This was at an event this week. But the photo just made me gasp. It looks like the elderly woman is being used as a prop, rather than being treated in a dignified way.

How did you know?

Lucky guess 😁.

I did not mention Jamaica at all, I simply said it was part of that tour, which it was.
If they had any sense they would look at the optics. Incident after incident that clearly looked colonialist. You can get away with one on a tour, but they just kept coming.

This post demonstrates one of the blind spots that always bemuses me in these discussions - all these posters thinking it’s perfectly okay for them to be deciding what other countries should and shouldn’t do on the basis that the posters know better than the leaders or local communities from foreign states about what is appropriate for that country to do in relation to a visiting dignitary.

As in these posts, a key objection is that the events (being carried in elevated chairs, being driven in a historic landrover) are tone deaf, because, colonialism. The posters never seem to realise that it’s they themselves who are assuming cultural superiority in declaring they know better than these independent nations about what they should want, and how their cultures should be viewed. Who are the ones demonstrating colonialist attitudes here, then?

Yes, absolutely. It's very colonialist to insist that another culture changes to suit your sensibilities.

I expect Jenny is still chatting today about her lovely meeting with W&C, am sure she’d give the OP short thrift for her opening post!

exaltedwombat · 19/09/2026 17:56

Don’t be silly. Someone’s mischievously picked the worst shot from the session, which also produced pictures which that lady will display proudly!

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 16:39

Honestly the other photos look like a different woman. Is it really the same woman?

So they dressed a body double in her coat to get a better photo? Batshit 🙄

Megs, Meghan.. is that you stirring the pot again...??

You see I think Catherine is just bland. And the sad reason is because that is what the palace want.
Catherine has favourable ratings but she is not loved like Diana was.

Oh dear.. reading your posts on this thread, you do sound a bit obsessed. And I still think you are Meghan (or one of her sycophants lololol)

hugbilly · 19/09/2026 19:23

Funniest thing I've seen all day, thanks and best wishes !!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 19/09/2026 20:18

I want a RF that's bland and not full of drama llamas. So long as they're pleasant enough to the people they meet and just get on with the job that's enough for me.

QE 2 was objectively bland in public (although people who knew her said she definitely wasn't in private) yet people respected her. I actually think that KC comes over as a warmer friendlier person than his mother but more people seem to dislike him.🤷‍♂️

Dazedandconfused28 · 19/09/2026 20:46

With the thousands of photos that are taken of them I'm surprised there aren't more slightly odd ones posted! Just an odd angle, nothing more & nothing to read into

CoffeeCantata · 19/09/2026 20:49

The RF are supposed to focus on the role, not the individual. That’s where M got I so wrong. It’s not meant to be a popularity contest.

Lololol. You didn't notice them getting fired on camera by Jamaica and the many protests by local people?

You argue that people are 'assuming cultural superiority in declaring they know better.' Yet, that is precisely what happens on Mumsnet every single day when it comes to Harry and Meghan. Posters routinely decide what is 'appropriate' for them to do, say, or wear, completely convinced that they know better than the people actually living those lives. The irony of calling out 'tone deaf' behavior while ignoring the forum's non-stop dictation of other people's lives is striking.

Of course you don't go tell those posters that do you.

Hi folks

Just a reminder that if you do not like a thread, you're not obliged to post - the hide button exists for this very reason! Please do hide the thread if you don't like the discussion - and please do avoid making personal attacks on other posters.

This is worth quoting I think!

People who live in the UK are entitled to have an opinion about what they say publicly about the UK and about how they behave towards our head of state and other institutions.

They think they are public figures, well then their public words and actions are open to criticism.

Yes ! , it’s excellent, if you are cutting down on the sugars but still robust enough for cereal or coffee! I would recommend it , it’s not too nuts either.
