I agree, it's really not a younger generation thing. Diana's relevance has diminished.

Britain is being forceably divorced from its history. Large numbers of immigrants have no historic links within the uk so our history doesn’t matter to them or is objectionable to them or because it excludes them. Hence all the ‘period dramas’ with inaccurate representations of the population. Wiping out our history is called ‘decolonisation’. The RF are part of that. So it is no accident the RF is becoming more irrelevant.

Plus the RF themselves are not helping this by their decisions not to attend so many events. Their relevance depended to no little extent on their presence in people’s lives.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

I'd be interested to know how well Charles Spencer's book is actually selling. Are there any reliable figures for that? It might indicate the kind of audience size for the potential "Diana death tourism" documentary.

20% of the uk population are first generation immigrants. Is it any wonder that an historical institution like the RF should lose its relevance when such a large part of the population do not share that history?

I don't know what you mean by "lose it's relevance" because of migration? Are you saying that migrants do not appreciate the culture and history of the UK?

The late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip was an immigrant. He was Greek.

Indeed, I remember it was in the news a while back that The King himself would fail the "Britishness" test that either Reform or Restore were talking about. Because he is the son of an immigrant.

On that basis, I would say they are relevant in a multi-cultural society.

Gonners · 28/09/2026 08:56

Someone's channelling Uncle Matthew there ... 'Frogs,' he would say, 'are slightly better than Huns or Wops, but abroad is unutterably bloody and foreigners are fiends.'

I think talk of immigration should not be introduced to this thread , it’s just not relevant and too political, I would please request that you leave this topic for other threads and boards .
thanks.

He was Danish-Russian (and probably German). The Greek came about because he was born in Corfu and IIRC his grandfather (a younger son of the King of Denmark) was chosen to become King of Greece

I find this hard to believe tbh. Especially after Meg was quite horrible about Lauren S

SisterTeatime · 28/09/2026 09:15

Just on the Diana documentary, if Meghan is involved she will, inevitably, Markle it, by inserting herself into it.

If they could leave professionals to get on with their jobs, take advice and direction, their projects to date would not have been so
crap. She has a fatal combination of micromanagement and laziness that’s given us the forgettable With Love, Meghan and the risible Archetypes, either of which might have been passable if she could listen to anyone.

If you were a tv person and you had
a ‘star’ who thought putting pretzels from one bag into another was original, interesting hosting advice, or you were a podcast person and you had a host who thought it was okay to get someone else to do the actual interviews, you’d - obviously - try to persuade them otherwise (after you’d picked your flabbergasted self up
off the floor). The fact that these half-assed efforts made it to air shows that Meghan can’t cope with suggestions, and that others give up and let her crack on. I can absolutely see her comparing herself to Diana in a documentary. It will be real watch through the fingers stuff.

He was still a migrant, and only became naturalised later.

If I had emigrated to Cuba, Japan or America, I would not have the same identity with the history of the country as I do with the UK because I do not have any shared history with them. I might appreciate that the bombs dropped on Hiroshima caused devastation but that is very different to having had relatives live through it (The European Royals do of course have a shared history across Europe). I am not sure why that should be considered controversial? The word ‘multicultural’ itself acknowledges separate cultures that are not shared, including cultures for whom the RF holds little relevance.

Leaving Amazon aside It's the portrail of Invictus as belonging to H that I find really objectionable, and as an extension of that gripe, the idea that as I think he had expressed at times that he gets to hand them on the Archie..

Ok. I am mindful of @jeffgoldblum's advice here.
This is a very complicated and controversial topic, and would be best served on another thread.

I've been keeping an eye on the reviews on Amazon ~ there are currently 336 reviews.

The star rating has been very interesting as it started extremely low but it's now up to 4.3

As one would expect, the reviews are very diverse in their opinions of this book!

I don't know anyone who has bought it. None of my colleagues, family or friends are remotely interested in it. I think a PP on an earlier thread summed it up nicely when she said all the 'highlights' have been published by the press so the rest of the book is likely to be extremely boring!

I agree with @jeffgoldblum and @Williaminagingerwig that immigration is not a suitable topic for this thread.

Apologies for the detail, but my god I wish I'd been born (to a rich family) in Corfu. I would never leave!

I tend to think this is more wishful thinking on HAM’s side . A bit like Dior - put a story out there and hope it happens .
Will be interesting to see if Jeff responds especially as M - allegedly- looked down on Lauren .

Worth remembering that yet again it's all "reportedly", "it's understood that" and "sources", and that the Mail's another who - for all their pretence to have the inside track - were caught on the hop by H&M's return

Apparently though the Canadian CTV people asked about this and Harry merely replied there were "lots of reasons", so I guess we're none the wiser: https://news.sky.com/story/prince-harry-says-its-great-to-be-back-in-the-uk-and-he-returned-for-lots-of-reasons-13592046

Yes let’s leave this topic please , I definitely don’t think we need to bring Hiroshima onto the thread either do we .
