structures and timeframes and Harry met them exactly on schedule. Lunde is just trying to mask a total ignorance of standard military timelines and academic snobbery with those made up test scores as factual knowledge. It’s embarrassing.

I came across this randomly! Found it very funny. Might take a while to be approved.

Oh, look, more textbook academic snobbery. Judging a front-line soldier’s service by how well they pass paper exams or how fast they climb a corporate ladder is peak elitism. Not everyone is built for tests, but passing a written exam doesn’t give you grit or courage in an active war zone.

As I said not everyone is an academic person which also means they aren't going to be good at passing tests, I knew plenty of people in my school who were intelligent but rubbish at passing exams.

Furthermore, this thread is literally about Harry, so why on earth would I be talking about anyone else? No one said he was the only person in history to ever serve in the military. Bringing up a massive list of other royals just to say 'but look how much faster they got promoted' is a total derailment. It’s just a desperate attempt to shift the goalposts because you can't handle a simple discussion about his service without turning it into a weird, competitive ranking exercise

It wasn't an "academic" exam - it was a series of intelligence tests.

But none of the others go on about the military being the main/only thing in their life or rattle on about their service/kill count a decade later.

Harry was in a unique position where he could have chosen to do anything. But he chosen to be a celebrity/victim which is a huge waste of the privileges he was granted in life.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · Yesterday 20:14

Well, that was a fascinating derail into the army education and promotion process. I trust we're all suitably admonished for our ignorance.

I think this article misses the point. Kate does not need to ‘compete’ with Meghan, she will be Queen not matter how popular (not very) the HaMs become:

W & C stay classy whereas the HaMs ……… do not.

TheAutumnCrow · Yesterday 20:17

BigWillyLittleTodger · Yesterday 19:10

Exactly. We have hundreds of current democratically elected MPs and thousands of democratically elected senior city and county councillors, and candidates and former politicians, who have no security protection whatsoever, but whose private details are in the public domain and who are continually being confronted by hostile members of the public, as are their staff and family members.

Tigger1895 · Yesterday 20:17

And there in lies the problem. I’m convinced some people have the Meghan version of tds.

Oh you're back, is the other thread - sorry, "previous" thread too boring?.

notimagain · Yesterday 20:21

Chaostheory12 · Yesterday 20:05

I wonder if Harry's lack of promotion had a lot to do with the fact he was a royal with security issues. Someone commanding other men at a high level in a field of war can't have a security detail trailing around, and I imagine it causes a lot of resentment among other offficers. 'He's only there because of who his dad is '. I don't know how it worked with Andrew but he was deeply unpopular and I don't believe he was ever putting his life on the line really.

Sorry to.switch Princes but I'm going to have to very much and very strongly disagree with your comment about Andrew and " I don't believe he was ever putting his life on the line really."

Everybody down south on the task force in 82 was putting their lives on the line.

He was operating off (and when not flying, eating and sleeping on) HMS Invincible which was the number one target for Argentine aviation..Etendard /Excocet ring bells?.There was no hiding place on a ship, no safe bunker.

Even the basic act of just flying off ships in South Atlantic weather was risky...chuck in some beefy seabirds and there was the potential for an accident even doing something benign like cross decking troops between two ships.

Andrew may well be a nasty bit of work and was known to be an arse but like many his life was on the line.

A previous thread asked what topic we’d like banned from this site. This would be my choice. It tiresome and it shows people have very boring lives.

Do you mean you'd like to see discussion of a buffoonish pair intent on grabbing public attention at any cost shut down or discussion of royal matters generally and if that's the case, why?

I think it was fairly widely accepted that he wouldn’t have passed the exams to move up to major. The “not wanting a desk job” was an excuse. Yes there is a lot of planning and strategic works a Major, but you are still involved with your platoon. It also depends heavily on which branch you end up in. Harry struggled academically. There are two main routes in to Sandhurst. One is via a degree and the other is being an NCO who is offered to commission. But everyone will have to pass exams further up the ranks. Harry did not have either of these attributes so was always going to find it difficult
So again, no snobbery. Just the way it is. Glad you had fun googling btw 😆

@LifeIsTooShort247

Back to H..

He left active service precisely because he wanted to remain an active pilot, not be desk bound.

It's never looked that way to me.

He finished the flying phase of his career, returned to his unit, so back to the relative drudge and ceremonial role, and as far as anyone can tell hasn't flown an aircraft since.

OK he may not have been able to fly a HMG funded Apache around but he has or had the time and money to remain active as a pilot in some role if he really wanted to.

One thing I will take from that article is that Meghan posted the scooting kids video straight after C&C were spotted on the tube...
The reaction from my perspective was a mix of bewilderment about why someone would film & the photos were published as they usually wouldn't dare.. but also people were so happy to see C&C enjoying their girls day calmly & no fuss..
Of course Meghan had to try & get the limelight quickly with her video.
Also I don't think Catherine needs to "up" any game, she's doing just great.

I'm not sure if that was posted by a PH devotee or someone at Sandhurst annoyed at our ignorance and trying to educate us. Either way it was quite funny to have a poster complaining about derails and then doing exactly that.
