Was King Charles wrong to take a rose from Charles Spencer's bouquet?

Charles Spencer says as Diana's coffin was lowered into the ground, several people there dropped flowers on the coffin. King Charles took a rose from Charles Spencers bouquet and dropped it on Diana's coffin.

This struck me as it shows a very casual disregard for other people's feelings. This was Charles Spencers flowers, but without a thought, king Charles took mine of the flowers. And remember relationships were extremely strained between the two men.

Sometimes I think the smallest incidents like this can reveal someone's true character. It's like someone being rude to a waiter. The king just acts like no one else matters except what he wants.

He controls the purse strings and the estate . That gives you the power.

A man whose wife had just died took a flower from a bouquet and dropped it on her coffin. He prob didn’t even know whose bouquet it was.

Agreed, and all the flowers were for Diana, it's not as though he took one home to give to Camilla.

OneLilacHedgehog · 20/09/2026 16:51

You don't take flowers from a bouquet that is not yours. It's just disrespectful. I can't some people are not recognising this.

Did it actually happen?
Even if it did, it was nearly 30 years ago.

To use an irritating MN phrase, I just can't get worked up about it.

All I can say is, if someone asked me if they could have a flower to throw I'd just say '"Of course- help yourself" and then think nothing more about it.

Blimey, the manufactured drama, self-righteousness and faux indignation on here is just crazy.

Oh God - imagine being the sort of person who a) remembers that and b) brings it up 3 decades later! I mean, there's bearing a grudge and then there's this.

He's a truly obnoxious man.

I know. You'd think he'd have other stuff to be concerned with over the last 29 years.
Like his 7 children.

It's obvious that Charles s who had to endure all those other slights and insults from.charles w at that time would be enraged that he then had the cheek to pinch one of his flowers for his sister !

🤣 Charles Spencer has missed an opportunity for his book here...

Only if he was looking to find fault - and make a detailed note of it for later merching.

I can't think of anyone I know who's that small-minded.

Nobody is s saying it's the crime of the century. But it does demonstrate an underlying disrespect and lack of consideration for others.

In your opinion...others (myself included) disagree.

Imagine if KC hadn't placed a flower onto the coffin at all...." All of those mourning Diana threw a flower onto the coffin as a sign of respect, except KC who stood there and didn't do anything...he disrespcted me and my sister in that moment.."
I suspect whatever KC had done in that moment would have been wrong

I had a little google of Mrs Shand Kydd and her marriage to the current Earl Spencer's dad.

Treatment of First Wife (Frances Roche)

  • Pressure for an Heir: Johnny was intensely focused on producing a male successor to inherit the earldom and the Althorp estate. When early children were daughters and a son died shortly after birth, he subjected Frances to humiliating gynaecological tests to find the "cause" of not producing the all-important heir. 1, 2]
  • Emotional and Physical Abuse: Reports and accounts—including childhood memories recalled by Princess Diana—noted that the marriage involved severe shouting matches and physical abuse, with Diana once witnessing her father slap her mother across the face. 1, 2]
  • The Bitter Divorce: After Frances left the marriage in 1967 for Peter Shand Kydd, Johnny fought a vicious custody battle in 1968. Backed surprisingly by Frances's own mother (Lady Fermoy), Johnny won full custody of the children—a rare outcome in British courts at the time. 1, 2, 3]
  • Alienation: During the acrimonious proceedings, he made no effort to shield the children from the bitterness, leaving them largely to the care of nannies afterward. 1]

I wonder if CS is almost hard-wired to expect the worst of an ex-husband.

So, worth starting a thread to criticise KC for?

upinaballoon · 20/09/2026 17:15

No-one will believe me about this because it wasn't on The Crown and so couldn't possibly be true but I would put money on the fact that I came home from work at the time of the engagement and that Johnnie Spencer, on the tea-time news, described Diana as 'a perfect physical specimen'. The last time I looked on Google the words were reported as having been something which he said when she was a baby, but I don't think they were only for when she was a baby.

I believe this is at least the third thread this particular poster has created in the last few days. I've also seen them posting on various other threads all with views against the royal family hence my earlier comment about wondering if they were PR for the new book and the Spencers. It's been a busy weekend for them for sure.

You do realise you're doing your cause more harm than good with all this shite, don't you?

Spencer has had a sudden desire to tell all these stories. Lucky he’s remembered them all really, otherwise people might not be so interested in his book.

He is a historian so has the skills

And a journo who took detailed notes and kept them for 30 years.

As Mae West advised “Keep a diary and one day it’ll keep you”.

KCitsweyourHammiewevecomehomenow · 20/09/2026 17:43

He seems such a boor, hardly someone to take opinions on good conduct from,

he was quite a high pitched voice for a man too, gives me the ick and his eyes have that watery drinker look about them as does his nose which has developed a drinker bulbous tip
