Was King Charles wrong to take a rose from Charles Spencer's bouquet?

Charles Spencer says as Diana's coffin was lowered into the ground, several people there dropped flowers on the coffin. King Charles took a rose from Charles Spencers bouquet and dropped it on Diana's coffin.

This struck me as it shows a very casual disregard for other people's feelings. This was Charles Spencers flowers, but without a thought, king Charles took mine of the flowers. And remember relationships were extremely strained between the two men.

Sometimes I think the smallest incidents like this can reveal someone's true character. It's like someone being rude to a waiter. The king just acts like no one else matters except what he wants.

Diana mentioned one incident. If it was a regular occurrence she would have said.

Plenty of mums on here gave mentioned getting upset once and their children trying to comfort them or make it better. Most mums have cried 8n front of their children or within their hearing once in their life.

Oh please, you cannot seriously believe there is strong evidence that it was just the once!

Orr did Diana say « oh yes, I would frequently get upset and William, bless him, even tried to comfort me - but just the once, mind you! No point over-doing it «

LOLs big time

In her TV interview. Paul Burrell is not a reliable narrator.

If you mean the Bashir interview, no, she didn’t mention anything about William passing a note under the bathroom door, not even once.

CoffeeCantata · 25/09/2026 09:29

We simply CANNOT have any kind behaviour ascribed to William. Or definitely not more than once.

Remember the script, please, pps!

Looks like the OP has done a runner again when challenged. Just like the ridiculous photo op thread.

I do wish this poster would stop stating their opinions as facts. It's very irritating. Burrell may be reliable, he may not, but no-one who wasn't there knows one way or another.

BemusedAmerican · 25/09/2026 13:09

Dropping the rose into the grave was a sign of love and respect. I've had to participate on and/or organize funerals for several family members. My reaction would be "what an emotion - filled gesture", not "OMG, he defaced a flower arrangement", which is going to be dead and rotten in another day.

CS is obsessed with money. He was probably muttering " I paid x pounds for that arrangement and he takes a rose for free". Just so petty.

Of course it was. To interpret it in any other way shows you as a small-minded nit-picking nightmare of a drama queen.

I ‘m looking at you, Spencer, and you OP!

They are basing their argument on the “fact” that Diana mentioned William pushing a note under the bathroom door in her Panorama interview. Apparently she would have said if he’d done it more than once, so it’s now also a “fact” that it was a one-off.

Trouble is, Diana never mentioned anything about William pushing notes under the bathroom door in that interview. It’s a pretty unreliable bit of narration for a poster who casts aspersions on the reliability of others. Apparently they like to own their mistakes though, so will be along in a minute to own this one, I’m sure.

Poor William, I think he had a tough time. Now we have those ultra royalist promoters of Diana who keep trying to trash him. Bizarre.

I know! It would be comical if it wasn't so awful.
I've just read a poster on another thread claiming that William is permanently in a bad temper!
So ridiculous.
Plus that thread with the photo.
Desperate.

This poster posts with staggering but misplaced confidence and very assertive ply puts pps down if they challenge anything.

Ends up making a right tit of themselves given they are so often wrong. It makes sense that they should be defending Harry and Meghan I suppose, both have a distant relationship with the truth, proven liars in fact. And Charles Spencer too, with his many whoopsies in the book.

Noticeably - although there are posters I skim past because of a low boredom threshold for long posts saying the same thing over and over and pomposity - they don't seem to trash Harry.

I have no idea why that should be, have you?

I can only think they are fans of hypocrisy, bullying, racism, aggression, lying, exploiting vulnerable people, stupidity, entitlement, drug abuse, GCSE-style geopolitical pronouncements, poor public speaking, breaching the privacy of others, failure and jam. And are staunch royalists.

In a nutshell!

Clearly, the gesture (re the flower) annoyed CS, though I personally thiunk it a nice gesture.
I don't think I would mind something like that, if I were the chief mourner.

I certainly wouldn't have held onto it as a perceived grudge, 29 years later.

I thought I could hold onto grudges. At least mine are over substantive issues. Cs makes me look like a rank amateur.

Maybe if your sister had died young and people like her ex husband kept telling lies about her, you too would hold a grudge?

Maybe I'd think, perhaps it's best not to lie even more, especially when it can be proven about your book.

What lies has KC told about Diana? I'm not sure I have ever read anything where he has referred to her negatively?

Its CS who has dragged everything up again. He could have wrote a book about how amazing his sister was and had the focus on her and her charity work but instead he has focused on his anger at KC and thats all anyone is talking about.
Anything else is an afterthought

I suspect he wanted the book to be scandalous as the real reason for writing it isn't to tell his sisters story, but he saw pound signs and knows that a juicy bit of negativity towards the royal family, true or not, is what sells

Without checking it out first.
Lazy as well as greedy and exploitative.

You are very confident in your assertions about what happened, aren't you?

If I still held a grudge after 30years, I'd consider I was the problem and get some help for it. I've got various people against who I could hold grudges because of their treatment of me (hello ex-husband, looking at you) but I don't; because I've consciously decided not to, because it's a waste of my life and also because hanging onto resentment and expecting the other person to care after 30 years is not conducive to leading a happy life.

But then I don't have a book to sell.
