Why on earth would he?

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 21:15

Is that you William?

Seriously no. We can't afford another coronation. He can only abdicate if William agrees to take the vows on teams from his house, so zero cost.

Notsosweetcaroline · 17/09/2026 21:19

Why on earth should he abdicate just as his son and family live in the uk again. And his health is fine, he’s in treatment, Christ the queen worked till the day before her death. What an odd question.

Warmhandscoldheart · 17/09/2026 21:20

No, he shouldn't, he has no reason to. He's been a good king and an excellent diplomat.

A book written from the point of view of a bitter ex brother in law - it will be on the reduced shelves of book stores by Christmas.
Harry and Meghan who have caused chaos since moving back to this country without one consideration for the King or his health.

God save the King from manipulative back stabbers.

exactly, the book is intended to make money, and to do that it needs something salacious, so he’s tried to do what Harry did , make up shit so people buy it for the gossip.

I can see an advantage in an older monarch stepping away to allow an heir to start the top job while still relatively young, as the Danish monarchy did.

It would also allow the new monarch to start their reign not in a fog of grief that their parent has just died.

In Charles' case he hasn't had the job very long, and it would be better for William to get the stuff he really wants to accomplish with the Duchy of Cornwall, and get his kids at least through secondary school before the big job.

So ten years until Louis is 18 - Charles will be 87. That would be the point to start discussing this I think.

Start discussing it? It’s not up to us, it’s up to Charles, and William will work till he can’t anymore,so he will want to start as late as possible. Charles is entitled to this job, it’s his choice how long he does it for.

Ted27 · 17/09/2026 21:24

@catspyjamas1

If you know any history, you would understand why the late queen would never abdicate or indeed Charles

TishToshByGosh · 17/09/2026 21:30

Only in the sense that we should bring an end to the monarchy.

Unless that happens, he should stay put. He's a better option than William the Indolent.

In any case, even if the entire population of the UK wanted Charles to abdicate, he wouldn't. Abdication really is a last resort - he has weathered his admitted adultery, 'the other woman' has become Queen - he ain't going to chuck his crown in because Earl Spencer has published his negative opinions and some third-hand gossip.

It would take Andrew-levels of scandal to force Charles to abdicate, not "Oooh, you'll never guess what, Diana's mate told me Charles said he didn't love her in 1981!"

Who won't live? I don't understand this post.

Someone said that Charles should abdicate when George reaches adulthood. I said that he won't live that long, so he won't need to abdicate.

George is 13 - only 5 years away from adulthood, although one would assume he'll go to university and then onto military service before taking up the duties of a working Royal.

However, it's perfectly possible Charles will live another 5 years. He won't abdicate, though - and there's no earthly reason why George's coming of age in particular would trigger abdication.

Recollections vary

Charles Spencer must be finding things tight in the run up to Christmas. Such a paragon of virtue himself.

I loved the interview on radio 4 earlier where they said he seems happy with his 4th wife.

Scenicgirl · 17/09/2026 21:41

Absolutely not, but I'm sure if he wanted to, he would, so I can not see any point in joe public speculating about his future!

Charles wont abdicate. Hes been waiting to become King his whole life. However hes in his late 70s, had cancer so I doubt he will live as long as his mother. I predict that Harry will be toast when William claims the crown 😉

I dont think he, or anyone else, really want to be King/Queen. They are groomed into and think right they have no choice.

Charles is having the best health care and might well live long as he will have the genes for it.

If he abdicated he could have a simpler relationship with Harry.

Harry and Meghan don’t want a relationship with Charles his father, they want a relationship with Charles the King hence why there’s no reconciliation or forgiveness on the horizon for HER father.

I mean what has Thomas Markle actually done? Talked and colluded with the press? Leaked info? Well if we’re to believe Harry himself and Spare, then Charles and Camilla have done the exact same thing themselves several times over and actually in a worse way so why would those two want a relationship with Charles but not Thomas Markle I wonder? In fact, by all accounts Thomas was the more loving father out of the two so what could the difference be…?

They know once William takes the throne, they’ll be out in the cold permanently.

Well we have a stake in it being that it's our head of state representing us at home and abroad.

I'm all for age limits for politicians too.

I meant start discussing it at a more reasonable point in the future rather than now where Charles is clearly mentally and physically up to the job despite the cancer.

dreamingofgoodhair · 17/09/2026 21:48

I think they should all resign or whatever it is they need to do. We don’t need a royal family in this day and age.

And your suggested President is whom, exactly?
There you have it.

milveycrohn · 17/09/2026 21:54

No,
But this does not mean he shouldn't in the future.
If his health became much worse. and he was unable to fulfil his obligations, then maybe.
But otherwise,NO.
If we must have a monarchy, and at the moment we do, then there is no reason for him to abdicate.

We vote for one - completely separately from other elections, the 'President' would be apolitical as the Royals are, other than serving a diplomatic function.

The President has a 5 year tenure after which the position is up for election again. That way we don't get stuck with anyone we get fed up with.

The only qualities they'd need would be diplomatic skills, languages possibly - we could have a choice of anyone who was prepared to do it - a retired diplomat, maybe; a retired politician, or possibly someone from the theatrical world. It would be up to us, the public.

noonames · 17/09/2026 22:02

I’m still waiting to have the all important context explained, and the relevance of H+M to a potential abdication. And the Diana book for that matter.

noonames · 17/09/2026 22:04

The consensus is a pretty clear no though, so at least that’s sorted

Candleabra · 17/09/2026 22:05

No he shouldn’t.
He looks well for a man of his age.
I don’t believe the accusations in CS book.
Harry and Meghan are irrelevant (in every way).

🙄 Reported

What specifically about this post breaks Mumsnet’s terms and conditions that it warrants being reported?

Noras · 17/09/2026 22:26

No No No

Not interested in all the scandal created by the latest book.

Frankly I how they someone writes about the author and his endless marriages. See how he likes that. It’s too much.

I don’t have one , but they’d be elected and a few years. Not in the position because they happen to be born into a particular family.
