George is 13 - only 5 years away from adulthood, although one would assume he'll go to university and then onto military service before taking up the duties of a working Royal.

However, it's perfectly possible Charles will live another 5 years. He won't abdicate, though - and there's no earthly reason why George's coming of age in particular would trigger abdication.

He won't live another five years. He'll be dead in about two years.

BrilliantBetty · 17/09/2026 22:42

He is a good king. Has done a lot of work on environmental issues for a long time. Stripped back the royal family. He does his duty.

BrilliantBetty · 17/09/2026 22:44

And his speeches in America earlier this year were fantastic.

Grain80 · 17/09/2026 22:44

Don’t be ridiculous

Noras · 17/09/2026 22:46

I am aghast at the current downright vicious attack on our monarch. Why is this happening now and for what purpose?

As I said on another thread; King Charles was looking pretty forlorn when he went to pick up Di’s body and he even seemed tearful at one point - his emotions looked genuine to me. He seemed tender and caring to her sisters.

Dabralor · 17/09/2026 22:50

Of course he shouldn’t abdicate, what an entirely ridiculous notion!
Absolutely go and read some history OP- this is all very tame drama compared with royal dynasties in the past. The crown has sailed through much stormier waters than some silly book.

DoggerelBank · 17/09/2026 22:55

Michael Palin for president! (Although if we have to have a monarch, I actually think Charles is doing fine.)

And you think you know that how?

You aren't the king's physician therefore you know absolutely zilch about his health, what cancer he has and how his treatment is going. Plenty of people die with cancer, not of it.

You have no basis on which to make such a ridiculous statement. There were plenty of people saying they knew he'd be dead in a year when he was diagnosed and pretended they'd heard that from a friend who knew his doctor and other such crap.

Of course, like you, they knew fuck all.

We vote for one - completely separately from other elections, the 'President' would be apolitical as the Royals are, other than serving a diplomatic function.

The President has a 5 year tenure after which the position is up for election again. That way we don't get stuck with anyone we get fed up with.

The only qualities they'd need would be diplomatic skills, languages possibly - we could have a choice of anyone who was prepared to do it - a retired diplomat, maybe; a retired politician, or possibly someone from the theatrical world. It would be up to us, the public.

Sounds drab.

We wouldn't have been told about his cancer if it was serious. We've been told so we can marvel at him for 'getting on with his duty'. They have v good PR.

Just what we need, more political turbulence and uncertainty.

DearCritic · 18/09/2026 06:46

Many wanted him to when the queen died, he didn’t. I don’t think he will now.
I don’t know why Harry and Megan being back in the UK would mean he would abdicate? Surely with those drama llamas in the UK the royal family wants more stability. In fairness he’s actually done a better job than expected.
He’s 77, he’s at an age where it wouldn’t be unexpected if he died. I very much doubt he’ll live as long as the queen did. I think he’ll keep going until the end.

Pedant61 · 18/09/2026 06:50

No, of course not. He's doing an excellent job.

augustusglupe · 18/09/2026 07:46

No.
Why would he abdicate because of the actions of other people? Charles Spencer isn’t worth the time of day and if he constantly rose to H&M’s antics then he’d certainly be in an early grave. Imagine how many obstacles Queen Elizabeth faced in 70 years and she kept calm and carried on.
As for his health, it’s probably his job that’s keeping him going. He’s got Camilla & family who love him. Sod the rest.

Absolutely. I wouldn't let a bitter and jealous man like Spencer have any control over who should be Head of State.

WarriorN · 18/09/2026 07:54

There’s a rumour he’s not got that long left. As in, over the next year. It’s probably why Harry returned.

He returned to give his gravely ill father more stress? How unpleasant.

CurlewKate · 18/09/2026 07:58

One excellently written well delivered speech to tease Trump seems a pretty minimal achievement for 70 something years of life……

EasternStandard · 18/09/2026 08:01

Glad it’s majority a no. The book is a nonsense. Talk about monetising your sister. Maybe he’s out of cash.

you can interpret it like that if you wish to but I really don’t.

Beveren · 18/09/2026 08:12

Why on earth should he abdicate just because his former brother in law wants to make money out of his deceased ex wife?

ElefantAndCastle · 18/09/2026 08:13

No.
