This was at an event this week. But the photo just made me gasp. It looks like the elderly woman is being used as a prop, rather than being treated in a dignified way.

Not a great idea to become queen if you are a very private person.

QE2 was a private person. Seemed to work out ok for her.

You see I think Catherine is just bland.

What, in your opinion, should she be doing in order to be not bland?

Evidently become a crazed narcissist. And obsessed with fruit spread.

Yes I find it quite funny that if someone shows even mild support for the RF (that probably includes me, I think on balance it's a good thing for the country but don't pay a huge amount of attention to their daily activities) they're a rabid royalist yet there are Republicans and H and M fans (quite often the same thing on here) who seem to be obsessed with it all across the internet.

I find that the angry people on here do tend to be the republicans - with some honourable exceptions, of course. They sometimes accuse the monarchists of being rabid, or frothing, but honestly I’ve always found the opposite to be true.

It often makes me titter as I sit, good- humouredly typing, to be told I’m frothing or spitting vitriol by a pp who is clearly doing just that.

But of course republicans would be angrier than the pro-monarchy brigade. The monarchists are living under a system which, despite its expense, ridiculously reactionary ‘logic’ and anti-egalitarianness, they say they’re broadly happy under. They like being ‘subjects’. They like the bread and circuses. They like waving little flags on the routes of royal weddings, and outfit-spotting and following the soap opera of it all. Republicans are naturally angry because they think that having a sacred bloodline is anachronistic nonsense in the 21st century.

Why are there so many frothing / foaming accusations levelled at people who criticise H+M then? If the republicans are the angry ones?

I also find it odd that criticism of H+M, for yet another example of their hypocrisy say, necessarily means the critic is a monarchist, when H+M are the most overtly, performatively royal of any of them.

I have not forgotten a self confessed republican uttering the rather bemusing phrase “ I can’t wait for good king Harry to rule!” 🤔

Has the OP clarified where they found the pic yet?

Best of all, they love Harry and Meghan. They epitomise the worst aspects of a monarchy; privileged, wealthy, greedy, dishonest shysters.
Anyone who is even slightly republican, and many who support a monarchy, are horrified at the Sussexes 18thC approach to their royal titles. Very Louis XVI!

They want King Harry because they want an Absolute Monarchy, rather than the Constitutional one we have, do you think? Or are they just loons?

…….honestly? ….I believe they are fans of the Sussex’s who think that by pretending that they are republicans it adds a certain gravitas’s or legitimacy to their arguments and makes it easier to label those who criticise as “royalists “ or “monarchists “………the clue is it always starts with….as a republican I’m not a fan of any of the royals but I find the constant bullying of ham is disturbing…….yet none of them find the constant bullying of Catherine an issue.

Yes, I think you're right. They can't possibly be republican! It's probably just a fan thing. Still inexplicable either way! 😉

Political arguments aside (that’s not for this thread…hopefully) you’re right about the bread and circuses. I’m a mild, non-flag-waving constitutional monarchist and I love all the pretty horses etc. I think my taxes (is it about a fiver?) are well-spent just on Trooping the Colour. It’s the most fantastic musical, horse -person-ship and choreographed marching display you’ll ever see anywhere. Stunning.

i know we could still do this stuff with a president, as the French do, but for me the continuity of heredity monarchy adds something special. If you don’t like it, I can’t explain it, but it wouldn’t be the same if it involved a politician, and a different one every few years.

(There are less flippant reasons why I’m a monarchist, but that’s a bit off-topic for this thread.)

But the people who line the streets with flags etc are a tiny minority of people.

Do I care if I'm a subject, no couldn't give toss but in a world where diplomacy is more and more important I am glad that we have someone who for e.g. is willing to go over to the US and smarm with Trump and other unsavoury characters. Not a job I'd want.

If we had an elected head of state, I reckon Nigel Farage would currently win so I'll stick with the monarchy thanks.

It’s intellectually totally inconsistent, isn’t it? But as we know, they don’t like KC or W&C and that gives them common cause with HAM. They love the disruption the HAMs go in for.

I just wish they’d admit to this shadenfreude.

Totally agree.

Be careful what you wish for. The world is much more unstable and volatile than it was even a decade ago. The sort of president which might be elected now could well be of the Trump/Farage type.

Tittering. That word is simply not used enough these days! 😜

Oh, and yes I agree @CoffeeCantata that the worst ranters and frothers are the anti-Royalists. They can't half whinge. 😆

No, don't be fooled. William is obviously holding onto her to force her to have her picture taken with them and said that if she moves then he'd give her a Chinese burn.

my milkman's neighbours cat told me this, so it is irrefutably true.

To deliberately search out a very unflattering picture and bypassing all the normal ones, not having the grace to use her name or the relevant information….it seems you op are the one using her as a prop !! How very dehumanising of you .
